The terrifying roar, the chilling chewing sound, and waves of foul winds carried a nauseating bloody stench. Too much blood and torn flesh scattered all over the place, turning the once dry ground into a sticky, disgusting mess. Every step sank deep into the blood and flesh, not onto solid ground. The red mire composed of flesh and blood was a full three inches thick, and this thickness was steadily increasing.
Babu and six others stood back to back, their tree spears constantly in motion, keeping the advancing beasts at bay. Yet the stamina of the seven was ultimately limited, while the attacking beasts were relentless and endless. Despite their seamless cooperation, the seven found it difficult to withstand the continuous onslaught of beasts. Moreover, the seven were no longer the pristine individuals who once descended from the city walls.
After repelling the red beasts' fiery attack, the seven failed to dodge the whirlwind released by the horned wolf. Caught off guard, the seven were almost completely trapped within the vortex, shredded into mince. Thankfully, Jijik reacted quickly, and fortunately, the tree spear in his hands had a strange ability to counteract the superpowers. Just as the seven stepped into the whirlwind, Jijik immediately swung his tree spear, opening a large hole within the whirlwind to escape, then continued to swing the spear to rescue the remaining six.
The whirlwinds released by the horned wolf were incredibly powerful, and Jijik, being just an ordinary person, relied on the tree spear's peculiar power to break through the superpower. Although it could neutralize the superpower, the immense shredding force emanating from the whirlwind still numbed Jijik's right hand to the point of trembling. By the time he saved all six, his right hand was covered in blood marks, with several deep gashes revealing bone on his arm, from which bright red blood continuously gushed. His right hand was now practically unusable.
Escaping the whirlwind's enclosure did not mean the seven could retreat safely to the city wall's edge. While the seven were trapped by the whirlwind, a large number of beasts had already split off to encircle them. The horned wolf and red beast were among them, not giving the seven any time to react before opening their mouths to unleash blue and red beams of light simultaneously.
The seemingly inconspicuous beams of light transformed into wind and fire energies entwined together, attacking Babu and the others. The assault was massive in power and extremely swift. Babu and the rest had no time to dodge, nor any means to do so. With an angry growl, the seven resembled cornered beasts, their black eyes brimming with fierce light—a wild gaze terrifying enough to intimidate all ferocious animals. With this roar, the seven moved in unison, simultaneously thrusting their tree spears forward, emitting sharp, unparalleled auroras. At that moment, the seven appeared as a single entity, a maddened beast, facing the wind and fire energy attack with fangs glowing with black light.
Bang, bang, bang, the black light and blue-red beams of light clashed together, like fabric meeting sharp scissors. Entwined wind and fire energies were severed in half by the cutting black light, subsequently bursting apart. The blue-red beams, inherently filled with immense energy, exploded upon being cut open, unleashing contained wind and fire energy instantaneously. Countless small fragments of flames and wind force shot out in all directions, inevitably enveloping Babu and the others within these scattered energies.
The tremendous explosive force instantly shattered the black light, with the recoil rushing into Babu and the others through the tree spears. Their faces turned pale, spewing a mouthful of blood as they staggered backward. The covering fragments of flames then rained down like a storm. The seven were too exhausted to resist the flames, only able to protect their vital parts, dodging continuously. But the flames' coverage was expansive, so despite their evasive maneuvers, many burns and bits of wind force still clung to them.
With burns and cuts, the seven, already covered in scars, now appeared even more horrific with the added injuries. By then, the seven were completely disoriented, seeing only a blur of red ahead, with distant areas turning fuzzy. Out of instinct, they clung tightly together, waving their tree spears based on muscle reflex to repel the advancing beasts.
The beasts roared angrily, carrying a strong bloody stench. Babu's hands gripping the spears had started to numb, and their bodies began to tremble uncontrollably. Their stamina was nearly depleted, but they could only instinctively swing their spears to fend off the beasts, nothing else.
The sky carried the sound of fluttering wings, clear bird cries suddenly piercing the air, as a massive flock of birds flew in from afar, directly targeting the Superpower Users and troop-like figures standing on the city wall. From the start of the Beast Tide, these individuals stood atop the wall, with occasional attacks by the Superpower Users to repel approaching beasts. After all, with Babu and the others attracting most of the beasts outside, they faced fewer beasts.
Yet now, Babu and the others were nearly overwhelmed, with beasts beginning to gather outside the city, eyeing the wall's defenders fiercely. Among them were beasts capable of superpowers, launching attacks of fire, whirlwinds, or ice spikes. Those on the wall counterattacked continuously, while during the fierce battle atop and below the wall, a large flock of birds broke through the wall's defensive net.
Raging cries erupted from the wall; they had never seen a Beast Tide joined by flocks of birds. The birds' appearance greatly unsettled the defenders. Superpower Users hastily wielded their energy to attack the descending bird flocks. But the number of birds was overwhelming, and the Superpower Users, caught unprepared, were thoroughly suppressed by the flock, retreating step by step. Those in standard attire fared even worse, unable to fend them off, instantly knocked to the ground by the birds. Some larger birds extended iron talons, grabbing people high into the sky before letting them fall. Splat! The victims became bloody pulps on impact, brains and blood splattering everywhere. Even more tragic, some were torn apart mid-air by two or three birds and quickly discarded to the ground.
With the attackers on the wall neutralized, beasts on the ground began their assault. Senseless beasts directly charged at the city gate's raised iron bars, as if knowing it led inside the city. A beast roar, like an order, spread among the herd, causing the previously disorganized beast groups to unite, assaulting the iron bars. Beasts with superpowers began launching their energy attacks on the bars.
The iron bars, made from an exceedingly tough alloy and capable of withstanding energy attacks, soon emitted a final wail under the relentless beast assault, collapsing into a heap of scrap metal.
With the bars breached, those inside scrambled to draw weapons, continually attacking the invading beasts. Yet the sheer number of beasts was too overwhelming, preventing them from countering the beast tide. They resisted while retreating to narrower spots.
"Blow up the gate. Quickly blow up the gate," someone roared desperately, giving the order. To prevent the beasts from flooding inside, blowing up the gate was the only option. But with defenders having been pushed far from the gate, who had the time to go blow up the passageway? The order itself got lost, drowned out by the beasts' roars.
These well-equipped individuals lacked Babu's courage and boldness, already retreating backward as soon as the beast horde entered, showing no inclination to resist. The Superpower Users directly withdrew to safe spots. But with birds above and beasts below, nowhere was truly safe. Those retreating to high places faced immediate attacks from bird flocks.
"Bastards, don't retreat. Keep attacking," bellowed the team leader angrily, firing his weapon repeatedly to blast several approaching beasts into pieces. But soon enough, he was jostled to the edge by his companions, facing more numerous and ferocious beasts. It only took a moment of distraction before a beast lunged, pinning him down, turning him into a mess of shredded meat with a scream.
Blood and water flowed toward the drains. Hiding in the sewers, people were nearly nauseated by the intense, foul bloody stench. Despite witnessing many Beast Tides, the gruesome scene of each attack was still hard to bear. And those hiding in basements and sewers never imagined the defenders, supposed to resist the Beast Tide, would crumble so quickly without real resistance.
The variety of sounds from above frightened the hiding individuals, leaving them trembling, yet they dared not and could not emerge. Poking a head out could result in being torn into pieces by the ferocious beasts. Someone began to sob quietly in fear, scared they too would become a pool of blood, with no chance of survival.
