"Raze!" Ella screamed. She ran in that direction; Gavin tried to hold her but couldn't, so he chased after her, leaving Riker there. The abomination immediately rushed toward where it had thrown Raze, wanting to finish what it started.
Riker stood there, unsure what to do. He had been pretty useless in the midst of all this. The genius of Gavin, Ella, and even his brother Raze overshadowed him. He was incapable of helping in any substantial way, and this made him sick to his gut. He wanted to help, he needed to be of help somehow in this situation.
He gritted his teeth and made the only right decision he could think of, run out of the alley. He needed to find someone to help before the situation got out of hand.
He rushed past the gutters, the water splashing as he ran, his eyes pinned forward. "Everyone wait for me, I'll get some help, I promise," he said.
Riker was a special kind of person. He was talented but didn't believe it. He saw the strength of others, and that no longer allowed him to see his own. But those traits also made him someone capable of growth. He put effort into something, and he pushed through it.
Unlike Andrew, his jealousy drove him to work harder to make himself better. Right now, he hated himself for having to run, but he understood that at the current moment, he wasn't adding anything to that fight. So he would do what he could, and when they all survived, he would take up the staff and train until his body dropped, so that the next time there was a situation, he would stand and not run.
That was the kind of person Riker Grimhold was.
[....]
The abomination blasted through the building that Raze was in. Everyone in that building had already evacuated as fast as they could. It searched for Raze in the rubble but couldn't find him.
"Looking for me?" Raze's voice came from above, and before the abomination could look up, he blasted it with a powerful stream of flames.
"I noticed you don't like fire," he said with a smirk.
"Screeeeeeeeecch!" The abomination screeched and flailed its hands in the air, slamming into the ceiling and everything around. Raze leaped down from the ceiling as air rushed out of the building. The abomination broke out a few seconds later, letting out a reverberating scream before crashing after him with explosive speed, speed that Raze could never hope to outrun.
"Raze, duck!" Gavin, who was coming from the front, yelled, and Raze immediately went low. Gavin's slash and flame arc cut through the air, hitting the abomination right in the chest, leaving a deep cut and knocking it back a few steps.
Raze immediately rushed to stand beside Ella and Gavin. He looked at Gavin and saw him breathing hard. It was evident that Gavin, looking at this thing, was having a reaction.
Due to what he suffered in the story, his body reacted a certain way to any form of demonic energy, and right now, what was coming out of this abomination was mostly demonic, which was affecting him.
"Are you good?" Raze asked, a simple question meant to snap him back. Gavin nodded. "Yes, I am. Let's focus on handling the abomination," he said.
"Way ahead of you two," Ella said and pointed her hands. "Inferno Sword!" She cast her spell, and the sword shot through the air and stabbed the abomination right in the face. It let out a pained screech but then swung its hands so hard it dug into the ground and scraped out huge rocks that moved with the speed of fired arrows.
"Go low!" Raze yelled, and they immediately went down. The rocks shot past, slamming into houses and leaving massive, deep holes. The abomination rushed forward before they could even get up and swung its hands in a way that made them look like rubber. The hands stretched and moved like a whip.
Gavin stepped up and blocked the attack. He was pushed back a few meters but managed to stop it. His hands were shaking, and his legs felt like they would give out, but he kept his head up.
The second arm was coming as well, so Raze moved to handle it. Lifting both hands into the air, over twenty flame arrows formed and fired all at the same time. Each one slammed into the arm and exploded, damaging it and pushing it back, creating enough space for an attack.
"Ella! I don't know what you have, but I'll need you to go all out now!" Raze yelled. He knew there was no way a prodigy from the Raven Academy would be restricted to fire alone. He had seen Ella through God's Eyes, he knew there was more to her, far more.
She looked at Raze; there was some reluctance in her eyes, but then it shifted into conviction. "When I attack, you'll retreat. Until my attacks end, don't come close. When it's over, then you can finish it," she warned and then spread her hands.
She began casting something under her breath. It was the longest spell Raze had seen her use. Lightning crackled around her body; it immediately started spreading, striking the ground all around her as she continued the spell. A blue magical formation formed under her and spread two meters wide.
When she finished casting and opened her eyes, they glowed blue.
"Leave now!" she bellowed, and the two of them immediately retreated. Then she called out the last part of the spell, her red ring suddenly turned blue, and a massive blast of lightning shot forward. Despite it moving ahead, the surge from it struck backward and forward. The lightning destroyed the ground, leaving a massive crater. It slammed into the abomination and instantly obliterated it in half. The lightning went on to destroy the houses beyond it and kept going, tearing through more and more structures.
Raze realized there might be an issue, so he called out to her. "Ella, that's enough! You've taken it down! Ella!" But she couldn't hear him. He surged in her direction, running as fast as he could, leaping into the lightning that was striking all around.
