Zombie…?
The word echoed in their minds like heavy tolls of a city bell. Although they initially refused to believe it, they began to remember Leon's transformation and unimaginable feats.
The claws, the fangs, the inhuman actions, it all came back to their memories. Coupled with the fact that Leon himself admitted it, they became alarmed.
'So the person leading us was a zombie all long?'
This was the collective thoughts in their minds. Professor Oliver looked at Leon with a calm expression, not understanding why the young man chose to reveal this information. And why did he say he was a zombie?
'He could have just explained that he's an Undead… whatever he called it.'
The old man racked his brains but failed to understand Leon's thoughts. Before he could think of defending him, someone spoke.
"So what?"
Amelia's sharp voice cut through the murmurings. The others looked at her in surprise. Unlike them, the older evolved who had started the shelter with Leon were already aware.
"So what if he's a zombie? Can't stand it? Feeling like you've been fooled, huh?"
Her words grew increasingly colder, almost matching Anna in coldness. Even Leon was surprised by her actions in defending him.
"Leon gave you food, gave you shelter, saved your families, gave you evolution potions so you can be strong. And yet, you feel somehow just because he's a zombie?"
Her words hit like a punch to the gut. Indeed, Leon had provided them with shelter, food, and strength, what else could they ask for? Still, a few couldn't easily accept it.
"But… it doesn't change the fact that he's a zombie, right? I mean, boss… he's been pretty chill and all, but what if he suddenly decides to attack us all?"
Bob explained his concerns with a frown. He finally understood why he was always uneasy around the young man.
This time, Cassie replied, though she wasn't calm at it.
"Shut the fuck up!"
She stood up, slamming the table. The mundane table groaned from the impact of her fury.
"You talk about him attacking you?! Fuck! I can't believe it! You think my brother would attack you without reason? That's pure idiocy."
Her words silenced Bob as he clenched his jaws.
"In the second dungeon raid, my brother risked his life to save Amelia, else she'll be long dead. And you dare to consider him killing you? Unless you have a skeleton in your closet, I'll only say you're stupid."
The conference room went silent as she reluctantly sat down after being pulled by Anna. In the end, Bob could only lower his head and say, "I apologize."
The girl scoffed but didn't reply him.
"Are you guys done with the farce?"
As if the arguments hadn't been about him, Leon spoke casually.
The evolveds who had just learned his true identity gulped, realizing he didn't care about their reactions. He simply took it as a casual reveal.
"That will be all for today. If there are other information, I'll pass it to you."
Saying that, he stood up from the seat at the head of the table, then left the room. Cassie and Anna immediately followed him, but he stopped them.
"You should spend some time quelling any rebellion. If they prove stubborn, kill them."
Saying this, he stepped out of the tower and left the shelter, his destination unknown.
"Brother…"
Watching his lonely back, Cassie whispered with moist eyes. At least until Anna slapped her back, hard.
"Do you think your brother would be affected by that farce? Grow up. He simply has something to do."
Although she didn't know what exactly he intended to do, she had a vague suspicion in her heart.
.....
On the empty roads, Leon leisurely walked towards a predetermined location. He didn't run, nor did he move slowly. He simply moved at a pace comfortable to him.
'Humans are predictable creatures guided by unpredictable emotions. Just the fact that I said I was a zombie was enough to earn distrust.'
He had intentionally revealed that secret. Although his bangs hid the crystal well, he wasn't going to rely on that all the time. Also, he was sure that none of them would betray him. Although they might feel wary, they wouldn't want to leave his shelter and protection. It was a simple carrot-and-stick ideology.
Caw! Caw!
A sound from above interrupted his thoughts as he spotted a familiar crow circling in the air above him.
"You again?"
He couldn't help but feel suspicious. The last time the crow had appeared, it was because it wanted to eat the zombie corpses. Now, it had appeared again, when he wanted to perform a massacre.
"An animal's intuition is frightening." He smiled thinly, "Come here~"
The bird obeyed and landed on his shoulder, its red beady eyes staring at him intently. It had evolved since the last time they met and had become a third level mutated beast. The blue crystal on its head was an evidence.
"Well, let's have a feast, then."
Smiling at his fellow carnivore, Leon strode towards the borders of Detroit. He wasn't filled with revenge like Jayden and the others, but instead, cold logic.
As long as someone dared to take something that belonged to him, he wouldn't hesitate to wipe them out of existence. This was just the basic wrath of an Undead Devourer.
It took him hours to arrive, which he didn't mind. By the time he saw the barricaded walls of the shelter, it was already evening.
"The smell of human meat, truly appreciative~"
Caw!
The crow on his shoulder cawed in agreement, earning a chuckle from him.
"Stop right there!"
The evolved guarding the walls immediately called out with their weapons drawn. After the blow they suffered last night, they were extra cautious.
Seeing someone in neat plain clothes with a strange crow on his shoulder filled them with deep unease.
Leon stopped, then raised his head to look at them. His gaze was cold and intimidating. They took an involuntary step back, feeling their unease swell.
Clap! Clap!
Leon's clap echoed twice, like a person signaling for a waiter.
"Let's have dinner, shall we?"
