"Can you explain? What do you mean?" Jonathan asked the person on the phone, a frown on his face.
Curious, since he was starng at me as he asked, I started. "Who is…?" But I couldn't get all the words out before he shushed me with his fingers on my lips.
Shocked, I simply stared at him as he continued with the call.
"If I find anything. I'll make sure to call you… Alright… Yeah, we should meet soon for a meeting." He said and dropped the call.
"Didn't you get the hint that you should have kept quiet?" He said, sounding frustrated.
I simply shrugged. "Why were you looking at me like you wanted to say something then?" I asked, not at all fazed.
He sighed. "That was Eleni's husband. He asked if I'd reached out to her as an afterthought, but I think I was able to convince him."
"That's good then. Even if he doesn't believe you, I doubt he will come here to look for her."
I stared with wide eyes as Jonathan went back to lay down on the bed. "What are you doing?" I asked, glancing at the clock. It was almost 8 o'clock now.
He started scrolling on his phone. "What does it look like? Resting."
Huh? "Don't you have a meeting today? Aren't you usually very busy on Saturday?"
He turned to me, looking me straight in the eyes. "I usually am, but I made sure not to be today. We are supposed to be married. Me being out or in my office throughout the day won't really send the message across."
I shook my head. "So you're staying home throughout today?" How was I meant to survive this, then? I had planned to practice cooking with some cookbooks I'd bought earlier in the week as I had started building interest in it, and not once had I considered the fact that Jonathan would be home with me. Most of the Saturdays we'd had since we got married, Jonathan had left as early as possible and returned at night, and on the days he didn't have work outside, he was usually locked up in his office, which suited me just fine.
Jonathan glanced at the wall clock. "Yes. I'm free throughout today. Do you have a problem with that?"
Except the fact that I didn't want to be around him for a whole day? I didn't ask that but instead shook my head. "Of course not. Being a workaholic is not exactly a good title."
With that, I stood up, grabbed some clean clothes, and went to the bathroom, trying to imagine how tense and uncomfortable today was going to be. I didn't hate my husband, at least, not anymore, but I was more comfortable with him when I was at work than at home and I guessed my husband felt the same way.
I came out of the bathroom dressed and started heading to the door but Jonathan grabbed my arm, stopping me. I could guess what was going through his mind, the lectures he had never failed to give me but I didn't really care what was going through his mind except the fact that we both needed to cooperate for things to go well.
"Are you going out?" He asked, glancing down at my clothes. I was wearing a blue cropped top and a skirt that was almost reaching my knee and I knew why he had asked. Even I thought the cloth was a little too cute to wear in the house.
I rolled my eyes and removed my arm from his grip. "Are you trying to control my movement or what? Don't worry, I'm just going to have breakfast." I responded, just to be annoying. Behaving like a seven year old was proving to be fun.
He opened his mouth to reply to that but I brought my hand up. "I know what I'm meant to do. Don't worry, neither you nor I want anyone finding out about this."
I glanced at him and left the room, going through what I wanted to do that day. I was going to behave like he didn't exist and do everything I wanted to. It wasn't like his presence was meant to mean anything.
I went down the stairs and smiled at Eleni who was lounging on one of the chairs and sipping what was probably coffee.
"Good morning. How was your night?" I greeted and she smiled back at me.
"It was good. Hope you don't mind that I took the liberty of using the coffee machine." She said, gesturing to her cup of what was now confirmed coffee. "I brewed more than I needed. Should I make a cup for you?"
I shook my head. "I try not to drink coffee at home before eating. How do you feel now? Is the pain better?"
She shrugged and followed me into the kitchen. "It's better than yesterday but I will be lying if I say I'm completely fine. I'm sure one day I'll wake up without any pain but that day is not today." She replied, making a funny expression with her face and making me sputter out a laugh. I hadn't really expected that.
Even with the bruises, nothing could hide the fact that Eleni was a gorgeous woman, her tanned skin tone, dark long hair, hazel eyes and defines eyebrows were only some of her catching features and I hadn't expected someone with those stunning features to be able to make herself look this silly.
"What are you thinking?" She asked, her voice holding laughter. We were seated at the small table in the kitchen.
I shrugged. "That you are very beautiful? I don't know how a human being would do what your husband did."
She laughed. "You said a human being. I don't think he is but I don't really want to think about him. I'm starting my life over and want to forget everything."
I nodded. "And I'll be here to help you every step of the way."
She looked doubtful as she took another sip of her coffee so I grabbed her hands. "I'm being sincere with you. I don't know how you've lived and what you've learnt to believe but I'm going to help youb learn the real world." Like me finding justice for my father wasn't enough of a challenge for me. I nearly shook my head.
She brightened. "Thanks. How about your husband? He doesn't seem like the type to sleep in on a weekend." She moved closer to me and whispered. "Everytime I've seen him, he is always working. I think it could be because of the guilt he feels towards his brother. Was he originally a workaholic or was what happened what made him start acting like this? I'm sure he treats you differently though. He acts like a very sweet and considerate husband to you right?"
There it was again. His brother. So far, I'd gone back after his father's birthday and searched for news about his brother but it was like it never happened. Everything had been cleaned thoroughly. There were no pictures, images, nothing, which had made me feel like I'd dreamt of what I had seen in his parents house. But it made no sense, why would his mother display those things and tell me they weren't for Jonathan when she must have been part of the plan to wipe away everything from the internet.
"Yeah. His brother was a big impact in his behavior now." I said, infusing my voice with confidence. This was the perfect opportunity to find all I could about his brother.
She sighed. "I guessed as much. He's still so young. It's a pity that his brother did what he did a day to their anniversary. He won't have gotten over it, right? It's just been three years and nobody can tell someone else when the years are enough to grieve." She put her hands on her tummy and my heart broke.
She was right, nobody could quantify the right time for someone else to grieve. Even me that my father had been gone for most of my life. I could barely remember details about him. How much more, my husband or Eleni's grief.
She rubbed her eyes. "Even though I didn't want it, it still feels like I just lost it. I don't know what's wrong with me."
I grabbed her hands and she held mine tighter as I consoled her without a word, just letting her feel whatever she was feeling. What was really happening was the fact that I could think of literally nothing to use to console her. Would a promise of retribution to her husband do? While I was considering bringing it up and further complicating my life, Jonathan entered the kitchen. As if she didn't want to get caught by him in a vulnerable position, Eleni removed her hands and fake smiled at Jonathan. "Want a cup of coffee?"
JONATHAN'S POV
My eyes went to the room I'd sealed shut. With the so many things that had been going on, I'd not had enough time to focus on Ethan's investigation. I'd gone to exercise in the home gym, taking a detour to get something from my car, when I'd seen an envelope with no name or sender address, much like the envelopes I'd received that had contained blood stained objects.
I opened the envelope and sure enough, it was a stabbed toy with red paint that was inside. My eyes narrowed at the words that accompanied it for the first time. "I know what you did. You are the guilty one." I closed the envelope and threw it into the cupboard in my wardrobe, making sure to lock it after.
I didn't need anybody to tell me I was doing more than could be considered normal. I was simply using Eleni as an excuse to fulfill my selfish desire. I could easily have come up with something when Danielle had mentioned that we shared the same room or simply have told her to mind her business, but I hadn't since I hadn't been able to get what I wanted just yet.
I washed up and got dressed in a casual tee and jeans and went downstairs. Operation be the perfect couple was now in motion. I got closer to the kitchen and was about to open the door when I heard Eleni's voice. "I guessed as much. He's still so young. It's a pity that his brother did what he did, a day to their anniversary. He won't have gotten over it, right? It's just been three years and nobody can tell someone else when the years are enough to grieve"
I squeezed my hands into a fist and waited at the door for what else they would say. When no other word came in after about five minutes, I entered the kitchen.
Eleni looked at me and I couldn't miss her red-rimmed eyes. "Want a cup of coffee?" She asked.
I shook my head. "I can get mine. Is everything okay?"
She laughed even though it was obviously fake. "Of course. What else will be the matter? Thanks again for letting me stay here."
I glanced at Danielle who had left the table when I had entered the kitchen and was now perusing some cupboards.
"Are you looking for something?" I asked her. I saw her take a quick glance at Eleni who wasn't hiding her interest in us.
She nodded. "I was looking for the pancake mix or maybe some flour. I want to try my hands at pancake."
I arched my eyebrows. "Really? There should be some in the pantry. You want to make pancake?"
She rolled her eyes, making sure I was the only one that saw it. "Yes. I said as much."
I smiled. "Of course. You should check the pantry or would you like my help?"
Eleni cut in, looking baffled. "You've never made pancake before?" She asked my wife who blushed.
"I have but it didn't turn out good. I'm not good at cooking but I want to learn now. Do you know how to? Are you good at it?" She replied her. She didn't give her the catty remark she had given me.
Eleni shook her head. "I don't know how to but I'm not really interested in learning. A pair, aren't we?"
I remembered what I wanted to tell her when I was coming downstairs. "Has Alexios tried to reach you?"
She paled and Danielle frowned at me. "Why are you asking her that? Don't you know she's meant to be healing from trauma that is associated with him?"
I frowned back. She was aware that her husband had called me to ask of her so why would she believe I would keep it to myself? Wouldn't it be better for her to know so she would be prepared if he did reach out to her?
Eleni shook her head. "I deleted his number and threw my phone away before I came here so I don't know. Did he call you?"
Danielle was staring at me earnestly and shaking her head but I ignored it. "Yes, he did. He was just asking if I'd seen you. He's probably reaching out to people that have been in contact with you one way or the other. I'm just telling you so you will know. I'm not trying to scare you."
Danielle rolled her eyes and went to Eleni. "He will not be able to find you. You said nobody knew when you left Greece apart from the people that Jonathan sent right? He won't be able to trace you and if he ever does, I'll kill him myself."
I arched my brows at her tone. She absolutely meant it. Eleni nodded, probably also believing her. "He had a camera on my phone that he used to watch me so I threw it away in the hospital before coming here."
Danielle nodded. "Then there's no reason to worry. Nothing will happen to you while you're here. I can promise you that."
I arched my brows again. Didn't she know how dangerous it was to promise that kind of thing? Eleni nodded and took her cup to the sink, rinsing it. "I feel tired all of a sudden. I want to go and rest."
Danielle frowned. "How about breakfast?"
Eleni smiled bleakly. "I'm not hungry. You can keep some for me."
Danielle nodded and the moment Eleni left the kitchen, she turned to me, looking incredulous. "Don't you know how scared she is of that bastard? Why would you tell her he called you?"
I shrugged. "It's better that she knows so she can be prepared."
She scoffed. "Of course you will think so." Her phone started ringing and she looked at it, her expression a little vague. "My phone is ringing and I need to take it."
I nodded and watched her leave the kitchen, her eyes not leaving the vibrating phone.
