Married to my suspect

Chapter 32: CHAPTER THIRTY TWO

"Is she sleeping?" He asked as he entered the living room, but I kept quiet. I was burning with anger right now. I was aware how influential my husband was, much more in Greece and yet, could he really have done nothing to have tried to protect his friend?

He dropped the packages he had been holding on the floor and tiptoed to where he could see Eleni's face and crouched. "Why isn't she in the guest room?"

I guess I had to answer that. "Because she slept here. She was probably exhausted, and her injuries and jet lag made it worse." I replied in a harsh tone and he lifted his brows.

Curiosity got the best of me and I glanced at what he had dropped. What was it? I didn't think our house needed any renovation, and I hadn't placed any order for anything since I'd gotten here.

Jonathan saw where my attention was and stood up from where he was crouching. "I still have to get to the car. I bought some blankets, heating pads and oils. The hospital recommended them."

My eyes widened. How sweet. But I was still mad at him. I followed him to the garage and we both brought the remaining things to the house.

"Did you leave her to go and buy these things?" I asked, a little gently. His sweet side for his friend was unfortunately making me melt. Not for him personally, but I was a sucker for kind people.

He nodded. "She told me to leave, that she needed to get herself ready to meet you. Did she tell you what happened?"

I nodded and glared at him, not responding. He glanced at me and didn't try to start another conversation as I microwaved our dinner and set the table.

Jonathan came back from setting up what he had bought in the guest room and freshening up, and I glanced at Eleni. Was I to wake her up or wait for her to wake up herself? Thankfully, she took the decision away from my hands as she started stirring. She sat up, looking around with a panicked expression that eventually cleared when she saw me. She looked down at herself. "I must have slept off. It's been a rough few days."

I nodded. "Of course. Take all the time you can to rest. Would you like to eat now?"

"Sure." She said and stood up, joining us at the table, and I stood up to fix her another plate.

*************************************************************************

I stood at the foot of the bed and stared at the bed, wondering how unlucky I was to have to go through this again. Especially since we had agreed the day before that things were going back to our kind of normal. It had all been because of the dinner.

Dinner had started fairly well, I'd fixed everyone a plate of the delicious mashed potato our housekeeper had prepared earlier that day, and we'd started eating in silence. The silence had soon gotten overwhelming for Eleni, and she had begun asking us questions. The conversation flowed from then, and she mentioned how she and Jonathan had exactly met and how merely his presence had been a comfort for her because it meant getting her husband away from her to work, and that was why she had quickly become friends with him.

She had then moved on to the topic of our marriage and how sad she was not to have attended, as well as how happy she had been when she had first seen me and how she loved the chemistry between us. I couldn't blame her, her injuries must have made her imagine what wasn't real, cause there was zero chemistry between us. Either that, or, we had gotten perfect at acting.

After that, she had asked questions and explained what she wanted to do when she healed completely but what had brought me back to this room was the fact that she had asked if we shared a room out of curiosity and looking for references for the book she was writing, a favorite pastime of hers, and unable to tell the truth, I'd blurted out yes. So here I was, back in Jonathan's room.

Jonathan came out of the bathroom in a robe with wet hair and eyes sparkling with amusement. "So what's going to happen now?" He asked, obviously teasing me.

I rolled my eyes, grabbed my robe and stomped into the bathroom. That reminded me, I was still mad at him.

I came out, my robe tied firmly to my body and without so much as a glance at him, laid on the side I'd slept in the day before.

Jonathan turned off the light and I felt the bed dip as he laid beside me. I was tired, and my eyes needed sleep, but I wasn't sure I could allow myself to fall asleep. If only I could tell the days I would have nightmares and gauge it, this would have been easier.

Thirty minutes passed in silence like that, and I turned to make myself more comfortable, only to find myself staring at my husband's jaws. I risked a look-up and found his eyes on me. How long had he been watching me for?

"Having trouble sleeping?" He asked and I shrugged.

I closed my eyes and pretended I was a statue, but I could still feel his eyes on me. Uncomfortable, I shifted again and turned my back on him.

"Can I ask you something?" I asked in a whisper. If we weren't sleeping, I might as well ask him questions I needed answers to.

"Sure." He replied in a louder and more assured tone of voice, and strangely I wanted to break that confidence. What was going on with me? Was it the exhaustion?

"If you knew what Eleni was going through. Was there really nothing you could have done apart from making her husband busy with work? Are the wealthy people really that lawless that a child will be given in marriage to someone that old and cruel? I don't understand."

"For the most part, they are, but Eleni was legal before she was given in marriage, so there wasn't much the law could do. Plus, her husband is very influential, and she is good at making herself look and appear older than she actually is, so I don't think plenty of people care."

I shook my head. That was so damned unfair. "Is her husband more influential than you are. Couldn't you have, I don't know, spoken to him or maybe threatened him? Maybe that would have helped before he almost killed her."

Jonathan sighed. "Yes. he's much older and has been in the business for more years than I have, which means I don't have plenty of say with him, especially in Greece. The past is past. Now, we have to focus on her healing and her husband hopefully filing for divorce so she can finally be free of him."

"Is that possible? For someone that is used to such power trip, won't that be difficult for him to let go of? What happens if he finds out she's with you? Will he come here to get her back?" Okay, maybe I've watched a little too many dramas.

"I doubt he will go that far. I'm sure he still has things he's busy with. Plus, he has never kept quiet about his hatred for America, which was why this was the first place Eleni thought of. We'll have to see, though. For now, she's safe here as this place has a very good security and I don't think she would like to step outside for a while."

I nodded. "How about Michelle? Will she mind?" I realized how stupid that question was as soon as it left my mouth. What did she have to mind about when she was being paid to come here? "Don't bother answering." I rebutted and yawned. Amazingly, his unbothered voice and our conversation was helping lull me to sleep.

"What will happen if I wake you up again today like yesterday?" I whispered, sleepily.

"Don't worry about it and just sleep. I'll wake you up before it gets that bad."

My eyes closed as I surrendered to the sleep, and I thought I felt myself being covered very well by the duvet. When I woke up the next morning, he was no longer beside me. It was almost seven a.m but since it was the weekend, I didn't mind that much. Today would be a little different, since Jonathan and I had always spent more than half of our weekends apart. Maybe he had gone because of that.

As I rubbed my eyes, trying to believe that I'd had a good night of rest, my phone started ringing. I picked it up from the nightstand and answered when I saw it was Lillian.

"Hey Lillian." I greeted, feeling a little apologetic that I hadn't reached out to her since the last time we spoke. I'd meant to, but with so many things going on with me, I'd forgotten about it.

"Hi. Did I wake you up?" She asked, her voice as cheerful as always.

"Nope. How are you doing?"

She laughed. "I know right. I was curious if you have any plans for tonight. Lucas and I are going on a date, and we'd love for you guys to join us."

I thought about it and no way did it sound reasonable. "Let me think about it. We've been really busy this week, and we were thinking to just chill at home. I'll check back with you when I confirm if we can make it."

"Really?" She asked, her tone a little high-pitched.

"Yeah." I replied. "Are you okay?"

She laughed. "Oh, you know how clumsy I can be. I'm good. I'll be waiting for your call then. I hope you'll be able to make it, though. I've missed you."

I smiled. "I've missed you too. I'll try to do so." I turned my head as the door opened and Jonathan came inside with his phone on his ears. "Of course. He was still busy with work even on a weekend."

"Alright. I'll leave you to it." She said and dropped the call.
