Chapter 1239: The Legend of the Holy Daughter

"If you two insist on going out, I can't stop you. The library is just outside, turn left, walk along the street, take the first right turn, and go straight to the end. It's about a ten-minute walk, not too far. I hope you both go there early and return early, don't linger outside." Granny Mary didn't persist in dissuading them but instead told them the location of the library.

"Thank you." Lin Tian and the others expressed their gratitude simultaneously, then headed out. As they passed under the wooden sign of the Fengye Inn, Granny Mary's wistful sigh echoed from within the inn.

"The street is so quiet, it's as if all the townspeople have disappeared," Lin Tian said, shaking his head.

"This small town is only slightly larger than the villages and towns back in our country, and the population isn't large. When something happens, it spreads to everyone immediately. Before the issue of the beast attack is fully resolved, people here are unlikely to venture out late," Xiao Manxue observed the shops and houses around the street and spoke softly.

In fact, there weren't many shops on either side of the street. Judging by the signs hanging outside, there were only a handful, making it seem like a self-sufficient small town where commercial trade wasn't very developed.

With Lin Tian and the other's pace, they reached the first intersection after speaking those two sentences. After turning right, it didn't take long to arrive at a three-story building. In front of it stood a sign with the English word "Library" written on it.

The library wasn't even taller than the Fengye Inn but, its width was much greater. The exterior walls of the library were floor-to-ceiling windows, allowing a view of the faint light glowing inside.

Lin Tian pushed the door open and went inside. Right in front was a counter, with a middle-aged man sitting behind it. Initially engrossed in reading, he looked up upon hearing someone open the door.

"Oh, two young people, you look unfamiliar, not from this town, are you?" The middle-aged man said, a bit surprised to see two strangers.

From this sentence, it was evident that Sorlin Castle wasn't large; in a bigger town, the library administrator wouldn't point out that the visitors looked unfamiliar because he couldn't possibly know everyone in a large town, even among the local residents, there would be many strangers.

Lin Tian nodded, "We're from outside, working for a magazine. Recently, our editor wants to do a feature about the local customs of a small town, so we've come to Sorlin Castle, and thus, to Sorlin Castle's library, hoping to search for historical documents to see if there's any usable information."

Xiao Manxue found it amusing; Lin Tian's words sounded genuine. She was just pondering what reason to give for checking historical documents, but Lin Tian had cleverly provided a valid excuse right away.

Small towns like this seldom receive attention from outside media, let alone being featured in magazines. The middle-aged administrator indeed laughed upon hearing this and said warmly, "Oh, it's a magazine from outside. No one has ever promoted Sorlin Castle before, welcome. If you need documents, I can guide you."

Hearing that a magazine feature was to be written about the town, the middle-aged administrator eagerly volunteered to guide Lin Tian and Xiao Manxue.

Lin Tian politely said, "No need to trouble you to guide us, just tell us the location, and we'll check on our own slowly."

"Alright, the historical books are on the third floor, and the documents about Sorlin Castle are on the last bookshelf of the third floor," the administrator readily informed them.

The historical books kept in the library weren't considered confidential, so the administrator didn't mention any particular precautions.

"Thanks." Lin Tian expressed his gratitude and went up the stairs with Xiao Manxue.

Since the town's buildings generally had pointed roofs, the third floor was the top level, appearing much more spacious; however, there were fewer bookshelves compared to the first and second floors.

Moreover, there was a peculiar phenomenon: besides the administrator, there wasn't a single person borrowing or reading books in the library. In the middle of each floor, there was a reading area, but all the desks were empty, not a person in sight.

Lin Tian and Xiao Manxue reached the last row of shelves, which contained historical volumes, all in English. However, this posed no difficulty for Lin Tian and Xiao Manxue, who found Sorlin Castle's town annals at the end of the bookshelf.

Like county annals, town annals are specialized books recording a place's history, geography, customs, notable figures, education, products, and climate.

Lin Tian went directly to the significant events section and leafed through them by year to check the notable occurrences of sixty years ago. Surprisingly, the events of that year were missing. There were significant events recorded for sixty-one and fifty-nine years ago, but the year sixty years ago was blank.

"It's empty, could Granny Mary's mention of sixty years be coincidental? What exactly happened that year?" Lin Tian mused aloud, puzzled.

Sixty years is not short; in Huaxia, it is a "jiazi," a cycle. The children of that time would now be elderly, and the adults back then would have already passed away.

Lin Tian checked other years and found that the origin of Sorlin Castle was that old castle; this land, a long time ago, was the fief of Sorlin Castle's owner.

With time, the feudal land of the nobility vanished, forming today's Sorlin Castle. Even that ancient castle remained.

Lin Tian's puzzled murmuring received no response from Xiao Manxue. He turned curiously to her, finding her absorbed in a book.

"Miss, what are you reading? I just mentioned that the notable events section lacks records from sixty years ago." Lin Tian spoke again.

Xiao Manxue didn't lift her head, continuing to read while replying, "I'm reading the biographical section. There used to be a position of the Holy Daughter in Sorlin Castle, but the last mention of this position was sixty years ago. From that year onwards, it ceased to appear."

"Sixty years ago, again sixty years ago, what happened in Sorlin Castle then? There hadn't been any vampire sightings before, why have they suddenly appeared recently?" Lin Tian said in confusion, feeling that there was an intrinsic connection between these two events.

Xiao Manxue closed the book and looked up at Lin Tian, seriously saying, "Do you think the sudden appearance of vampires in Sorlin Castle is related to the events of sixty years ago?"

"It's just an intuition, especially given Granny Mary's words, 'Sixty years, he's back'. Who is 'he'? In sixty years, a young man of twenty could have become an old man unable to walk. There was a hint of fear in Granny Mary's tone; 'he' would at least be an eighty-year-old man now, already half-buried in the dirt, posing no actual threat. What is there to fear about such an old man?"

"Even if 'he' was just a baby back then, he'd be sixty now, which is considered old." Lin Tian shook his head, puzzled over what Granny Mary was afraid of.

"Are you inquiring about the events from sixty years ago?" A voice suddenly emerged from behind the bookshelf.
