Chapter 1045: Chapter 1045: I Am Half Dead
Minutes passed in a blur of dodging and placing. The entire training ground gradually transformed into a giant, complex runic formation under her feet. Only when the final link snapped into place did Bai Xifeng finally stop her movements and grin widely.
"Teacher Ji!" Bai Xifeng called out, panting slightly.
"What?" Ji Yuan glanced up, his fingers still dancing on the strings.
"Welcome to my personal territory." Bai Xifeng grinned, her eyes flashing with triumph.
The very next second, she clapped her hands together, and every single hidden rune activated simultaneously.
BOOM!!!
The entire training ground erupted into a blinding flash of elemental fury. The wind howled like a wild beast, water surged in waves, massive stone pillars shot upward to block his vision, and countless glowing runic chains emerged from the earth, racing toward his position to bind him.
Even Ji Yuan’s long, pristine sleeves fluttered wildly from the resulting immense shockwave. For the first time since the battle had commenced, Chuntian’s melody paused for a mere half a breath.
Bai Xifeng instantly noticed that tiny lapse in his rhythm.
"I finally got you!" Bai Xifeng mumbled under her breath, a victorious smile forming.
Unfortunately for her, a single, deep note rang out from the gazebo. The enormous, intricate formation she had spent several gruelling minutes constructing immediately collapsed like a house of cards. Every rune shattered into stardust. Every chain dissolved into thin air. Every pillar crumbled back into harmless soil. The entire chaotic battlefield instantly returned to absolute, dead silence.
Bai Xifeng froze entirely, her jaw slacking. Ji Yuan calmly stood up, brushing a speck of dust from his robes.
"You spent far too much time preparing your traps." Ji Yuan stated flatly, analysing her flaw. "In a real battle, your enemy would have killed you twice over."
Then, he reached down and flicked a final, heavy string on the guqin.
DING!
A massive, visible sound wave rippled through the air, striking Bai Xifeng head-on before she could even raise her arms.
Boom!
Bai Xifeng flew backwards through the air like a broken doll before crashing hard into the dirt several dozen meters away. She lay there flat on her back, completely motionless. After several long seconds of pathetic silence, she weakly raised one trembling hand into the air.
"I... I surrender..." Bai Xifeng stated, her voice muffled by the dirt.
"Hmm," Ji Yuan calmly put Chuntian away into his inner world, completely unbothered.
Bai Xifeng stared blankly up at the sky with a thoroughly lifeless expression. Today, she had learned two very valuable things. First, music could definitely be used as a terrifying weapon in combat. Second, her teacher was an absolute monster.
Then, a face suddenly appeared directly above Bai Xifeng, who was still lying entirely flat and defeated on the hard ground. It was Xie Lanying, looking down at her with an amused expression.
"Are you okay?" Xie Lanying asked, poking her lightly.
"I am half dead." Bai Xifeng groaned dramatically, refusing to move a single muscle.
"That means you are not dead yet." Xie Lanying replied, offering absolutely zero sympathy.
"Heartless." Bai Xifeng accused, pouting at the sky.
Slowly and with great effort, Bai Xifeng pulled herself upright into a sitting position and reached into her spatial storage rune for several healing elixirs. She uncorked the bottles one after another and drank them down quickly, feeling the medicinal properties instantly go to work to recover both her physical superficial injuries and her completely depleted spiritual energy.
"When exactly did you come?" Bai Xifeng asked, wiping her mouth after finishing the very last bottle.
"Well... probably somewhere right in the middle of your fight." Xie Lanying stated casually.
"Oh... So you just stood there and really enjoyed watching me get ruthlessly beaten up." Bai Xifeng said, narrowing her eyes.
"Hmm... I have to admit, it is quite entertaining." Xie Lanying nodded seriously, a small smirk playing on her lips. "After all, not many people in this school can actually put the great Bai Xifeng into this kind of miserable state."
Bai Xifeng could not help but roll her eyes hard at Xie Lanying’s brutally honest assessment of her suffering.
"I am going to clean up and change my clothes first." Bai Xifeng said, pushing herself up to stand.
After that intense fight with Teacher Ji, she was completely covered from head to toe in dirt, sweat, and kicked-up dust. Staying in those filthy, ruined clothes for another minute would make her incredibly uncomfortable.
"I am coming with you." Xie Lanying stated immediately, standing up from her spot.
"Alright. Come on, then." Bai Xifeng nodded.
She could perfectly understand why Xie Lanying did not feel comfortable or relaxed remaining entirely alone in the training yard with the intimidating Ji Yuan. Therefore, she had absolutely no objection to bringing her friend back to the safety of her private courtyard.
The two girls walked down the path and soon arrived at Bai Xifeng’s spacious residence.
"You know, being the only student in an entire division is actually not bad at all." Xie Lanying commented appreciatively as she looked around the quiet grounds. "You get your own massive private space without anyone bothering you."
"Do you have to share your living area with a lot of other students?" Bai Xifeng asked curiously.
"All of the common areas and courtyards are shared except for the actual sleeping quarters." Xie Lanying explained. "Even then, each individual room is shared by two students. Luckily, I happen to share my room with Qingge, so it’s fine."
"Oh... I see." Bai Xifeng nodded thoughtfully, realising how spoiled she was by her current arrangement. "Well, you can walk around if you want, or just sit over there in the pavilion. I am going to run inside and take a quick shower."
