Chapter 425: Chapter 425: Where is the Backbone
Vera Xavier shrugged. "My boyfriend said if you don’t agree to this addendum, he won’t let me sign."
When Nathaniel Nathan was drafting the addendum last night, she had watched from the side, the corners of her mouth twitching. But when she remembered Alistair Forrest’s practically shameless personality, she figured adding it was a pretty good idea after all.
Alistair Forrest clutched his chest. "Honey, you’re a modern woman. You can’t just listen to everything your boyfriend says! You need to resist!"
Vera Xavier said with a smile, "I like my boyfriend a lot, so I listen to his opinions. If he’s unhappy because I signed this contract, then I’ll be unhappy too."
’The truth was, she was just afraid of Nathaniel Nathan giving her trouble with that icy look of his.’
Alistair Forrest, however, felt like he’d just had a massive PDA shoved in his face. He glared at her. "Can you have a little backbone?"
"I have plenty of backbone!" Vera Xavier argued. "There’s an old Chinese saying: ’A harmonious family prospers.’ I’m not going to let someone else cause a fight between me and my boyfriend."
Alistair Forrest felt those words stab him right in the heart. ’So Nathaniel Nathan was her boyfriend, and he was just "other people"!’
’This "someone else" was really hurt, okay!’
He couldn’t help but ask, "Could you please stop bringing up your boyfriend all the time?"
"I can’t," Vera Xavier said seriously. "Before I came here, my boyfriend said he’d definitely punch you if he came along. So, to save you from a beating, he stayed home. Then he told me to keep mentioning him in front of you so you’d know just how deep our love is."
Alistair Forrest let out a long sigh. "You two, that’s enough!"
Vera Xavier gave a light laugh and asked him, "So, are we going to sign this contract or not?"
’Alistair Forrest felt this was the most exasperating negotiation of his entire life. This wasn’t a contract; it was his own personal treaty of surrender!’
’It was just his luck to run into someone like Vera Xavier—unimpressed by money, genuinely skilled, and the very person his grandfather had insisted he sign. If he ended up not signing with her because of that damn addendum, his grandfather would tear him limb from limb the moment he found out!’
He took a deep breath and said, "Sign! Of course, we’re signing! Why wouldn’t we sign!"
Seeing the flicker of anger on his face, Vera Xavier found it rather amusing. ’Did he really need to get so angry over that little addendum?’
Alistair Forrest called his assistant in to amend the contract with the terms Vera Xavier had just raised, then he called Master Forrest.
Master Forrest agreed to Vera’s conditions as soon as he heard them. Those stipulations didn’t fundamentally change the deal. For a jewelry business, a single large purchase of jade was enough for a whole year of sales—provided, of course, that the quality of that jade was top-notch.
Although Vera Xavier hadn’t made any explicit guarantees, her success at the stone-gambling session this time was the best assurance he could ask for.
Alistair Forrest then hesitantly mentioned the addendum. Far from getting angry, Master Forrest started laughing. "Looks like you’ve finally met your match! I told you ages ago to stop womanizing all over the place. Not every girl is going to fall for that routine of yours."
"Also, you’re getting to be about that age, and you’re so keen on chasing girls these days. When you get back this time, I’ll introduce you to a few socialites. You can just pick your favorite and get married."
"No way!" Alistair Forrest refused outright. "I’m still young! I’m not just going to marry some random girl! We can talk about marriage some other time."
