Wasteland Commander

Chapter 97: The Couriers

Li Xiang was killed, and the people around him suddenly panicked.

The desire to survive made them try their last struggle, but the room full of zombies wasn't going to go easy on them.

Under Wang Huining's suppression, they could barely hold back, but once these food sources began to rebel, Wang Huining couldn't control them at all.

In an instant, the police station room turned into a Chaotic Scene.

Dozens of people were slaughtered within five seconds.

The zombies began their feast.

Everyone was killed, and Wang Huining even felt some regret.

He should have left someone alive to get more information.

He had come here full of vengeance, only to find just a bunch of weak, sick, and old people; not a single person from Ye Fan's Dawn Army was here, which frustrated him greatly.

It was like practicing, building strength, holding it for years, and just when delivering the most stunning punch of your life, you hit a cotton ball instead.

"Where did Ye Fan go?"

Wang Huining paced indoors and finally came to Ye Fan's former seat.

He saw a map on the wall behind it.

It was a map of this province.

There was a prominent check mark on the map.

The marked spot was a place called Kao Mountain Farm.

Wang Huining stood there for a while and understood why the person earlier dared to insult him.

"So he went to Kao Mountain Farm."

"Now that I've discovered your whereabouts, your days are numbered."

Wang Huining left Chengguan Town, leading his zombie army, retracing their path.

From here to Kao Mountain Farm, it would take nearly a week on foot.

But he relished this journey, this week's time was Ye Fan's countdown to doom.

*********

The static of electricity buzzed over the broadcast.

After the power outage, there were fewer broadcasts in the Huacheng Region.

Some forces capable of independent power generation could still broadcast, but those who couldn't were immediately rendered deaf and mute.

However, many people could still listen in.

If a car battery still had power, they could listen, or if some people's semiconductors were charged beforehand, they could last a while, but not for long.

Under such circumstances, the Dawn Army began broadcasting externally.

Gao Dongliang transitioned from broadcaster to technician, now with Ye Luo taking on the broadcaster role.

After witnessing his brother's strong combat power, Ye Luo also wanted to do something for him, volunteering to become the broadcaster.

"This is the Dawn Army... This is the Dawn Army!"

"Survivors of Huacheng, it's fortunate to communicate with you in this way."

"The Dawn Army is based at the source of the Star River at Kao Mountain Farm, located at Latitude XXX, Longitude XXX... ."

"The Dawn Army was founded with the intention of breaking darkness and allowing the civilized world to see Dawn again, and Commander-in-Chief Ye Fan is willing to assist survivors still struggling in the dark."

"The Dawn Army has a powerful armament, enough to ensure the safety of survivors, and abundant supplies to allow survivors to lead a normal life again."

"As long as survivors can reach the Dawn Army Base, we will accept them."

"The Dawn Army needs precious metals like gold and silver for advanced technology research, and survivors who provide over 500 grams of gold will gain residency rights in the inner city of the Dawn Army."

"Those offering more valuable gold and silver will have the right to prioritize choosing housing construction sites in the inner city... ."

"Our base offers various foods, medicines, clothes, ensuring everyone can eat their fill, receive treatment for illnesses, and survive harsh winters... ."

With Ye Luo's gentle voice repeatedly broadcasting, the name 'Dawn Army' spread among the survivors of Huacheng.

They realized that besides the Survivor Alliance that only knew how to tax, another force existed here.

********

Inside a factory warehouse in Qinghe County.

The warehouse was filled with a moldy smell.

A man stood on the warehouse ladder, holding a telescope through a small warehouse window, watching the distant battleground with flames and warfare.

On the table, a small semiconductor intermittently played the broadcast.

"The ones fighting the zombies now must be the Dawn Army."

The man on the ladder put down the telescope: "It should be; they all have marks on them, and the vehicles too, I saw it clearly."

Everyone around turned their gaze to a middle-aged man.

They were a group of couriers.

When the apocalypse broke out, they relied on their knowledge of the terrain, riding motorcycles to escape here.

They did try seeking help, but to no avail.

Once the Survivor Alliance was established, even three couriers risked their lives to rush out of the warehouse, sacrificing two companions, and one managed to escape to seek help from the Burning Corps.

But they received no assistance.

A few days later, the one who escaped hung a banner from a distant building.

"No supplies, the Burning Corps won't accept us, brothers, take care."

The banner with red paint, red as blood, filled the hearts of these courier brothers with sorrow.

The Survivor Alliance doesn't accept people for free; everyone in safe places has to pay taxes, let alone those trapped in the city.

They would never spend resources to save them.

Then something even more horrifying occurred.

Because of that courier's actions angering the Burning Army, he was shot dead right after hanging the banner.

They saw it all through the telescope.

The couriers were shocked, angry, fearful, but above all, despairing.

Days have become increasingly unbearable, lacking in food and water.

Some were even falling ill, yet there was no medication available.

It seemed their only option was to wait for death here.

Fortunately, a group of people arrived a few days ago, fighting all the way to the riverbank, eliminating a large number of zombies.

Fewer zombies were around now, allowing the couriers to occasionally leave the warehouse to scavenge a bit.

But it was just a drop in the bucket, merely delaying the inevitable.

Since being rejected by the Survivor Alliance, they began to fear these armed men.

But if they didn't seek help, they knew they wouldn't last long, everyone was aware of this.

Now the Dawn Army had arrived, and they weren't asking for food or medicine; they wanted gold and silver.

They had neither gold nor silver, leaving them unsure whether to seek help.

People's gazes fell on the middle-aged man.

The delivery team leader, Sun Daochang.

Sun Daochang was the most experienced courier; there wasn't a place in Qinghe he wasn't familiar with.

Being quite warm-hearted, he had been leading everyone to endure this period of time.

Whether or not to seek the Dawn Army's help was up to Sun Daochang to decide.

Sun Daochang slowly stood up.

"Brothers, I've been observing the actions of the Dawn Army these past days; they really seem to be collecting gold and silver."

"They kill zombies, then gather those jewelry items."

"Their force is very strong, somewhat like a regular army."

Someone chimed in: "Brother Sun, you decide if we should go ask for help; we all follow your lead."

Sun Daochang took a deep breath: "We must go, if not, Old Wang and Little Zhang will fall ill and die, and we won't last much longer either."

"Then we'll go with you."

"No! I don't know if the Dawn Army is as cruel as the Burning Corps; you all stay here for now. If anything happens, it's only me at risk; you'll remain safe."

"Brother Sun! No way!"

"Brother Sun, it's too dangerous!"

Sun Daochang waved his hand: "In this world, apart from death, there's no greater risk, it doesn't matter."

"Moreover, I've had a strange feeling these last couple of days."

"I don't know why, but when I spy on the Dawn Army with the telescope, their leader's strangely contorted face always makes me uneasy, as if he can see something."

The surrounding people felt even more on edge, sensing that the Dawn Army might be somewhat dangerous.

After finishing what he had to say, Brother Sun got up and walked out, pausing slightly in his steps.

"The Dawn Army asks for gold, let me see if they will accept survivors? If they are true to their word, I will show them a promising path."
