Reincarnated as a Lizard

Chapter 43: Human Settlement

Frozen on the spot as she took in the countless powerful humans moving around the mountainous part of the island in front of her, Scaly began to think that it might be better to remain inside the swamp and find a way to hunt down the swamp alligators without being swarmed by them.

Although the swamp alligators would be hard to deal with, it would be far easier to hunt them down compared to trying to hunt for monsters in a place filled to the brim with powerful humans.

Especially considering that there seemed to be an endless stream of new humans travelling down from the spiral staircase piercing the sky above and into the settlement located at the base of the spiral staircase.

Even if some of the humans ended up leaving. Making it easier for her to traverse the mountainous terrain, they would soon be replaced by new humans coming to take their place in hunting down the monsters roaming around the mountainous terrain…

[Rocky Mountain Lion, lvl 21]

Speaking of the monsters in question, Scaly could not help turning her gaze towards one of them that happened to have been fully surrounded by a group of humans on all sides. Leaving it no chance to escape as it could only do its best to desperately fight back against the group of humans to no avail.

Even without knowing much about the situation, it was obvious at first glance that the rocky mountain lion wouldn't be able to hold on for long against the group of humans attacking it from all sides.

The only thing that seemed to give the rocky mountain lion a bit of hope was the fact that its powerful fur allowed it to forcibly resist most of the attacks, though this wouldn't last forever, as the humans were slowly weakening it with each passing second.

I should check out its description before its too late…

Knowing that time was running out for the rocky mountain lion, Scaly decided to check its description. Wondering if it would give her any insight into the humans who had settled down on the mountainous part of the island…

[Description: A larger than normal lion covered in thick fur resembling rocks. Allowing it to easily blend in with the mountainous and rocky terrain that it spends most of its life living in, while at the same time also providing it with a powerful defense hard to pierce through without adequate strength.

The fur of the rocky mountain lion is highly valued in the creation of armor for adventures and luxury products for nobles and wealthy merchants.

For this reason, adventurers often hunt them down whenever they see any of them in the wild or in dungeons. Often establishing small settlements around places where they can be found inside dungeons. Often leading to part of the dungeon turning into a rare safe zone for humans exploring the dungeon and a zone of death for any monster unlucky enough to wander inside it.]

Reading through the rather long description in the hope of obtaining some useful information, Scaly could not help feeling a shiver run down her spine after she finished reading it.

Not only was it by far the longest description of a monster that she had encountered so far, but it also gave her some idea about the reason for the human settlement being there… And just how dangerous it was for someone like her!

R-Roooar!

It was just at this moment that the tragic roar of the rocky mountain lion could be heard, as a human covered in armor from head to toe managed to slash through its thick fur with his sword. Marking the end of the rocky mountain lion.

This… I have to find somewhere else to hunt…

Knowing that it would be far too dangerous for her to continue staying around the human settlement, Scaly directly turned around and made her way back into the swamp behind her before starting to travel along the edge of the swamp. Hoping that there were other places on the island more suitable for her to hunt monsters and increase her strength.

After all, so far, neither the mountainous region nor the swamp was suitable for her.

One was hard to hunt in due to her inability to detect the monsters lurking beneath the water and lacking ability to properly fight them, while the second was filled with countless humans who were… Temporarily a tiny bit stronger than her- Not by much! Only by a tiny margin… A-and! They were also working together. Making it far more difficult to fight them compared to fighting them alone.

Nodding to herself as she thought about this, Scaly continued travelling along the edge of the swamp part of the island bordering the mountainous region dominated by humans. Managing to smoothly avoid encountering any problems due to her muddy cover, making her blend in completely with the environment.

Even if a human happened to look directly at her, they wouldn't notice her unless she made them aware, while the swamp puppies wouldn't bother coming out to play unless she stepped into the water.

In the end, after travelling for what felt like hours, Scaly finally arrived at a forested part of the island without any humans around-

Splash~!

And without wasting any time, she left the swamp and used her water magic to conjure a large ball of water to clean herself. Getting rid of all the mud and other dirty things that had gotten stuck in her scales during her long journey before starting to search for a place to sleep. Intending to recover the energy from her journey before she began to search for monsters to hunt.

Rustle~

Luckily, she didn't have to search for long, as she soon found a small crevice underneath a large tree that she could squeeze inside of. Soon covering the entrance to the best of her ability with a few branches, leaves, and dirt before she drifted off to sleep.

Happily dreaming about all the monsters, she was going to hunt after waking up…
