Nikki's head swiveled between them, confusion written across her face. "Do you mean she has another goal?"
Scath nodded slowly, pulling herself into a sitting position. "Summoning a Beast Spirit like Fenrir wouldn't help with the Medical Field. It would probably make it worse, and it would be better to summon another Beast Spirit than it."
Roana struggled upright while nodding. "That's true. Even if it could unlock the secrets to other dimensions, the summoning of Fenrir would lead to mass death. The people you've taken care of would be killed as well."
All eyes turned to Martha, who still had her spear at Reinhard's throat, but her grip had loosened.
Martha's light blue eyes drifted past them, past Phineas with his black suit and gold chain, toward the distant platform where Anasha stood waiting. The silence stretched for a couple of seconds with everyone staring at Martha.
"You are sharp as ever, Scath." Martha said softly before sighing. "You're right. I am not doing this for the medical field or even for any of the goals I revealed to you all."
She lowered the spear slowly, the point dropping away from Reinhard's throat.
"The reason I am going this far..." Martha's light blue eyes remained fixed on Anasha's distance. "The reason I am willing to break my morals and throw away my conscience to do this..."
Martha turned to face them fully and allow them to see it now. The exhaustion on her face, the determination shining in her light blue eyes, and the way she clenched her free hand.
Martha then says softly. "Is to meet my little sister."
Reinhard blinked before his eyes widened as he recalled that Martha had mentioned she had a sister before.
But then he furrowed his brows as he thought about Martha's words, and then the Beast Spirit she wished to summon.
Reinhard says out loud. "Wait… Are you saying she isn't on Paradise?"
Martha nodded with a sigh, and a look of pain flashed on her face before it quickly faded away.
"She is in a different space, dimension, or somewhere else." Martha's hands moved as she spoke, one gesturing vaguely outward. "I am honestly not sure, but it isn't in Paradise. Only I have been able to communicate and see her because of our connection, but no one else..." Her fingers curled inward, pressing against her chest above her heart. "My little sister is all alone, surviving by herself in that place with her only companion being me for those few hours we can speak in the day."
The words fell like stones into water.
Joseph's expression shifted as a hint of pain, understanding, and regret flashed on his face. Marie's trembling as she furrowed her brows, Scath grip on her spear tightened, Roana's golden eyes widened in shock, Gran blinked, and Nikki gasped in shock.
Marie furrowed her brows as she said. "H-How are you sure she isn't on Paradise? What if you-"
"If I try to find her magical signature?" Martha interjected with a raised brow. "I already tried with the Synth Recorder, and no matter where I go, there is no picking up."
She shifted her weight, finally stepping off Reinhard's chest, who furrowed his brows.
He knew the Synth Recorder could help track the magical signature of a person's unique magic. The range itself is as wide as a city, so it was a very impressive Mythic Key.
Martha's boots echo against the stone as she moved a few paces away, her spear hanging loose in one hand, its point dragging slightly against the floor with a scraping sound that echoed off the pillars.
Roana leaned forward. "What if you asked-"
Martha's head shook before Roana could finish. "I already asked the Mori Empire and Memento Mori, even doing deals and missions for them to get their help..." Her shoulders hunched slightly inward, the spear's weight suddenly seeming heavier in her grip. "And yet they couldn't help me, which led me to simply leave."
A half-laugh sound escaped Martha's throat with the corners of her mouth twisted upward in a smile that held no warmth, only the bitter edge of accumulated failures. Her free hand rose to touch her face, fingers pressing against her temple as if to hold back a headache or perhaps memories.
"I have tried many methods and met failure on all of them." Her hand fell away from her face, hanging at her side where it clenched and unclenched repeatedly. "I have traveled the entire world except for some spots, and I still couldn't find my little sister and understand that she isn't on the planet."
Martha turned away from them, facing Anasha on the platform. "And that means she is in another dimension. But the thing is, how could I reach that other dimension?" Her voice rose slightly, frustration bleeding through her tone. "There is no Phantasm Beast with that skill..."
Martha paused before her head tilted, and her light blue eyes stared up into the shadows of the fifty-foot ceiling. "But I did learn there are Beast Spirits and the best one is Fenrir, the Dimension Devourer." Her hand tightened on the spear shaft. "If I can find someone who wields it, then maybe..."
Scath sighed as she said. "But you couldn't find them? Or anyone with a Beast Spirit like that?"
"No." Martha's shoulders sagged, her head bowed with her hair acting as curtains for her face, and the spear point lowered until it touched the floor. "I couldn't, and when I realized that, I almost drowned in despair."
The chamber was silent for a couple of seconds, and Martha spoke softly. "But the Mehko group revealed their plans to me, and then I was filled with hope."
Nikki's trembling intensified as she said. "But you know the cost of this..." Her voice cracked, breaking on the words. "It's the lives of a hundred thousand people. Miss Martha, I know you are a kind person, how could you be alright-"
Martha's head swiftly turned to them, her light blue eyes shined with intensity that made several of them flinch back. "I am not a kind person." Each word came out with her gritting her teeth and stepping forward. "I am simply an older sister who wants to rescue her little sister and is willing to do anything to do it."
Martha's free hand pressed against her chest again. "Even if it means throwing away her original dream and wishes for that."
Reinhard and the others fell silent as they stared at Martha, who was no longer a doctor of the clinic.
But a sister willing to burn the world to find her sister.
