Chapter 43: The Beast King Invaded the Starting Town

Many players, who were courageously fighting against dozens of avian humanoid beasts, were also trapped by the sucking sand. Buildings within the town began to sink slowly. The avian humanoid beast king screamed loudly and flapped its wings, trying to lift itself out of the deadly quicksand in hope of escaping.

The sounds of players and avian humanoid beasts, unable to escape the quicksand, filled the town. As large structures continued to sink, the sand erupted, sucking everything down faster. Smaller players and avian humanoid beasts were not sucked in as much and desperately cried out for help from other players.

Some players, who had made many enemies, found themselves regretting later as no one was willing to help them due to their past misdeeds with other players. However, many were saved, except for those deep in the center of the quicksand, including the avian humanoid beast king, which was furiously flapping its wings trying to pull its body, now sunk to the knees, out of the sand.

"My God! Can the Eyes be used like this?"

Chang Long watched the quicksand pit, created by the shattered Eye of Earth, in astonishment.

'Let's get out of here before we fall into the quicksand,'

Davy-chan cautioned Chang Long, prompting her and Kitsune to quickly move away from the quicksand area.

"This saves us trouble. Davy-chan, you may leave now,"

Chang Long dismissed Davy-chan immediately after they got away from the quicksand that had consumed half the town.

"Those people are to be pitied, Master,"

Kitsune, standing beside Chang Long, commented with sympathy. Many players were sinking along with buildings and the avian humanoid beast king and some of its minions. Other players trapped in sinking buildings hurriedly climbed out the windows and jumped to nearby buildings to escape the quicksand.

"Do you want to go in and help?"

Chang Long asked, interpreting Kitsune's look.

"Yes, Master, because somehow this quicksand pit was caused by..."

"Stop! Kitsune, remember this, the avian humanoid beast king invading the town and this quicksand pit have nothing to do with us at all. Understand? If you ever mention this, we are both doomed!"

Chang Long urgently warned Kitsune, knowing the implications if the whole situation was traced back to them.

"Huh!?"

Kitsune looked at Chang Long, confused, seeing his master fully responsible, even if unintentionally.

"Still want to argue? If you don't understand, you're not eating steak for a whole month,"

Chang Long said coldly. Fearing his favorite food would be withheld, Kitsune quickly agreed and went on to help players escaping from various buildings sinking into the quicksand.

The avian humanoid beast king called the remaining less than 20 of its minions to help pull its body out of the quicksand. Initially, Chang Long watched, thinking their efforts futile, but was shocked to see the beast slowly pulling itself out. When it saw that this method seemed to work, the king urged its minions to pull harder. Once it was free, despite being exhausted from the effort, it flew unsteadily, looking for its enemies - the players.

The avian humanoid beast king opened its mouth wide and spat out hundreds of wind-shaped spears about 30 cm in size. Chang Long, who saw the entire action, managed to dodge narrowly, but other players, still escaping the quicksand, were hit directly, resulting in many being forced to respawn.

Upon seeing Chang Long's form, the extinguished rage within the avian humanoid beast king flared up once more. With a single flap of its wings, it nearly grasped Chang Long, but she was quick enough to dodge and escaped just in time.

"What the heck, why is it chasing me!"

Chang Long shouted while leaping across buildings, trying to escape from the pursuit of the avian humanoid beast king, but it persistently followed her, fueled by a seemingly deep-seated vengeance.

Chang Long fled for her life until she was outside the town, finding herself in a familiar yet vast grassy field, eventually realizing she had entered the Thousand Serpents Fields, where she had once gotten lost and ended up on the other side of the town, encountering the Goddess Veritas in a sacred pond atop Doi Buppha.

Once out of Kitsune's sight, Chang Long's true form was revealed. Fortunately, there were no other players around (presumably eaten by vipers), and she once again faced the avian humanoid beast king. This time, she had to use all her skills to survive.

The avian humanoid beast king opened its mouth, preparing to unleash its skill again. Chang Long watched intently, running as fast as she could to escape the skill's wide attack range due to the beast's enormous size.

Boom!

Explosions followed closely behind Chang Long, but she dared not look back. Once sure she was out of the attack range, she quickly called Davy-chan to possess her again but was caught off-guard by the deadly palm strike of the avian humanoid beast king flying close to the ground, sending her tumbling far.

"Ugh!"

Chang Long hit the ground hard, coughing up a significant amount of blood. Luckily, her God of Death outfit had strong protection, or she would have certainly been forced to respawn. She glanced up at the glaring avian humanoid beast king, a faint black aura slowly emanating from her body. Shakingly, she stood up, wiping the blood from her lips.

"Davy-chan, Spirit Possession."

Chang Long called Davy-chan into her body with a calm voice. Once Davy-chan's spirit entered, the black aura intensified and rapidly spread from Chang Long's body, chilling the atmosphere slowly enough for the enemy to notice.

The avian humanoid beast king ignored Chang Long's transformation, swinging its palm down, intending to flatten her, but screamed in pain when the Sovereign Sword pierced through its palm.

Chang Long ignored its wailing. She yanked the sword out fiercely and flicked it upwards, severing two of the beast's sharp taloned fingers, leaving them hanging by a thread with only two fingers intact. Bright red blood gushed from the wound like a breached dam. The avian humanoid beast king howled loudly, audible to all surviving players in the starting town.

"You came looking for trouble! I was minding my own business, and you dared to hurt me. You'll suffer ten folds!"

Chang Long roared defiantly at the avian humanoid beast king glaring at her with resentment. With the Reaper's Aura fully assembled, a skeletal reaper in a tattered cloak holding a sharp scythe materialized behind her, doubling her attack power.

The avian humanoid beast king seemed to tremble slightly at the sight of the reaper behind Chang Long but refused to let the enemy who had caused it so much pain escape. It opened its mouth, preparing to use its skill again, but this time, Chang Long did not wait. She jumped towards the beast's mouth, using one of its hands as a stepping stone. With Mystic Gust skill aiding her ascent, she lunged, sword raised, and slashed at the beast's right eye, causing blood to spurt out.

The avian humanoid beast king shrieked in shock. Using its uninjured hand, it tried to grab its injured eye, hoping to catch its enemy. Chang Long maneuvered herself onto its shoulder and aligned the Eye of Fire parallel to the ground.

"Flaming Burst!"

Chang Long invoked the most powerful skill of the Eye of Fire, from which golden flames burst forth, scorching some of the feathers on the avian humanoid beast king and igniting the grass on the ground. The constant wind in the Thousand Serpents Fields fanned the flames, causing them to spread rapidly.

The avian humanoid beast king, about to be roasted alive, hurriedly flapped its wings to ascend. But Chang Long, anticipating this, plunged her sword into one of its feet that was pressing down on a large rock, pinning it with ease due to her high level enhanced by Davy-chan's possession.

Claaccckk!!

Screaming in pain, the beast tried to free its foot, trapped against the rock, with both pain and fury. As the fire engulfed its skin, causing it to blister, it made another attempt to fly because of the intense burning. The smell of burning flesh spread throughout the area. After stabbing it, Chang Long quickly retreated to a safe distance, looking on with satisfaction.

At the town's western gate, players who had survived the avian humanoid beast's attack and the quicksand that consumed nearly half of the starting town gathered to see who could make the avian humanoid beast king scream so terrifyingly often. What they saw was the Thousand Serpents Fields engulfed in violent flames, with the avian humanoid beast king trying to escape from the blaze but seemingly caught by something, unable to fly away. Snakes fled the fire toward the gate, while those too close to the blaze were consumed by the flames.

Instead of watching the fight between the avian humanoid beast king and its opponent, who was nowhere to be seen, the players had to deal with the numerous fleeing snakes. Kitsune, seeing the golden flames, immediately knew it was Chang Long's doing and leapt into the fiery field.

"Hey, everyone, that's the player who can consume souls, right? Could it be him who cornered the avian humanoid beast king like this?"

One player shouted to his friends upon seeing Kitsune in his black outfit and a mask disappear into the burning field. Those who witnessed Kitsune's action were all in awe before turning to deal with the snakes.

"Flaming Burst!"

As Chang Long looked towards the town gate and saw many players gathered, she feared being seen and quickly used her skill again after swallowing five mana crystals. Instead of the flames spurting out as before, they shot upwards into the sky because the Eye of Fire, attached to the Monarch's sword embedded in the beast's foot, caused the golden flames to burst through the wound instead.

The avian humanoid beast king was shocked as the golden flames narrowly missed its face by half a foot, causing it to lose balance and fall into the fiery field. Its agonizing screams echoed far and wide, causing many players to cover their ears. Its body was rapidly consumed by fire, filling the air with the stench of burnt flesh as it refused to succumb to death.

"Fire Fortress!"

Chang Long grew anxious as the external flames began to die down, and the players seemed about to approach for a closer look after they ridden the snakes. She extended her hands, parting the flames to create a path to the Sovereign Sword, still stuck in the beast's foot.

Chang Long dashed towards the sword with great speed, and upon reaching it to pull it out, found it was not hot to the touch. It took her some effort to extract the sword, then used the Fire Fortress skill to clear a path through the flames towards the charred body of the avian humanoid beast king, now too weakened to struggle.

Shunk!

With a swift strike, the Sovereign Sword pierced deeply into the chest of the avian humanoid beast king, eliciting barely a sound from its mouth before it died, transforming into a beam of light that shot across the Thousand Serpents Fields. After the system announced the death of the avian humanoid beast king, Chang Long quickly collected what valuable items she could into her bag and swiftly departed.

Mage players collaborated using water magic to extinguish the intense golden flames, eager to inspect the remains of the avian humanoid beast king and identify the individual who had slain it. However, it took nearly two hours for the golden flames to subside, and they constantly had to sprinkle water on the ground to prevent the fire from reigniting. Eventually, they gathered around the charred carcass of the avian humanoid beast king, while some players scavenged for items scattered on the ground, especially merchant players who were keen to capitalize on the opportunity.

Members of the Pendragon Guild facilitated and assisted other players injured by the avian humanoid beasts and those trapped by the quicksand tirelessly as the local guild. Subsequently, the system awarded the Pendragon Guild for their efforts.

"Who could easily slay a level 80 avian humanoid beast king like this?"

Peach Blossom emerged to view Chang Long's handiwork alongside Draco and some guild members.

"I don't know, but there's a rumor among players that the person is also a soul eater,"

Draco replied, his gaze fixed on the charred remains of the avian humanoid beast king.

"With both the quicksand pit and this golden sea of flames, it's hard to believe they were done by the same person,"

Peach Blossom shook her head at the sight before her, scanning the area for any clues to the slayer of the avian humanoid beast king but only saw players collecting scattered items and journalist players enthusiastically taking photos.

"Other major guilds will surely be on the lookout for this player,"

Draco commented.

"How do you know? They might already belong to a guild,"

Peach Blossom countered.
