Chapter 38: Kitsune's Worry (Side Story)

While Chang Long was resting in the Pendragon Guild after completing the Guardian Spirit mission, Kitsune was allowed to explore the town. Transforming into a human, he went looking for a clothing store where his master had previously bought nobleman's autumn outfits.

"Found it!"

Kitsune whispered to himself with joy upon finding the shop he was looking for. The young fox stood uncertainly in front of the shop for a moment. Since hatching from his egg, he had never been alone for such a long time, and he did not really have the courage to face humans other than Chang Long. In fact, he found humans other than his master quite annoying. However, today he had to complete a mission, even if it meant going against his own desires.

"Welcome back, oh it's you!"

Kungten, the clothing store clerk, greeted cheerfully upon recognizing the handsome young man who had previously shopped there with his brother. She hurriedly came over to serve him.

"Uh...hello, I have a favor to ask,"

Kitsune said nervously. Despite trying to emulate Chang Long's distant and cool demeanor, which did not work out. Facing a young woman other than Chang Long one-on-one for the first time made his heart beats wildly, fearing he would reveal his childlike innocence.

"Of course! What can I help you with?"

The clerk asked eagerly.

"Ahem!... I would like this outfit to be repaired,"

Kitsune pointed to the outfit he was wearing. He tried to maintain eye contact while speaking, but the clerk's sparkling eyes made it hard to keep looking, so the young fox diverted his gaze to his own outfit instead.

"Sure, just take it off and hand it over,"

the clerk said with a smile, walking over to fetch a service form from the counter. Kitsune was stunned for a moment before reluctantly beginning to undress, not having realized that undressing was part of the repair process.

"Yikes! What are you doing, customer?"

The clerk turned around to find Kitsune undressing in the middle of the store, shocked to the point of almost fainting. She quickly raised her hands to cover her face, blushing, though she could not help peeking through her fingers at Kitsune's pale chest.

"But you told me to take it off,"

Kitsune looked at the clerk, annoyed. She had asked him to undress, so why was she making a fuss? He should be the one feeling displeased.

"Um...yes, but I thought you'd go to the changing room to do that!"

The clerk replied, her face flushed. She lowered her hands when she saw Kitsune had put his shirt back on.

"...Sorry, but where is the changing room?"

Kitsune asked, face turning slightly red, realizing his mistake. This was a result of his lack of common knowledge just as Davy-chan had mentioned!

"Over there! But do you have a change of clothes?"

The clerk pointed towards the changing room and could not help asking another important question, seeing how inexperienced the person in front of her was.

".............."

"You don't, do you?"

The clerk easily guessed from Kitsune's stunned silence. She went to the rental department and picked out a simple outfit for the young fox to change into.

"Thank...Thank you!"

Kitsune accepted the outfit shyly and headed to the changing room. The clerk covered her mouth, laughing quietly at Kitsune's attempt to act tough, which was completely contradicted by his blushing cheeks.

When Kitsune came out with the outfit to be repaired, the clerk immediately wrote up a bill and gave it to him, leaving the young fox speechless again.

"What's this?!"

"The initial repair fee plus the rental for the outfit you're wearing, of course."

"What? A fee!"

Kitsune had no money on him. Usually accompanying his master, he never had to deal with financial transactions. Moreover, Kitsune was reluctant to tell Chang Long about damaging the expensive outfit she had just given him. Claiming to go out for a stroll was an excuse; strolling did not require money, so he did not bring any.

"...I...don't have any money!"

Kitsune admitted softly, looking extremely distressed.

"No money? But you bought such an expensive outfit before, how could you not have a mere fifty thousand coins for repair and rental fees!?"

The clerk looked at Kitsune in surprise. The fox's anxious demeanor and bitten lips were quite appealing.

"I really don't have any money!"

Kitsune insisted, looking like he wanted to cry, his previously cool and distant facade completely gone.

"If you don't have money, we really can't repair the outfit for you!"

The clerk said indifferently, thinking to herself that this innocent young man must have stepped out of a fairy tale.

"No, please! I'll do anything, just please repair this outfit. I don't want my master to be sad to know that the outfit she just bought is torn,"

Kitsune pleaded with a face too adorable to resist, his manner of pleading bullied young boy was so pitiful that it melted the clerk's heart completely.

"Ahem! Would you really do anything?"

The clerk asked slyly. Kitsune bit his thumb fiercely before finally nodding in agreement.

At the starting town's official clothing store, the proficient clerk, Kungten, stood smiling so wide her cheeks almost burst. She hurriedly processed the credit cards of customers buying clothes. The store was suddenly especially popular among the female players because of the highly attractive mannequin displayed in front of the store.

Kungten's brilliant idea was for Kitsune to stand as a storefront clothing mannequin. But she did not just have him stand lifelessly; she instructed the young fox to change poses periodically. He had to glance around, wink, wave, and stroke his chin in thought. Resulted in droves of enchanted female players coming into the store to ask Kungten, the clerk, about the mannequin. Some of them were even willing to buy him at a high price.

"Hey, I've bought several outfits from your store already. Can you tell me where you got that handsome mannequin?"

A female player whispered to Kungten, intrigued by the mannequin that was charmingly mature yet possessed an adorable youthful allure, her heart fluttering as those sharp, beautiful eyes swept over her.

"Just a moment, please. The store is still full of customers,"

Kungten deflected, quickly swiping another customer's credit card.

Meanwhile, Kitsune, standing at the storefront, was no less surrounded by female players who would simultaneously scream whenever he struck a pose. Some even dared to touch him, but Kitsune, with high patience, tolerated it despite feeling both embarrassed and angry, his tail puffing up. All this, just so the store would agree to repair his outfit.

'Oh man... what is this? Can you not crowd around me like this!'

Kitsune complained internally without letting his annoyance show on his face, continuing to act the part of a mannequin smoothly.

'Arghh, crazy woman, don't touch me with your dirty hands!'

Kitsune raged internally when a female player curiously touched him.

'Why are you screaming? My ears are about to burst!'

And

'Sob...crazy woman, why are you kissing my cheek? Utterly shameless!!'

And

'When will this be over? I don't want to be a mannequin anymore!'

And

'Master, please help me, wail'

...and many more thoughts swirled through Kitsune's mind...

After complaining, crying, and ranting to his heart's content internally, Kungten finally put up a "Temporarily Closed" sign on the store. Kitsune rushed into the now customer-free store, startling the crowd of female players who had been ogling him. Kungten hurriedly closed and locked the door to prevent the female players from following inside.

"I've kept my end of the bargain; now you have to repair this outfit for me!"

Kitsune declared sternly, meaning business. If she refused to repair it or forced him to do something strange like that again, he would not hesitate to burn down the store.

"Calm down, I will keep my promise. But where exactly is the outfit damaged? I don't see anything wrong with it,"

Kungten asked, puzzled, inspecting the outfit Kitsune handed over for repair but finding no visible damage.

"It's the sleeve, look. It got torn by a goblin's weapon!"

Kitsune pointed angrily at the sleeve, starting to doubt whether this clerk could actually repair clothes at all.

"There's nothing there. Both sleeves look perfectly fine to me,"

Kungten responded, bringing the outfit closer for Kitsune to inspect.

"Right here, look! There's a hole, and there's a thread hanging loose. Are you blind or what? It's so obvious!!"

Kitsune pointed to the left sleeve, incredulous at the clerk's apparent blindness to the glaringly obvious tear, thinking her to be utterly incompetent.

"A hole?"

Kungten looked where the young fox pointed and was nearly floored by the term 'hole' as it was such a tiny tear that a sewing needle could easily fit through without any issue.

"See? You see it now, right!"

Kitsune asked, even more irritated when the clerk remained silent.

"Just a moment, please..."

Kungten checked the outfit's status and found it to be perfectly normal without any indication of damage.

Kitsune, in his flame fox form, sat dejectedly in front of the Pendragon Guild, too ashamed to face Chang Long, his beloved and respected master, even though she was unaware of his whereabouts all day. He felt deeply embarrassed for displaying his foolishness publicly, tarnishing his reputation and potentially his master's (how exactly?).

'I'm such an idiot to have stood there as a mannequin for those women to grope until I'm worn out like this!'

Kitsune scolded himself internally, feeling depressed.

'And to top it off, I had to strike all those ridiculous poses that the clerk told me to. I really feel like jumping off a cliff to wash away my shame!'

Since the outfit meant for repair was not damaged, Kitsune ended up receiving compensation after the deduction for the costume rental (worn for just two minutes). It was truly not worth it at all, having to stand as a mannequin for those women to scream over all day, in addition to being fondled. The more it thought about it, the deeper Kitsune sank into despair.

"Ah! Aren't you Chang Long's three-tailed fox? What are you doing, sitting here?"

A male player, who was a member of the Pendragon Guild, approached Kitsune, who was sitting dejectedly in front of the guild. Kitsune brushed him off, having no mood to play with anyone.

"Right! Chang Long was looking for you, fox. She said she wanted to take you out for a walk,"

the player recalled and told Kitsune.

'Alas! How can I face my master like this, I was such a fool!'

Kitsune felt even more downcast upon hearing Chang Long's name, wondering how to prevent this grand blunder in his life from spreading. If his revered and beloved master knew... No, even if she knew, it would not matter. But if Davy-chan found out, for sure, he would be teased endlessly!

"Kitsune, there you are. Come on, let's go for a walk,"

Chang Long approached, gently petting Kitsune's head. Kitsune looked up at Chang Long with teary eyes, feeling profoundly grateful. She really was the best.

"Come on, hurry up. I'll take you to eat something delicious too, recommended by Oliang and Wet Trash Can,"

Chang Long led the way. When she saw Kitsune did not follow, she turned back to call again.

'Right, what's the use of worrying? Even my master isn't bothered (well, she doesn't know anything about it).'

The young fox, incredibly adept at consoling himself, quickly got up and happily ran after Chang Long. Even the male player who had greeted him was surprised.

"What a strange fox, so down for a one moment and suddenly so lively!"

The player watched Kitsune joyfully running alongside Chang Long, perplexed, before heading back into the guild.
