After reaching home, the first thing that I did was clean it.
If I hadn't met Lisa and Silva, it would have taken about an hour more to reach back home, and that was kind of what I had calculated before. Reaching home at that time, I would have simply done a portion of the cleaning until Mom came home and helped me do the rest.
But now that I am already here, I can do it all by myself. I smiled as I began cleaning the house once again. It would remove the pressure on Mom, and can just choose to relax instead of going into work mode as soon as she comes home.
Though I said cleaning, I was mostly rearranging things, setting up the kitchen cabinets, rinsing a few plates, sorting out the leftover things in the living room and lastly, arranging the dirty clothes near the bathroom so that I can take it to the laundry tomorrow. Other than these, most of the work was already done a few days ago at my birthday, when Daniel and Marie came.
I could have done it all in the afternoon, but because I still needed to look into the question banks to see the current curriculum, and the set of questions asked in the exams, I was busy studying at that time. They weren't hard, but it was still something that I had to do, regression or not. To say, 'If only I had checked it once, I could have known it' kind of thing later on wasn't something I had liked. In fact, I hated it.
It won't be a funny sight if I miss a few exam questions because I was too lazy to open a few pages of the book.
As I cleaned the room, I noticed a few things that I needed to buy. Perhaps here or perhaps in a new apartment, if our financial situation allows us to move fast.
A Washing Machine. A bigger refrigerator. An air conditioner. Some decorations, perhaps something to make things more presentable at home. We can have some flowerpots for the balcony, too. I calculated as I looked at all the things I could count while cleaning.
Within 50 minutes of my arrival at home, I had completed my task of cleaning the entire house, making me give a big thumbs up to myself.
"New skill: Cleaning Unlocked!" I gave myself a reward before moving to my room and then taking the laptop and the hardware out of it. Then I did a quick scan of all the items I had on the table.
Flipping the laptop, I used the screwdriver to open it up. And then, using the hardware that I had bought today, I neatly placed it into the laptop one by one, in its designated locations. Those that cannot be placed directly into it were connected by a port through some rough wiring. It took about 30 minutes before I was finally done.
Not the best one, but it should work until I have a proper laptop of my own. I thought as I looked at the makeshift laptop that was ready to be used.
As I connected it to the electric cable and started it, I first found that the Operating System it used was very old. In fact, it was so old that something like this would be considered ancient even in today's age.
On the other hand, it also means that it can be easily reformed. A smile appeared on my face as I opened up the command prompt and began typing a few sets of key commands to change the interface into code form. And then as I analyzed it slowly, one by one, I began to understand the keyframes of the code.
Finally, one command at a time, I began modifying it according to my own needs. A strenuous and time consuming process, I must say.
While it was tedious and boring, it wasn't that hard. I had done it before. I have done it many times. So, doing something like this has become second nature to me, allowing me to process rapidly at the same time I was rearranging, creating and breaking things.
About 90 minutes later, 30 minutes more than what I had expected, I was done with the crude structure of the OS that I wanted. It was working properly enough to let me get what I wanted, making me turn serious a bit. This was because it was about time to search for the people that Charles had asked me to save.
Using my phone to connect the laptop to the network, I began looking into the government's security system. I had to keep in mind not to let anyone find my source, and if possible, try to make it as unnoticeable as possible as well. Working through the codes, I hacked into the government's servers first.
The easy part is done. I then hurried faster into the system.
Hacking into it was easy, but to take out the list, filter the name, send it to myself, rearrange the files as if they were never touched and erase my steps were hard. You have to be fast. You have to be discreet. You have to be careful. You have to limit your greed. And most importantly, you cannot touch anything sensitive no matter how curious it makes you.
Even after doing my best, I took 37 seconds to finish the work. That was too, after I had planned about a dozen commands for each step, making sure not to miss anything in there. Plus, with the added fact that I knew the government systems from the 100s of attempts I had done in my past life.
It was still easier compared to the future when the tech had evolved so much. I pondered as I thought about ways to use this knowledge to my advantage. After all, tech was improving at a rapid rate, about 10 times faster each year during this time.
But this also meant that things were 100 times slower and easier than the time I was used to.
Looking at the file that I had just downloaded, I sighed as I calmed my beating heart, before preparing myself and opening up the folder.
Evan Castro (121 Files)
Serah Rose(510 Files)
Damian White(1310 Files)
Ciana Grace and(311 Files)
Charles Richard(79 Files)
There sure are a lot of people with similar names.
This was a lot to go on. There were over 2000 people, and that too within the same country. We are not even talking about the people staying international right now.
What's worse is I have no idea which one of them was the person that Charles was talking about. I contemplated before deciding not to worry about the things I cannot do. So instead, I focused on these people, deciding to check them one by one.
It may take years to finish doing this work, but it would be much better than just sitting and doing nothing.
I might get lucky if I were to keep looking, but the chances are zero if I just leave it all to fate and ignore it completely. I sighed as it didn't sit well with me not to help Charles after he had given me a whole new life to live up to… like literally.
So, for starters, I looked into the local area, wondering if I could find someone who was within this region, within this town, or neighbouring ones.
3 of them, huh?
A Ciana Grace, who lived about 12 kilometers from here in the neighbouring town.
A Damian White who studied in middle school about 2 kilometers from here.
And lastly, an Evan Castro who worked in a cafe about a kilometer away from here.
Let's start with them. We can do it slowly, with 3 at a time, and expand our search area with time.
"Mikael!" As I was almost done with my research. Mom called me out. Walking out of the room, I found her standing near the kitchen as she put 3 bags on the table before turning to me.
"Prepare the dinner table. I am really hungry, so I am gonna cook an easy meal tonight."
I should discuss the recommendation letter with Mom at dinner. I thought as I moved to set up the dinner table as instructed.
