Chapter 69: Checking up on the townspeople

Upon getting to the next town and at least for now the whole marriage question could be put out of his mind, Kurt decided it was time to really test his new sword. And had decided to go find Hank, Tom and Joe. Kurt really needed to let some steam out so if there was anything that needed clearing out, he wanted to volunteer for the job. There was usually something coming and going, nothing that was much of a threat to the whole, but shouldn't be left alone and get out of control.

"Well we can go boar hunting," suggested Tom.

"Not really a sword thing," said Hank.

"There is that pack of hi ra ki, hiding somewhere," said Joe, "we could go looking for it."

"So there is really nothing the whole place is at peace, lame," said Kurt.

"Well the river is really not a river yet, dries up quickly down the line still, so it will get worse eventually and require more maintenance," said Joe, "most of the animals are small and quick, more predators will come eventually."

"But we'll have another brood by then as well," said Tom.

"What about that spider hole?"

"I mean they aren't really doing anything, and really throw a couple fireballs down it and it's mostly cleared, webs burn," said Joe.

Apparently when Kurt actually wanted to fight some terrible monster, that's exactly when it was impossible. But when he wanted to have a nice day, bam something came. Nothing goes the way you want it. So the whole idea was really a bust. He could just go out and run around but with a target that's probably all he'd end up doing.

Excusing himself, he met up with Jerry, he hadn't really talked to him in a while. He hadn't seen what had become of the stables either. When he got there he found Jerry, Steve and Tyler all there. When they noticed Steve and Tyler took a bow, "My Lord"

Jerry had not bowed and gave a weird look, "am I supposed to do that now?," he looked around, "That wasn't always a thing."

"I actually think you are, unfortunately," said Kurt, "and probably with Sara too. Obviously Layla."

"Ohh," Jerry said, taking a bow, "sorry, my lord."

"It does seem a little silly doesn't it?"

"A fair bit, but everything around here is a bit strange, a little bowing never hurt anyone though, I'm just a driver, if they want me to stand and wave or bow it's not really enough of an issue for me to argue."

"I'm a bit new to it."

"We were told—," said Tyler.

"No, no it's fine, you were right, I had a bit of a 'talking to' about acting more as the Lord I apparently am recently. And I think this is a part of that, I just got to get used to it. But you can be at ease, I'm here to just have a friendly conversation."

"Things seemed to have gotten complicated, another pretty lady I saw you with again sir," said Jerry.

"And what a lady," said Steve. Which Kurt made an instinctive glare about.

"It's complicated," said Kurt.

"Always is, with all of them around at once," said Jerry, almost laughing. "You should probably stick to one at a time, that was my secret."

"Come on now you know, it's not like that."

"Do I?"

"Ohh my Harem? A Fae that can't fuck, a girl that's practically my older sister and of course, I remember," Kurt put a finger to his temple, then pointing at Jerry, "your wife! And don't you dare count Carla in this, I your Lord will consider that an actual crime, I'll find a prison, I'll make the gnomes build one, just for you, right next to Carla's bathroom, and I have no idea what horrors that will reveal. And I'm getting this for finding a sexy little Countess," Kurt said waving his arms, "whose clan is trying to take advantage of me, apparently."

Jerry was clutching his stomach laughing at that, like he couldn't stop, "okay, okay, enough. I swear, I'll stop. I give up. I give up." Even Steve and Tyler were laughing, but trying to hold it back.

The four of them had made some small talk after that break. Jerry did tell Kurt about how the horses were technically his, and that they would swap out from gates along the way, and if any went lame they had enough. Finally Kurt turned some attention to Steve and Tyler.

"So is everything going well? I know this all must be a lot to take in, and to get up and move on like you did."

"It did take some getting used to," said Steve.

"Yeah, the goblins are surprisingly friendly, unlike they can appear," said Tyler.

"So you don't regret any of it?"

"No not really, my life is pretty good here," said Steve, "at least so far."

"Same, but there will be more complications even if I can see that. Always have a full stomach, that's a blessing in itself really.."

"Complications?" said Kurt

"There is no way the carriage isn't going to be a target, sir, if it's not already. Which means we have to be ready, ready like actually and realistically, always expecting an attack, and that is, tough getting stop by some bandits on the road is different than anything really organized. And this side seems to be growing at a fast rate, which will bring its own problems. It was smart to hire full time guards, but we two are not going to be enough eventually I'm afraid, we might not be enough now," said Tyler.

"Yeah, we agree, we have plans," Kurt said scratching his head, plans in theory, "if you have any recommendations for anyone, we'd be happy to hear it. It might end up a little easier to recruit, our secret isn't as secret as we planned unfortunately, we, as in myself and Layla got caught ourselves, kind of a bad look for us really. You two can drink some of the water in the throne room, I wouldn't mind that, that will give you the tentacles like Sara, anyone else sagas differently tell me, that should make you both feel a lot better. It will take some practice. But I wouldn't want my guards to be vulnerable to those attacks."

"Good to know, maybe when we get to Lake Longbow I can recruit a party that sometimes is out there."

Kurt had also made a visit to see Carla, catching her up on what was happening, she told him that she and Susan had been regularly meeting. That was nice to know as well. Everything appeared to be going smoothly. She told him her next brood should be coming along in a few months.

So it seemed the last stop should be the eleven settlement, thought Kurt, he hadn't really planned on doing a round of everyone but, why not right? He was still curious about eleven magic anyway. Maybe this time he could find someone to tell him a little about that. He had been able to do something with human knowledge and goblin magic, why couldn't the same work here as well. This time there was no big gathering but an unfamiliar elf had greeted him.

"Lord Kurt, we were not expecting you, should I get the chief?" Kurt was going to have to get used to sometimes being made a big deal about apparently, even inside his own realm.

"No, I was actually hoping to learn more about the elves and you people. Do you have a record keeper, or someone that deals with magic? I have some questions about my sword in particular, and was hoping to ask the smith about it, I was told that would be possible. I am a little unfamiliar with all of your customs, and positions."

"You are of course very welcome Sir Kurt," said the elf. "The spellsmith hmm, I think he could be bothered for a visit. If you'd follow me."
