After agreeing to take the team into Portland to do some scavenging, Hazel didn't waste any time and quickly gathered some players to join her hunt for supplies. Aside from Astrid, she also gathered players like Chegyaeyi, John, and even Kane, since they were the strongest Vanguard and Rearguard players aside from Zoe and Anais. She then gathered around five more random players to aid in their scavenging.
As for what the group was searching for, they were mainly gathering materials like food, water, and most importantly, medical supplies. While they could collect food and water from grocery stores and the like, they would need to search through a hospital to obtain any medical supplies.
In terms of what supplies they planned to search for first, Hazel figured that going to the hospital was the best option for them. They technically didn't need any medical supplies since they possessed healing potions and spells that could heal wounds, but there could come a time when neither option was available, and items like gauze and bandages were the only thing available to them.
Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it, as the old saying goes, anyway. In this case, it would be best for Hazel and everyone else if they had everything at their disposal, even if they possessed better options. After all, you never know what could happen.
After gathering her members, Hazel and her group soon took one of the cargo trucks and drove off into the city. Since there weren't that many members compared to before, it wasn't all that cramped during the ride. If anything, it was far more comfortable since there was plenty of space for people to sit and relax as they made their way to Portland.
"So, which hospital do we plan to go to?" Kane asked, a bit curious. "I'm not all that familiar with Portland, so I don't know where we're going."
"The MaineHealth Hospital," Hazel explained. "It'll have the supplies we need."
"That's a good call," John agreed with a firm nod. "I've been to that place a few times, and I can agree that they will have the materials and equipment we need."
Since John was born in Portland, Maine, like Hazel, he knew just as much about the place as her. Maybe more since he was older than the two, which meant he possessed more experience and knowledge. Either way, having another Portland resident was rather comforting to Hazel, since she wasn't alone in this.
Of course, there was also her mom, but Evelyn was staying behind to help Zoe out, along with Anais. Although she possessed the Healer Class, Hazel's mom was more than capable when it came to organizing and managing. It also helped that she was a Business Administrator before the world went to hell.
Hazel was surprised by how busy her mom was. Well, she was quite busy back when their lives were normal and all, but Evelyn seemed to be far more preoccupied with multiple tasks and such. Of course, that didn't mean she was the only one handling all of the tasks. From what Hazel had witnessed, Zoe and Anais seemed to be just as busy. Zoe was especially buried in work now that she was a Guild Leader.
She wasn't managing paperwork, but she was certainly running around the base and helping with various tasks from the village development to the base defenses. The latter was very important after what happened with the invaders from before. Even if the invader's quest was inevitable, that didn't mean they couldn't set up defenses anyway. Especially for threats that would attempt to enter their territory from outside of it.
A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation.
Hazel hoped that her mom wasn't working herself too hard. And she hoped that she didn't while she was escorting Astrid back to the Greyvolk tribe. It should only take Hazel a couple of days to get her partner back home and head back to Portland, so nothing should happen during that time frame. Sadly, there was still a high chance that something could definitely happen. Especially after what happened with the spider queen.
Even though Hazel was only testing her spells, she miraculously disturbed a nest of a powerful monster that possessed a large army of spider creatures. From just a single action, she initiated a nearly five-day raiding event where they fought a copious number of monsters before taking on the queen herself.
If this could happen to Hazel, something similar could happen to her mom while she was gone. Because of this possibility, she was hesitant to leave her mother in Portland. If possible, she would want to bring Evelyn with her, just to be safe, but she also didn't want to take her mom away from Zoe and the rest of the Guild.
Unlike Hazel, Evelyn was part of the Valiant Guild, and she was obviously a valuable member to Zoe. It wasn't just because of her class, but also likely the fact that she had also been a part of the Knight's group since the very beginning. This practically made her a founding member of the Valiant Guild, in a way.
And it was due to this that Hazel felt hesitant to take her mom away from the Guild, since that could cause a problem. Though that shouldn't be her main concern at the moment. Right now, they needed to head over to the hospital and see what they could find there.
A little while passed by until the group finally arrived at their destination. Well, kind of. The cargo truck suddenly stopped, prompting everyone, including Hazel, to get out of the vehicle. Once they were out, the driver approached them with an apologetic expression.
"Sorry, but I was unable to drive us any closer to the hospital," He said while pointing ahead of them.
In the distance, Hazel and the other players could see the MaineHealth hospital building. Only instead of being in front of the place, they were a few blocks away. And the reason why was simple; they were blocked by the cars in front of them.
Because of how messed up their world was at the moment, it wasn't all that surprising to see a large gathering of vehicles blocking their path. If anything, this was to be expected since no one had the chance to move their cars to the side before they were whisked off to the Tutorial Dungeon to likely die a horrible death if they were lucky.
John stared at the cars blocking their path with a narrowed gaze. "Well, since we're here, we should move these cars out of the way to make a permanent path."
"Already on it," Hazel declared while stepping forward.
She then raised her hands and cast Telekinesis on the vehicles around them, effortlessly moving them over to the side. The sound of metal and tire scraping against the ground could be heard, followed by a loud thud when the vehicles were released from her telekinetic spell.
The other players watched this unfold with a look of awe plastered on their faces. Even Chegyaeyi, John, and Kane could not help but look amazed by Hazel's spell usage.
"Geez," Kane whistled. "She's moving those things like it's nothing."
"She must possess a lot of mana to actually use that spell of hers so often," John noted, clearly curious about how strong and capable Hazel was.
Hazel did her best to ignore the numerous stares being directed at her and continued to move the cars one by one, making a clear path for the other players, including the cargo truck, so they didn't have to walk back over here when it was time to leave. Then, for the next few blocks, this persisted until they were finally at the front of the hospital.
Hazel stood in front of the building for a moment, looking up to take in its appearance. Part of the structure was damaged as if something big had crashed into it. There were even several large holes in the walls that led into the building. Taking note of this, she turned and faced John and the others who were waiting behind her.
"We should tread carefully," She told them. "Much like any other building, there could be monsters inside. Or other players."
John quickly caught on to her meaning regarding players and firmly nodded. While taking on monsters was one thing, going after players was another. Unless they attacked first, in any case.
Everyone soon got ready, and when they were, Hazel then led the group inside the hospital, hoping to find the materials they were searching for.
