Guess who's back?
It has been far longer than I ever thought it was going to be, and too much has happened in the interim for me to even want to get into. But it's finally time for me to continue writing and finish to Book Two.
For any of you who are subscribed to my Patreon, you'll have seen that I've been working hard on getting the final edits for Book One out. I've been using all of that editing and rewriting as a way to get myself back into shape. I didn't want to announce my return here on Royal Road until I knew that I would be able to write consistently. You've all put up with enough of my BS and you didn't need me offering some sort of false start.
Starting next week, I will resume twice-weekly uploads, at least until I wrap up Book 2. I've left you all on a cliffhanger for long enough.
Once I've closed out the story for the second book, I'm going to have to take a serious look at re-launching Burning Starlight. I was always kind of on the fence at the concept, but a break this long without posting is pretty damning. Any momentum I had in terms of getting new readers is gone. Thankfully, like I said above, I've been working pretty hard on cranking out those final drafts for the Book One rewrite. The changes are fairly significant.

The writing is better and more consistent. The timeline of events has changed and, in some cases, been completely altered. Additionally, during my absence, I actually took the time to map out Blake's class and progression in a way that I hadn't done before, and so ripples of that are present in the re-write as well. Perhaps the most important thing is that I think I've smoothed out the tone and genre of the story for the reader. I knew from the beginning that I was writing a fantasy story with the veneer of a sci-fi story—science fantasy, if you will, instead of pure science fiction. That being said, I didn't handle that very well in my initial draft, leading a lot of readers to be confused as to what to expect. I think I've set the expectations a lot clearer this time around.
Oh, and I filled an entire damn notebook with notes and ramblings about how exactly cultivation and the System work. All of that should be WAY more consistent and not feel so stitched together.
Seeing how the final rewrite is shaping up, I actually feel pretty good about the idea of relaunching. Frankly speaking, I don't want people reading the half-baked, writeathon-fueled version of the current story.
This page, and this version of the story, aren't going anywhere.
All of your comments and the community that we fostered here are far too important for me to delete out of hand. That said, when I get around to posting Book 3, it will be on that new page.
So yeah, that's the plan. In all my rambling, I just barely hit the minimum word count for this post, so I guess I can stop now.
See you all next week!
