I saw the change that came upon Scott when Jonathan mentioned his name. The tenseness that hadn't been evident before melted away, leaving him looking relaxed. I could now see the difference between the patronizing smile he had on earlier when he had been talking to me and the one that lifted his lips now.
"Were you very surprised when you arrived? I didn't want to tell you in advance to make sure you came." Scott said, and Jonathan nodded.
"It definitely wasn't what I had been expecting. How did you organize this?"
Scott shrugged. "I have my ways. I called in a few favors from back then. I just wanted to restate how sorry I am for what happened, to remind you of how it used to be between us, and state my interest in being in your life again."
My brows rose. Was it just me, or did that sound like an ex-girlfriend that couldn't move on?
Jonathan glanced at me and saw that I was fighting laughter. He shook his head. "He's just making it sound like that. And there was one more person in the group later on."
I nodded. "Right." I could see from Scott's laughing eyes that he had intentionally made it sound that way. "So what do you say? Am I forgiven?"
Jonathan rolled his eyes. "After what you just pulled. I don't think you gave me that much of a chance. Were you the one that organized the party?"
Scott shook his head. "Of course not. You guys are in a league of your own. I just called in a favor and was able to negotiate an hour and a half for myself. The others were also kept busy, so there's no need to worry about that."
"So are we to join the party now?" I asked.
Scott nodded. "Yes. It officially started about thirty minutes ago. I came to get you two since it felt like you were going to run off on us."
"I was considering it." I said wryly and Scott smiled.
"You both have to be there. At least for an hour. There's one more surprise for you as well. It took a lot of negotiation before I got this info."
We both turned to him, but Scott shook his head. "I'm not spilling it. The faster you join us, the faster you will be able to leave. It's so obvious on both your face that you're looking for a way to flee, but unfortunately, your evening has just started."
I groaned and Scott laughed. "I think I'm going to like your wife." I felt Jonathan tense again at that statement and watched as Scott paled a little. "Not like that. As your wife. She's perfect for you."
I sighed. I was definitely going to get to the bottom of whatever was going on between them, but that time wasn't now. I turned to Jonathan. "Come on. Let's go and join the party. I love surprises." I said with as much excitement as I could muster, which unfortunately, wasn't much.
Without waiting for him to respond, I grabbed his arm, and we headed out of the door. I could see the look of relief that briefly crossed Scott's face as I led my husband out.
"He sounds like a nice person." I commented and, as expected, Jonathan didn't respond. The tenseness hadn't left him either.
I released his arm as we walked through the balcony to the door about sixty meters ahead, where I could guess the party was happening. As uninterested in architecture as I was, this place fascinated me, but I needed to focus on the task at hand, so I asked. "Are relationships between guys typically like that, or are you two a little unique?"
Jonathan stopped and looked at me. We were already closer to the door that I could hear the dull thud of music. "What are you getting at?" He asked with a frown that was probably to dissuade me from asking more.
I shrugged, ignoring it. "It's just the first time I've seen and heard a guy prepare and plan something so lavish to apologize. It's just made me curious, that's all."
Jonathan's piercing gaze still hadn't left me and as tempted as I was to look down, I kept my eyes on him, hiding whatever he thought he could find there.
"We were good friends before we had a falling out a few years ago. Him suddenly reappearing now doesn't bode well, and so I don't trust him. You shouldn't either, although I can imagine how difficult that would be." He finished with a pointed gaze.
I rolled my eyes. "I'm not as trusting as you assume. Since you don't trust him, I won't either." I cocked my head and muttered. "He just seems very familiar, like I've seen him before." I continued walking. "And not just physically. Just his vibe somehow. I'm probably just imagining it." I finished with a shrug.
It wasn't the fact that I had simply been talking to myself and not expecting Jonathan to reply that made me trip and almost fall on my face but his reply. "What?" I asked incredulous.
Jonathan didn't glance at me as he walked in front of me. "You're not just imagining it. He's the one in the video that was making the rounds. The fight."
I stopped him with a hand to his arm. "Really? Then why is he back? You said there was no permanent damage. Are you sure he's not here to take his revenge?"
Jonathan leaned against the wall. "That's possible, but I don't know. We can talk about him another time. For now, we have to allow him to pass."
I gasped and moved in time for Scott to pass us both. "Of course I don't fault you both for thinking that, but I swear, it's nothing like that. You can ask your husband for the full story later, but for now, we really need to get to the party."
I forced a smile, embarrassed, and nodded as he walked the remaining step and opened the door. I slapped Jonathan's arm. "You knew he was hearing, and you still allowed me to talk like that?"
He shrugged. "We weren't gossiping. You were just expressing what you thought." He said, amused and walked to the door, looking back at me when he realized I hadn't followed him there. "Are you going to stay here and wallow in your embarrassment?" He asked.
I rolled my eyes. "That jerk. I just can't understand men." I muttered to myself and went to join him. He opened his arm and I tucked into him and glanced at him. "Ready?" He asked and I nodded, smiling. We opened the door and entered the hall that had been transformed into the dance hall I'd expected earlier.
