Married to my suspect

Chapter 50: CHAPTER FIFTY

JONATHAN'S POV

"You want to go to the police station now?" I asked Eleni over the phone.

"Yes. If you're not too busy. I'm very anxious staying home alone. If you're not chanced to, I can go alone. I'll take a cab." She replied, and I looked outside my office. Danielle was already packing to go for the event she said she had to prepare for.

"I don't think you have to be there in person. I'm free today, so I can head to the police station first and then have my driver pick you up." I replied. "I planned to go there today for a personal matter anyway, so it's no big deal." I added it before she started trying to insist I didn't have to. Women could be weird sometimes.

She hesitated. "Alright then. You can just call me when you find out."

There was a knock on the door as I dropped the call. "Come in." I called out.

Danielle entered the office. "I'm going to be headed out now, sir."

I nodded. "Alright. Have fun."

She nodded and left my office. Thirty minutes after she had gone, I packed my system and bag. I had also planned to leave early to go to the station to see if I could get anything more as well as get a restraining order for Eleni's husband, and coincidentally, Danielle had also had to leave early.

I parked my car at the station's parking lot and came down. I entered the station and was about to call out a greeting, but my name had come out in the conversation that was currently taking place between Fred and two other officers. I kept quiet and moved back out, making sure I could still hear what was being said.

"Have you been able to get the young and rich Jonathan out of your hair now?" One of the other officers asked Fred who laughed.

"You know how persistent he can be. I'm already tired of seeing his face."

"How much of the case does he know? Were you able to get anything from his system?" The other officer asked, and I narrowed my eyes. My guess had been accurate anyway.

"Just what I've told him. The file didn't go to me. I had to submit it straight to the person who had given me the order. But he told me the computer was very clean. Our client must be very cautious." Fred replied, and the officer that had spoken earlier whistled.

"How did you get so lucky to land a deal that big?" He asked, his voice carrying a teasing note, and the other two laughed.

"That's why we always tell you not to take everything so strictly. There are certain connections you can form that can take you to places you can rarely get to yourself." The other officer said, and I scoffed. There was nothing they had said that I didn't know. If only they would reveal who was on the other end of that deal. Now, I realized dealing with the cops would be a huge waste of my time. I needed to find the person that was directly related, not a bunch of corrupt government officials whose pockets have been rubbed with money.

"Have you guys ever met before?" One of the officers whispered, and I strained my ears to hear the answer; instead, what I heard was laughter.

"You really know nothing yet even after all these whiles, do you, Matt? I have lots of cases I need to get back to and can't waste my time talking like this." Fred responded, also in a whisper, and I nodded from my position. Which could have meant two things. He either knew the person but was under strict orders not to reveal that, or he didn't trust the other officers, even though they knew he was being bribed to hide things about Ethan's case from me.

I heard a car entering the parking lot, and I quickly opened the door again. "Hello, officers. It's been a while." I greeted enthusiastically, dropping the cups of coffee I'd picked up on one of the desks closest to me.

Surprisingly, it hadn't just been the three officers who had been in the station; there were other officers at their seats. Was everyone aware of what was going on?

Fred physically flinched as he heard my voice, and I saw him exchange a glance with the officers he had been talking to. He stood up from his seat and gave me a handshake. "It's been a while. Hope there's no problem?" He glanced at the cups of coffee. "You kept your promise. Thanks for the coffee." He turned to the other officers. "If you're interested, it will be much better than the trash that is in the vending machine."

He turned back to me. "Have your seat. Is everything okay?"

I nodded. "Of course. I have a different issue right now, and I'm thinking of giving up on my search. It's futile that I've kept up with it for the past three years, not just wasting my time but your time."

Fred nodded, and I saw the excitement on his face. "Really? That's great. Now, Ethan will be able to rest in peace. He must have had his reasons for going that far, but I'm sure he wouldn't have wanted you to focus on his death, ignoring yourself. What's the other issue you came for?"

I glanced to the side and saw the other two officers exchange a smile. "You're right. How do I go about getting a restraining order against someone that will possibly make a dangerous move later on?"

I hadn't let Eleni go on her own because I knew how these types of cases usually ended. Since she had never actually reported her husband to the cops before, not even in Greek, they wouldn't easily believe her, but since it was me, I was sure I could avoid the 'He's just not suspicious enough for us to file a restraining order so easily.'

"Is someone threatening you?" He asked, startled.

I shook my head. "Not me, but someone I know. What are the steps I can take to ensure he never goes near her ever again?"

Fred relaxed. "She'll need to come here and give her statements. We'll see how serious it is, and, if possible, file a temporary restraining order. She'll also have to appear in front of a judge for approval. Will she be able to do this? When did your wife last see the person who is threatening her? Is it a stalker?"

I shook my head. "No. It's not my wife. Can she come in now? And how soon will she be able to appear in front of a judge? She will be relieved if this can be taken care of as soon as possible."

Fred narrowed his eyes. "Your younger sister?" He asked, and I glared at him. He sat straighter. "Sorry about that. Yes, she can come in when she's able. She'll need to fill out a form with details on the person and the past events that happened that triggered her wanting a restraining order."

I nodded, thinking about it. Now that I was considering it, these cops weren't to be trusted when the case involved someone influential, seeing how I was being lied to because someone was paying them behind the scenes. Unfortunately, though, this was the headquarters of this jurisdiction, and I knew going to one of the subordinate offices wasn't going to help much. I guess I was sticking with this place then. I just had to make sure they did the right thing when it concerned Eleni. Since money seemed to make them more flexible, I was going to use what I had.

I stood up and went outside, dialing Eleni's number. "Hey," I greeted when she picked it up. "How does now sound? My driver will pick you up when you're ready, so you have nothing to worry about."

I heard her sigh of relief. "Okay. I'll be ready in maybe twenty minutes. Is that okay?"

"Of course. I'll send the driver's number to you so you can just call the number when you're done."

"Thank you, Jonathan." She replied, and I nodded and dropped the call, going back into the station.

I went back to where I was sitting before. "She'll be here in about forty minutes. In the meantime, can I see Ethan's file for the last time?"

Fred raised his head and stared at me. "Is there something more you're looking for?" He asked, his tone bordering on annoyed. I could also see the curse in his eyes.

I shrugged. "No. It just seems best that I go through it for the last time. I want to remember the things there. Like you said, I didn't know him that well for him to take that kind of action. I would like to see the statements for the last time as I make peace with it."

Fred sighed. "Alright." I stared at his back as he headed to the cabinet. I knew exactly what was in the file. I just needed to see it for the last time to see if there were any inconsistencies and to know where I was going to start my new investigation from. As well as see if I'll be able to see the parts that could possibly have been removed.
