JONATHAN'S POV
I'd pondered on whether to ask her this question or not, even though it was the first that had come to mind when she had suggested this ridiculous game. I hadn't been honest with my answers, and I'd been around enough liars a lot to know she hadn't been totally honest with me either. In the end, I decided to ask her. I wasn't that curious since I was confident of my ability to find out without her help, but it was a lot of fun to fluster her every once in a while.
"Why did you go searching in my room the night I traveled for a meeting?" I asked her, and she froze. She remained silent for the next two minutes, and when she responded, it wasn't the question I had been expecting she asked.
"Are you watching me?"
"What?" I replied, a little flustered.
She shrugged. "Fine. I get that you knew I had looked in your room, but how about you? Are you watching me? Do you have a monitor on me or something like that?"
I narrowed my eyes. Was she trying to distract me so she didn't have to answer the question? That wasn't going to work this time because she was really making me curious. From her clenched fists and eyes that seemed to flit from side to side, I would say my guess was accurate.
"How about you answer first, then I'll answer your question, and then we'll bring this session to a close? Sounds good to you?" I replied, my voice wrapped in sarcasm.
She poured more wine into her glass, drank it all, and took a breath, the first sign she was preparing her lie, and when she began speaking, her eyes were at a spot ahead. A tell in liars. "Nothing. Why would you think I was looking for anything in your room?" She shrugged. "It was just the first time since we had gotten married, and I was curious to see how a billionaire lived. Fine, I agree that wasn't right morally, but neither was monitoring nor putting people on me, so I think we're fine."
I nodded. "You're right." Two could play the same game, though. "I wasn't watching you. As you must have noticed, I'm someone who hates things being cluttered, so I immediately noticed someone had been in my room, so who else could I suspect aside from the wife I'd recently placed at home?" I lied.
She was beginning to turn red. Whether from the wine or from the questions, I wasn't sure. "I was just being curious. There's no crime there, is there?"
I shook my head. "You're right, and that's why I just wanted to know." She was beginning to slur her words, so I knew her redness was from the wine, which wasn't so surprising given I was still on my first glass and the wine was already reaching quarter.
She glared at me. "What were the things in your room then? The picture and the thing in the box." She ended her question in a whisper, and I started shaking my head to let her know she had asked her last question, but I decided against it. Why not just answer her? After all, she was already drunk and probably wouldn't remember the end of this conversation by tomorrow.
"Someone sent the things in the box to me, and it started the day after we got married. Any idea who it might be?"
She shook her head and started falling forward, and I grabbed her. She glanced at me and lifted her empty glass to her lips. "Huh."
She made a move to refill the glass, and I shook my head and collected it from her and drank the remaining in mine when her eyes went to it. "That's mine." She accused.
I stared at her and closed the bottle of wine as she looked in drunken confusion. The fact that she had gotten drunk all of a sudden on the glass of wine that contained less than 10% alcohol told me she wasn't someone that indulged in drinking a lot. "I know, but it's better for you to stop drinking. When did you last take alcohol?" The headache she was going to wake up with tomorrow wasn't going to be nice.
She frowned, or tried to, since her face wasn't agreeing with her because the frown was just a slight crinkling of her nose. "I don't know. Maybe last year." She slurred, counting what on her fingers, I had no idea. "I want my wine." She said, her hand stretched to collect her empty glass still in my hand.
I shook my head. "Come on, let's get you to bed." She stared at me wordlessly as I supported her until she was standing. With me supporting her, I opened the office door and almost hit Eleni that was standing there, hand raised to the knob. We both flinched, and Eleni let out a short scream.
"What are you doing here?" I asked her, confused. So far, I didn't think she had ventured upstairs even once since she moved in.
"Jeez. You startled me." We both said it at the same time. She noticed Danielle that I was supporting and moved closer to her.
"What happened to her? Is she okay?" She asked, concern filling her voice.
"She's drunk. I'm taking her to bed. How about you? Did you need something?"
She nodded. "I wanted to see if you guys were already asleep. I wanted to discuss something with both of you. Maybe we'll discuss it later." But from her posture and tone of voice, it was evident she had taken a bold step in trying to reach us, and it would be a little difficult to pry what was wrong from her any other time.
I stood still. I was at a crossroads With work, I knew the next week wasn't going to be easy with all the meetings with the directors I was going to have to make to try to buy their shares as well as get to know the people who were on my side. Also, since I knew a little of what Julia was capable of, I was going to be busy trying to keep myself and my family safe from her, developing countermeasures and ways to protect myself. Plus, the file, yet uncrypted, still lay in my office.
"Is it something you can discuss with me? I'll let Danielle know what happens."
She looked at me with suspicion, and I shook my head. "Next week and God knows how long will be very busy for me and Danielle, so we probably will not have this time to meet again. But if you would rather Danielle be present, we can wait until it's more comfortable for both of us." She had become really close to Danielle, and I knew she shared things with her I still didn't know about even though I'd known her earlier. That was just one of Danielle's charms.
"Alright. It's not that big of a deal, so you can just tell Danielle later. Plus, I would really like to tell you now."
I nodded. "Alright. Let me take her to bed, and I'll come and meet you in the living room."
She nodded. "Okay." She replied.
I took Danielle to the room, removed her slippers, and laid her on the bed, covering her with the duvet. Something she did every time, even when it wasn't cold.
She mumbled a few words and turned, already out cold. I made a mental note to get up before she did tomorrow so I could prepare coffee for her. She wasn't going to like herself when she woke up. I stared at her for a few minutes before heading to the door. It wouldn't have been right for me to help her change her clothes so she would have to sleep like that, even if it was uncomfortable.
