Married to my suspect

Chapter 35: CHAPTER THIRTY FIVE

DANIELLE'S POV

My steak left uneaten on the table, my eyes moved between Lucas and Jonathan. What the heck was he talking about, and why did Lucas keep on mentioning my name? Last I checked, I hadn't told him anything about my marriage. Or had I? Was I dreaming right now?

Jonathan turned to Lucas more fully. "What the hell are you talking about?" His voice was a whisper, and from the clenching of his jaws, no one could miss the fact that he was furious about what was going on.

Lucas laughed. What was he doing, and what was going on with him? "What's there to be so angry about?" He turned to me with panicked eyes. "Was it meant to be a secret? You didn't specify that. Alright, I'll pretend I never heard. I promise."

I turned to Jonathan, completely turning my face from Lucas. "I don't know what he's talking about." I laughed, a sound bordering on manic. "What is going on right now?" Jonathan's look of fury was now completely turned to me.

Lillian hit the table lightly. "I'm sure Lucas misunderstood what happened. Maybe he made a mistake."

Lucas turned to his girlfriend, and the look he gave her sent shivers up my arms. "Are you accusing me of lying? You? Fine, I'll say the truth. I actually heard it from Lillian, and Danielle was the one that told her. Have you forgotten so soon, babe?"

What was he doing? I was at my wit's end. "What exactly did you hear from Lillian? Care to enlighten me?" One thing I really hated was people lying against me, and while I knew Lucas couldn't have intentionally done this, I needed to understand his reasoning.

He shrugged. "That Jonathan killed his older brother. The same person that started the company with him. Why are you acting dumb?"

I turned to Jonathan in shock. "What?" He did what to his brother? The room in his bedroom flashed in my mind. Was he the murderer, rather than someone looking for a murderer like I'd assumed?

Jonathan stood up, and I flinched. "I'd advise you to get your facts right. It won't do me anything to file a defamation suit against you, and I can assure you that you won't want that to happen." He said and left the restaurant.

I stood up as well and glared at Lucas. "What was that for? How do you know that, and why did you keep on saying I told Lillian that? This is the first I'm hearing of it." I glanced at Lillian, and she didn't look even a bit shocked. Had they planned this together? What were they planning to gain by pulling this?

I ran after Jonathan and sighted the already moving car. I moved quickly and placed myself in front of the moving vehicle, hoping and praying he decided to stop rather than hit me. My prayer was answered. The car skidded to a stop in front of me. "Are you crazy?" He yelled.

I remained there, my legs unable to move out of fear. "No, but you cannot leave me here like this."

He laughed. "I'm not in the mood for this. I'm sure you should be able to get yourself back."

"Jonathan, I swear, I have no idea what went on in the restaurant. Since our marriage, this is the second time I'm seeing Lillian, and the only reason I agreed to the date was because Lillian sent me a vague message and I wanted to confirm that she was okay. She struggles with anxiety sometimes. I swear I don't believe a word of what he said." I implored him with intentionally innocent eyes, even as I knew the last statement had been a lie.

He unlocked the car, and I entered. Without any further word or even a glance at me, he sped the way home. He parked the car in the apartment complex and unlocked the door. "Come down."

I stepped out, wary. "Where are you going to?" The last time he and Lucas had done something, it had resulted in a fistfight. On my wedding day, no less. Heaven forbid I allow that to happen again.

"None of your business." He replied, and I held the door.

"I fear it is part of my business. Are you going back to the restaurant with the hope of seeing Lucas there? I don't know where he heard what he said, but he was probably just confused. I know how he is. Just wait a few days, and he'll be the one calling to apologize. He probably got the name wrong and, without thinking, decided to confront you. That's the way he does things. He doesn't think much and doesn't like wasting time on things that bother him, which was why he said all he did." No, I wasn't trying to defend him. I was just stating the facts.

Jonathan stared at me, expressionless. "And your name and involvement? What do you make of that? He probably was so confused that he forgot such an important detail and decided to mention your name. Because, what? Maybe you appeared in his dreams and told him that? Look, you know nothing about me, and I'd prefer that we keep it that way. I'll advise you to take your hands off the door right now if you don't want to regret it."

"Wait." I shouted, but he hit the accelerator, and I took my hands off the door, making it slam into place on its own. With the sound of a speeding car, he was gone. I stared at the ground in despair. What was I going to do now?

I entered the elevator and pressed the button for our floor, remembering, thankfully, that there was someone else at home. Someone else I wasn't sure needed to know what had happened. As it was, since I knew how rational Lucas could be, I was trying to remember when I had mentioned anything about Jonathan to him. Did I get drunk and pass out and blurt it out? Or was it a temporary amnesia? Did I need to see a doctor urgently?

The elevator dinged at our floor, and I got off, inputting the code for the house. I entered, and Eleni waved at me from the chair she was comfortably lying on, watching a show. "You're back early. How was your date? Where is your husband?"

I forced a smile. "Yeah, the other couple had to leave early, and Jonathan needed to get something done at the office, so he dropped me home and headed there. He'll be back once he's done there."

She nodded. "That's too bad. You should have just taken the opportunity to have a date just by yourself. But that's really sweet of him that he dropped you at the house first before he left. Maybe next time then." She said comfortingly, and I smiled again.

"We still have a lot of years, so I'm not worried." I lied. "How about you? Did you enjoy being alone in the house?" I asked and sat beside her.

"I did. I went to raid the pantry, and I was surprised by the amount of snack that was there." She glanced quickly at me. "You said I could, right. I still couldn't help but feel terrible about doing that in someone else's house."

I patted her hands. "I remember saying that, and you shouldn't feel bad. I was in my right senses when I said that. Did you find anything to eat there?"

She smiled. "Not really. After having my diet and meal restricted, it felt too much, and I was unable to eat anything, but don't worry, in a few days I'll be fine, and you'll regret telling me to help myself." She laughed, and I forced one out as well. The asshole. I wished I could see him so I could tear him a new one.

"That won't happen. Let me go and freshen up." I stood up, and she went back to her show with a loud Alright.

I entered the room and flopped on the bed, not even bothering to remove my shoes. I grabbed my phone and dialled Lucas number. At least he should tell me the reason for the sudden madness.

"What is it?" Lucas asked.

I scoffed. "You say something that shocking and have the audacity to ask me what it is? What's the meaning of what just happened?"

He laughed. "You know I'm just looking out for you. I can't watch you ruin your future just like that. How do you feel about being branded as the wife of a murderer? Not a good name for you, right? There you have it."

I rolled my eyes. "What the hell are you even talking about? Do you have proof? What happens if ny husband decides to take this to court like he said? Have you forgotten who he is?"

There was silence on the other end for a while.

"Hello? Are you still there?" I removed my phone from my ears to confirm it was still connected and heard the ending word only. "... Hate it."

"What did you say? I didn't get that." I asked.

"Don't worry about it. As for proof, I know you more than you know yourself, and I know you were already suspicious of what he was hiding. Someone of his caliber like you said cannot have a completely clean record, so I checked. You should be thanking me for opening your eyes." He scoffed. "A friend of another friend went to uni with him and showed me some articles about it that was posted on their student website before it was deleted. The most suspicious part is the fact that there is absolutely nothing about his brother. Why do you think that happened? Also, he disappeared shortly after it happened and hasn't been in touch with any of them. The people that were also close with his brother also disappeared. You should be able to do the math right?"

I nodded and, collecting myself, laughed. "That doesn't prove anything, does it? You could have misunderstood everything."

I could hear the smile in his voice. "Alright. Hang up. You want proof, I'll send it to you." Without waiting for a response, he hung up. A few seconds later, my phone beeped with an incoming text.
