A Guide for Background Characters to Survive in a Manga

Ch. 264

Chapter 264

After posting, Su Bei logged off the forum, not forgetting to remind Manga Consciousness, “If the author’s thinking of banning my account, let me know.”

He’d spilled major spoilers before, and the author never cared, seemingly ignoring the forum. But just in case, he needed a heads-up.

“Don’t worry, it won’t happen,” Manga Consciousness reassured. “The author doesn’t usually check the forum. Even now, they just have an assistant gather feedback about you.”

Su Bei nodded. As long as he avoided posting about himself, he wouldn’t draw the author’s attention. He could keep spilling like before.

Past 11, Su Bei ordered lunch. Sun Nan’s recommendation was spot-on—the restaurant’s bridge noodles were top-notch, especially the broth, fresh from an old hen, savory and rich, elevating the dish. The only downside was Zhou Renjie’s call mid-meal, “Su Bei, you still not done? We’ve already cleared a wave of Nightmare Beasts.”

“You know dealing with people is trickier than beasts,” Su Bei said, with no intention of joining. He smoothly made an excuse, “You don’t need me there, right? I’m still handling stuff…”

Mid-sentence, his pupils narrowed, pausing before continuing, “Okay, now I’m really not done. Pass the phone to Mo Xiaotian.”

“What’s that?” Zhou Renjie muttered, confused, handing the phone over, “Su Bei wants you.”

Mo Xiaotian took it cheerfully, “What’s up, North Bro?”

“I’m eating, and someone showed up. Any ideas?” Su Bei asked leisurely, ignoring the green-braided woman across from him.

She wasn’t in a rush, gently calling a waiter to order dessert, waiting as he spoke.

Mo Xiaotian wasn’t dumb, catching on immediately, “She’ll leave soon, don’t worry.”

Su Bei got it. Black Flash sent her to watch him, ensuring he didn’t disrupt Mo Xiaotian’s plan.

“Got it,” Su Bei hung up, turning to the woman, “What should I call you? Teacher Ye? Or…”

“Ye Lin’s fine,” she cut off his sarcasm. “Long time no see, Classmate Su Bei. How’ve you been?”

Despite being a student and a defected teacher, the mood wasn’t tense—more like a casual, unfamiliar teacher-student chat.

Since she wanted small talk, Su Bei played along, “Pretty good. It’s been eventful.”

Campaigns, traitors—plenty of excitement.

Something in that amused Ye Lin, who chuckled behind her hand, “Sounds like our group’s tied to that excitement. You love watching drama—why not join Black Flash? I promise more to see.”

“No thanks, I’m content,” Su Bei refused firmly. With the author eyeing to pin him as Black Flash, he couldn’t be vague. One wrong word, and the author could use it to trap him.

Ye Lin wasn’t surprised, switching topics, “What’s Destiny like inside?”

“We’re free-range, no different from independents,” Su Bei said openly.

He’d prepared for his identity’s exposure since taking Black Flash’s Nightmare Egg task. Being seen as Destiny was better than Black Flash in readers’ eyes.

His answer matched Ye Lin’s knowledge of Destiny. She sighed, “I should’ve guessed you were Destiny. The Space Lock—was that you too?”

During the exam in the Different Space, mostly students were there. Ye Lin believed only Su Bei could be Destiny—others were too young and weak to join.

They’d thought a teacher breaking the Space Lock was Destiny’s agent, planning to exploit it, but couldn’t trace them, so they dropped it.

Only recently, learning Su Bei was likely Destiny, did they realize the truth. They thought he got the Space Lock, not that he delivered it—his strength seemed too low.

Su Bei didn’t clarify—pointless. If this made the manga, he’d see how to use it.

“When’s Mo Xiaotian moving?” Su Bei asked, bored, finishing his noodles as Ye Lin lingered.

Jiang Tianming’s group was rushing back. Once they landed, they’d head straight for their team—two mole suspects and a victim. Anyone could see trouble brewing.

With Lei Ze’en’s teleportation at the academy, support could arrive instantly. If Mo Xiaotian didn’t act fast, he’d be caught red-handed.

“Probably already started,” Ye Lin said, checking the time with a smile. “Not worried about your classmates?”

Su Bei smirked, “Better worry about what you’ll do when you fail.”

Her confident expression faltered, “What? You tipped them off? Or foresaw our failure?”

“You’ve still got time to pull Mo Xiaotian out,” Su Bei said lazily, ignoring her. “Wait longer, and escape might be tough.”

Ye Lin gauged his attitude, deciding he hadn’t snitched. Relaxing slightly, she refused, “No. We prepared too much to let Zhou Renjie pay for betraying us. Xiaotian won’t be caught—he’s got plenty of escape items.”

As Black Flash’s Saint, Mo Xiaotian, like Si Zhaohua, Ai Baozhu, and Feng Lan, had countless items. For this task, they’d loaded him with more escape tools. He wouldn’t be caught.

But that was Saint treatment—other members weren’t so lucky. Ye Lin’s words showed indifference to their fate. Su Bei could guess what’d happen to those left behind when support arrived.

He didn’t care either. Villains worrying about employee lives? Might as well demand they offer insurance.

Though Ye Lin wasn’t worried about Mo Xiaotian’s escape, she feared his failure. She stood, “I’m checking on things. Hope I don’t see you there.”

“Funny, I’m heading there too,” Su Bei stood.

Ye Lin asked warily, “Why?”

She worried he’d interfere—his Ability was hard to counter, risking more surprises.

“To watch the show,” Su Bei said boldly.

The drama was ending—he, a key player, had to be there. He didn’t want a big role, but total absence would raise more suspicion than a brief appearance.

It’d look like he was scheming behind the scenes.

Ye Lin frowned but nodded, and they set off. She knew Mo Xiaotian’s location, speeding to the site in her car.

Getting out, she flicked her hair, refreshed, noticing Su Bei’s grim face, “You okay?”

“Not okay,” Su Bei fought nausea. “Didn’t Teacher Meng or Lei complain about your driving?”

Her driving was wild—straight roads turned into a rollercoaster of twists, speed insane. Several times, he thought they’d crash, but she swerved perfectly. Was she skilled or reckless?

Hearing familiar names, Ye Lin’s eyes dimmed, then she smiled, “You’re too weak. Xiaotian loves my driving.”

Of course—thrill-ride driving was his thing.

Too annoyed to roast her, Su Bei hurried to the fighting sounds. It was a wasteland, as expected—Mo Xiaotian’s group battled Black Flash members.

They sent Attack Track Ability Users—lightning, flames. Good thing it was open land, or the academy’s repair bill would’ve been steep.

Yes, the academy paid for damages. Black Flash wouldn’t, and residents shouldn’t bear it—lest Ability Users and civilians clash. The weak get bullied, an eternal truth.

The Ability world had money, so whoever caused damage paid. Government Ability Users—government paid. Academy students—academy paid. Solo graduates? Tough luck.

A large rock hid them. Su Bei and Ye Lin watched from behind.

Mu Tieren’s group wasn’t the rookie team fleeing Black Flash anymore. A year of intense tasks gave them more experience than most students in three years.

Frequent danger honed their skills. Against non-top-tier Ability Users, they could hold their own.

They’d already called the academy for help when Black Flash arrived. Support was coming—they just needed to hold on.

Mo Xiaotian, coordinating with his opponent, edged behind Zhou Renjie. The others, focused on fighting, didn’t notice his odd path.

Ye Lin, watching, said, “I admired Zhou Renjie. He was average at the academy, but his bold undercover move changed my view.”

Su Bei agreed. Most felt the same—his defection wasn’t a shock.

Only Si Zhaohua and Ai Baozhu, his childhood friends, truly trusted him.

“So fond of him, why not go easy?” Su Bei teased, knowing she wouldn’t. If she would, she’d have stayed at the restaurant, letting the academy’s support roll in.

Ye Lin’s expression stayed calm, “Know why Black Flash is after Zhou Renjie?”

As obvious as 1+1, Su Bei hesitated, then answered honestly, “For betraying Black Flash?”

“Right. So I can’t betray them, or I’m next,” Ye Lin shrugged, freer without her teacher role.

She chuckled, “With the leader’s temper, he’d probably send my brainwashed sister to hunt me. I can’t handle that, so no going easy.”

Her only living relative, her sister, was her top priority. Without that leverage, the leader wouldn’t have dared send her to Endless Ability Academy for years.

Su Bei had no comeback—she was right, no room to slack.

As they chatted, Mo Xiaotian moved. He didn’t attack directly—Mu Tieren and Ai Baozhu would’ve shielded Zhou Renjie instantly. Ai Baozhu’s Defense Track Ability made protecting easy.

Positioning behind Zhou Renjie was for timing. His [Air] Ability, invisible, was perfect for stealth attacks.

From behind, he could easily trip Zhou Renjie—an air wall blocked his kick, letting an opponent land a punch; a tiny “bomb cube” exploded by his hand, causing a kick; sudden air loss nearly made him collapse.

Once or twice was nothing, but repeated, it tilted the fight toward Black Flash.

Zhou Renjie, no fool, noticed, “Someone’s sneaking me!”

Mu Tieren and Ai Baozhu tensed. Zhou Renjie held three opponents in his belly—if he went down, the balance would collapse.

They closed in, Ai Baozhu’s [Gorgeous Domain] shielding them. They’d held long enough—support was near.

Mo Xiaotian joined the circle. With Black Flash blocked outside, he’d have to kill Zhou Renjie himself.

As he neared, now behind Zhou Renjie, Mu Tieren spoke, “Xiaotian, I’ve wondered—why the bandage on your neck? It’s been there forever.”

Mo Xiaotian froze, touching the bandage, “Habit. I got hurt there once, kept it on after it healed.”

Reasonable, but it caught Ai Baozhu’s interest, “Can you take it off now? Skin under bandages gets paler—kinda cool.”

She’d once considered covering herself in bandages for whitening but dropped it to avoid embarrassment.

Mo Xiaotian stiffened, bad at lying, “Not used to it. Maybe when it’s safe.”

Ai Baozhu and Zhou Renjie didn’t think much, but Mu Tieren, knowing him better, glanced silently.

Thinking he’d dodged it, Mo Xiaotian turned back, seeking a chance to strike Zhou Renjie fatally.

Before he could, heat hit his neck. He spun fast but couldn’t dodge Mu Tieren’s hand.

A rip, and Mu Tieren held the used bandage.

Both he and Ai Baozhu looked shocked, seeing the mark. Ai Baozhu asked, uncertain, “That’s—”

Before she finished, Mo Xiaotian spun, plunging a poisoned dagger into Zhou Renjie’s waist.

He aimed for the neck, but Mu Tieren’s quick tackle forced him to settle for the waist.

Ai Baozhu didn’t recognize the Black Lightning Mark, but Mu Tieren did. Early on, a Class F student’s killer had it—Black Flash’s symbol.

Seeing it, Mu Tieren realized Wu Mingbai was framed. Mo Xiaotian was the real mole!

“How’s it you?” Zhou Renjie, in pain, turned, incredulous.

He’d considered anyone but Mo Xiaotian. How could that fool be a mole? A mole needed cunning, not silliness.

Mu Tieren and Ai Baozhu were equally shocked. Mu Tieren had suspected, hence the move, but confirming Mo Xiaotian was the mole was hard to believe. His silliness wasn’t fake—how’d he hide it so long?

With his identity exposed, Mo Xiaotian dropped the act, “Sorry, Renjie. I told the organization to treat you well, but they didn’t listen… Still, betraying the organization is unforgivable.”

His absurd sincerity stunned Su Bei, “You really brainwashed him, huh?”

“Pretty much,” Ye Lin nodded. “Like my sister, raised and brainwashed loyal to the organization.”

Such ingrained values weren’t easily shaken. Su Bei, aware of Mo Xiaotian’s skewed morals, wasn’t surprised but curious, “How’d he hide it so long?”

With Mo Xiaotian’s loose lips, secrets should’ve spilled instantly.

Ye Lin, unconcerned about secrecy—Su Bei could find this in Destiny’s records—said, “Before going undercover, he was hypnotized by Gong Yuzhi. Anything mole-related, he’d keep secret and kill anyone who learned it.”
