Zhang Fuyong and An Lan's father sat on small stools, chatting while they watched over the babies.
The family in the neighboring spot had already set up their tent, and the father was working on the barbecue. His wife came over with their daughter to say hello to the babies. The little girl was quite cute and well-mannered.
"Can I watch with you?"
The babies looked up to see a pretty older girl. They had no objections, of course, and agreed on the spot.
The older girl squatted down to peer into the small bucket, her eyes shining with excitement. "Wow, you have so many little fish! Did you catch them all in the river?"
Si Bao proudly said, "Dad caught them with that net. It just went SWOOSH, and he pulled them all up."
Er Bao pointed at Zhang Fuyong. "My grandpa tried for ages and didn't catch a single one!"
Da Bao boasted, "Our dad is the best!"
San Bao nodded, her little hair buns wobbling adorably.
The little girl's mother said, "Nan Nan, you play with your little brothers and sisters, okay? Mommy's going to go help Daddy."
Nan Nan nodded obediently. "Okay, Mommy!"
Her mother added a reminder, "Don't bully your little brother and sisters, alright? You're the big sister now, so you need to be sensible. Understand?"
Nan Nan continued to nod obediently. "I understand!" She even urged her, "Mommy, you can go now. I'll stay right here!"
Nan Nan's mother was a bit worried, but Zhang Fuyong and An Lan's father smiled and said, "Go on with your work. We'll help watch the kids."
The mother smiled gratefully. "Thank you, gentlemen!"
"It's no trouble at all, no need for thanks!"
Even so, Nan Nan's mother kept looking back as she walked away. After returning to her tent, she must have said something to her husband, because she came back a moment later. She was probably still worried about her child.
Zhang Fuyong pointed to a small stool not far away. "There's a stool over there. You can bring it over and sit down."
Nan Nan's mother brought a small stool over and sat beside her daughter. She hadn't noticed the babies' appearances at first, assuming they were from several different families. Now, looking closer, she saw they all bore a striking resemblance to one another.
"Are they quadruplets?" she asked in surprise.
Zhang Fuyong nodded.
"How old are they?" Nan Nan's mother asked again.
"They'll be a year and a half in about a month."
Nan Nan's mother was astonished. "They've grown so well. They don't look like they're only a year and a half old."
"And your daughter?" Zhang Fuyong asked.
"She's five. She's in her second year of preschool now."
Nan Nan, staring at the fish in the small bucket, suggested, "We could dig a hole and keep all the little fish in it."
The babies thought this sounded interesting and readily agreed. The five children seriously selected a spot and began to dig. They had brought all the essentials for their trip, including small buckets and shovels. Each of them started digging their own hole to keep their fish in.
Da Bao was the strongest and the type to simply put his head down and work. He found a spot and started digging with single-minded focus. The other babies had only just begun, but he had already dug a small hole.
Er Bao and San Bao had the least strength, so they were the slowest diggers. The two of them were making similar progress.
Nan Nan's mother reminded her daughter from the side, "Dig a little deeper, so the little fish won't be able to swim out."
The babies thought that made a lot of sense, so they began to dig a little deeper.
Meanwhile, the barbecue was almost ready. Lin Feng set aside a portion of each food item and brought some over to Zhang Fuyong and An Lan's father.
When Nan Nan's mother saw Lin Feng, her first thought was how handsome he was. After all, she was a sucker for a handsome face. "Hello!"
Lin Feng gave a faint smile, set down the food, and left.
Zhang Fuyong said with a smile, "Nan Nan's mother, you have some too. My son-in-law is a really good cook."
Nan Nan's mother shook her head. "No, thank you. My husband has already started grilling our own."
Nan Nan, being the oldest, dug very quickly and should have been the first to finish. Surprisingly, however, first place went to Da Bao! He had dug a very large and deep pit.
Wiping his sweat, he asked, "Grandpa, is mine good enough?"
Zhang Fuyong took a look. "It's perfect."
So, Da Bao was the first to receive two little fish.
"Come on, Grandpa will help you!" Zhang Fuyong said. "But first, we need to put some water in here so the fish can survive. How can fish live without water?"
Zhang Fuyong fetched some water in another bucket and poured it into the pit. Then he gave Da Bao two fish.
Da Bao was ecstatic and shouted, "Daddy, Mommy, Grandma, Godmother, I'm raising fish!"
Everyone he called out to responded happily.
Feeling that wasn't enough, Da Bao ran over with a PITTER-PATTER. "Mommy, come see my fish! Da Bao is raising them himself."
Zhang Yuxi quickly finished the last mouthful of her grilled meat. "Okay, let's go take a look together."
Da Bao looked at Lin Feng. "Daddy Bao, you come too! You all have to see!"
Before he left, Lin Feng reminded An Lan and her mother to keep turning the meat so it wouldn't burn.
The couple walked over to Da Bao's little fishpond. In the murky water, they could vaguely see two small fish swimming around.
Da Bao said with pride and delight, "Mommy, Daddy, isn't Da Bao amazing?"
His parents showered him with praise.
"Not bad at all, Da Bao! You're awesome!"
"So, we'll raise these two little fish, shall we?"
Da Bao nodded. "I've already named them."
The couple asked with interest, "What are their names?"
Da Bao said with a grin, "Da Bai and Fei Fei."
Weren't those the names of their dog and cat? Even so, the couple thought the names were great.
The second one to finish was Nan Nan, but she didn't have any fish. She asked the other children for their opinion. "Can you guys share one fish with me? A small one is fine!"
Si Bao, while still busily digging, replied, "No problem, just take one."
Er Bao had no objections. "Sure!"
In the end, Nan Nan's mother scooped out a small fish for her.
Nan Nan was overjoyed. "Thank you all!"
Seeing this, Zhang Fuyong smiled and said, "You've raised your child well. She's very polite."
Nan Nan's mother smiled humbly. "Not at all. I guess since she's in preschool now, she's quite the little adult."
Next to finish was Si Bao. But who was Si Bao? He was the type who preferred to do things himself, seldom relying on others. He picked up his bucket to go get water by himself.
Lin Feng quickly followed him. "Son, are you going alone?"
Si Bao nodded. "Yeah!"
"That's dangerous. You have to ask an adult to come with you!"
Looking at Si Bao's puzzled expression, Lin Feng knew his son well enough to tell he had misunderstood something. He took Si Bao's small hand and walked him to the edge of the stream.
"This is very deep, you know? Extremely deep!" Lin Feng explained.
Si Bao looked startled for a moment. The clearness of the stream gave the children the false impression that it was shallow.
Lin Feng looked around and found a branch nearby. "Here, watch. Daddy will measure it for you, and you'll see."
He tested the depth with the small branch. When Si Bao saw the entire branch disappear into the stream, he was astonished.
Lin Feng took this opportunity to teach Si Bao. "From now on, tell Mommy or Daddy before you do something, understand?"
Si Bao nodded. "I understand."
