While running forward, he slid on the street. His right foot stretched forward diagonally, while his left knee bent, supporting and balancing him. When he stopped sliding, he twisted his upper body backward.
Amon held his sword tightly and swung it horizontally.
[Umbral Veil Sword Art: First Form – Crescent of Dusk]
A curved dark shadowy slash tore through the air horizontally.
Slash! Slash! Slash!
"Roooaarr!"
Splatter!
The dark slash cut down three abominations at the same time. Their cleaved bodies fell on the ground limply.
Amon's breath grew heavy, his mana draining.
Blood dripped from a cut on his cheek from one of the monsters' attacks, but his grin only widened.
"Heh... come on! You think I'm scared now?"
He spun his hatchet once more, slashing through another beast's neck.
"Hah! Hah!" He breathed heavily.
Suddenly—
One of the beasts jumped from his right side, from the window of a broken house. Amon was late to react.
"Aarghh!" He screamed in pain as the monster's teeth sank into his flesh. Blood flowed.
It had bitten his right arm.
Amon didn't let it continue, as his hatchet raised upward and came down in a silver line. It crushed the monster's head with one swift swing.
But he got no rest. Another two lunged at him from behind.
Thud!
Amon fell forward.
"Ahh!"
They had pinned him down on the dark street.
The stone street was cold against his cheek.
'Fuck! Move, you bastard!' Amon tried to get out. He struggled.
One beast was ready to tear apart Amon's flesh with its long, sharp claws, while the other was lowering its head to bite into his flesh.
"Aaarghh!" Amon spread his mana all over his body, strengthening it to get up.
But then suddenly, those beasts started to growl loudly.
"Screecch!"
"Screecch!"
Not only these two, but others as well. Their black, skinny bodies started to become transparent as they slowly vanished, as if they had never existed in the first place.
Amon, who felt the grip on him loosen, pushed himself up.
"Aarrgh!"
Thud! Thud!
Both beasts fell on the ground. Amon saw their bodies becoming transparent as they disappeared.
'What's happening?' Amon narrowed his eyes in confusion.
The only thing that remained were the dead bodies of the beasts Amon had killed up until now.
The living ones were gone.
"Why?" Amon questioned. He was curious. Then he noticed.
His head turned upward, toward the sky. There was the moon. The clouds had moved away from it, and its light fell again on the city.
'Is it really moonlight?'
With a sigh, he summoned a healing potion.
"I only have one... well, it's better than nothing." He chugged down the potion.
The bitten wound on his right arm stopped bleeding and slowly started to mend.
'Coming here was the wrong decision after all. I should head back before something comes again.'
He moved his face, looking here and there. He wondered which path he had come from.
Yes, he forgot. Rather, he was lost.
While running away from the horde of those beasts, he had taken random paths.
So now he didn't know where the teleportation gate was.
He sat on the nearby window of a house.
He put his right hand under his chin while supporting his elbow with his left hand.
Amon went into deep thinking.
The black tower was located in the center, but the temple was at one end of the city.
When Amon came out of the building where the teleportation gate was, he had seen that the tower was in the center while the temple was at one end, in the right direction from where he was standing at that time.
Currently, the temple was on the left side of him.
'That means I'm at the opposite side of that place. Where I need to go now,' he thought, jumping down to the ground from the window edge.
He smirked. After all, he was very smart.
He walked leisurely. "No! What am I doing? I should move fast before another danger comes," he said to himself.
His eyes fell on the tower.
'Man... there are so many places to explore here. The tower, that temple, some mansion... which also looks mysterious. Hah... I won't get another chance,' he thought dejectedly.
It was true that he wouldn't get another chance. Since once he got back, he wouldn't have a chance to come here again.
Also, he didn't know what this place was, so he couldn't travel here later.
"Tch!" He clicked his tongue in irritation.
He walked in that direction with a funny expression.
After walking for some minutes, his legs stopped at a particular place.
It was a mansion — large and beautiful. It was old as well. The walls were cracked, and moss had grown on them.
"A last visit... it doesn't sound bad." Amon was coward. Yet he was very curious one.
"I really am going to get myself killed like this...meh. let's see what happens!" Amon said.
There was still time. The sky looked clear, so no fear of the moon hiding behind the clouds.
He took a few cautious steps toward the gates. The metal creaked loudly as he pushed it open, the noise echoing down the empty street.
The mansion looked ancient, built from the same black stone as the rest of the city. The tall iron gates at the front were half-rusted, hanging loosely on broken hinges.
Some of the windows were shattered, and the rest were pitch dark. Vines had crept up the walls, swallowing the structure whole.
The front yard was filled with dried roots and debris. Statues stood on both sides of the cracked path. Once elegant figures, now missing heads or limbs.
The statue were that of knights. He can atleast tell that.
The mansion doors were tall, carved with intricate patterns that had faded over centuries.
Amon raised his sword, the faint blue glow of mana running along its edge.
He walked up the steps slowly, his boots brushing away the dust of ages.
The door was already slightly open. He placed his hand on it and pushed it inward.
