9 grades of hell

Chapter 74: A Demon’s Heartbreak

Renny tilted his head slightly. "Alright. Well, rather than paying in contract points, how about you do something else for me instead?"

Myla blinked, then blushed faintly. "Something else?" she echoed, her tone dipping, half curious, half shy, as if she'd already imagined what he might mean.

Renny gave her a flat look. "Not that kind of something," he said dryly.

Her face went redder. "Right... of course not! I didn't mean..." She cleared her throat quickly, clutching her books a little tighter. "So, what is it then?"

"There's a Grade Five demon named Asmeryn Damaruk," Renny said evenly. "He's a repeat. Should be Grade Six by now, but apparently couldn't make the jump."

Myla's brows rose, and then her lips curved. "Asmeryn? Oh, I know him. I've seen him during family meetings." She paused, a sly smile forming. "We're… relatives, in a way."

"Right," Renny said. "Then you'll find this easy. I just need you to observe him."

She tilted her head. "Observe him? Like a demon spy?" she asked, grinning.

"Right, right," Renny replied, his tone dry. "Just watch. What he does most of the time, who he hangs around with, how he's handling his contracts, basically anything you can pick up."

Myla adjusted her glasses. "And how long am I doing this for?"

"Till the fourteenth," Renny said. "We'll meet again at the Grade Building on campus. That day, I'll give you the seed you want, and you'll give me what you've gathered."

She nodded slowly, then smiled. "Alright, deal."

Renny's tone hardened just a little. "And, Myla... keep this between us. If this gets out, next time you need a seed from me, I'll refuse. You know I'm the only Ezraphor here. No one else can get you the kind I have access to."

Myla smirked. "You don't have to worry. I'm loyal."

Renny chuckled under his breath. "You're a demon. Demons lie. That's why I gave you a consequence if you break the deal."

Her eyes flickered at that, then she nodded. "I won't."

"Good."

She let out a small sigh, the tension easing. "Thank you, Renayo. Really."She hesitated, stepping slightly closer. "I'd hug you, but..."

"A handshake will do," Renny said flatly.

She laughed softly. "Right. A handshake."

They clasped hands, sealing their quiet agreement before parting ways down the corridor.

Renny was on his way home when his phone buzzed. The name flashing on the screen made him pause — Morrin Omekro.

He answered, only to be greeted by the sound of sobbing.

Renny frowned. "...Morrin?"

"R-Renayo…" Morrin's voice cracked, wet and broken. "C-could you... could you come over?"

Renny's brow arched. He couldn't quite process what he was hearing. A demon crying was rare. A powerful one? Practically impossible.

Still, he exhaled softly. "Alright. No problem."

He changed course toward the Omekro estate. The air around the massive complex was unnervingly still when he arrived. He entered the building, took the elevator up, and stopped in front of Morrin's apartment door.

He knocked once.No answer.

He knocked again.Still nothing.

Renny muttered under his breath, "Didn't he call me here?"

He dialed Morrin's number again. The sobbing returned immediately through the receiver.

"Morrin," Renny said flatly, "I'm literally outside your apartment. Where are you?"

"I... I'm here…" came the shaky reply.

Renny blinked. "Then open the door."

There was a pause... then, slowly, the door creaked open.

Renny froze for a moment, taking in the sight. Morrin stood there, wrapped in sheets, surrounded by tissues like battlefield debris. His usually immaculate hair stuck up in every direction, and his eyes were swollen red.

Renny's expression shifted from surprise to mild disbelief. "What the hell happened to you?"

"Life is cruel, Ren!" Morrin burst out, his voice rising into a dramatic wail.

Normally, Morrin spoke like a storm of spit and flair. But this... this was another level entirely. Renny had never thought it possible for the man to get wetter when emotional, yet here he was, sobbing and spraying with every syllable.

"It's cruel!" Morrin cried again before suddenly lunging forward and hugging him.

Renny just stood there, arms stiff, face twisted in discomfort as Morrin clung to him like his world had ended.

Renny guided Morrin gently into the room, closing the door behind them. He steered the trembling demon toward the bed and sat him down, his tone steady but concerned. "Alright, talk to me. What happened?"

Morrin sniffled loudly, wiping his nose with a tissue already soaked through. "I... I got my heart broken."

Renny froze. Of all the things he expected to hear, that wasn't on the list. It wasn't that demons couldn't get their hearts broken; if they could fall in love, they could most definitely break hearts, but the fact that Morrin, of all demons, had fallen in love in the first place, and not just that, but had his heart broken? What kind of script was this, he wondered.

"You... got your heart broken?" Renny echoed, squinting slightly. "You're serious?"

Morrin nodded miserably. "You know Eryoma, right? From our grade?"

Renny thought for a moment, sifting through names. "She's an Omekro, right?"

"Yeah!" Morrin said, almost proud through his despair. "She's beautiful, Ren. I love her dearly."

Renny tilted his head. "Alright, then what's the problem?"

He already had a guess. A demon like Morrin falling in love was like fire trying to hug gasoline; someone was bound to get burned. Still, he wanted to hear the story firsthand.

"The problem," Morrin said, voice trembling with fresh outrage, "is that she chose that bastard! That lowlife who couldn't even lace my boots!"

He shouted, spraying Renny's face mid-rant. Renny blinked, sighed, and wiped his forehead with his sleeve. "Who?" he asked dryly.

As if he'd been waiting for that cue, Morrin shot up from the bed, chest heaving. "Who else but that stupid Bryokun Omekro!"

Renny was appalled upon hearing this. How could Morrin bring him all the way here just to complain that another demon in his grade was standing between him and what he wanted? Considering Morrin was the strongest in their grade, it made no sense. This was Hell; he was a demon, the strongest of his grade at that. Nothing should stop him from having what he wanted.
