Chapter 154 The Siege of Yulsen_3

"Damn it!" Marquis Angxi looked at the beheaded head of Adelaide lying before him and knew that Yulsen Castle had already fallen.

The main forces of the Beastmen had suffered great losses attacking the castle, with corpses piled around the entire perimeter. Thus, the marquis led the Knightly Army to encircle the remaining Beastmen within the castle.

In this way, the roles of attacker and defender were reversed.

An army of over eighteen thousand knights camped around Yulsen Castle. To prevent Beastmen from coming to their aid, the marquis stationed the troops of Connet Duchy as reserves to ambush from the outside, while personally leading the Knightly Army to attack Yulsen Castle.

"Forward, my soldiers! For the Lady and the King! For Brittania!"

"For the Lady and the King! For Brittania!"

The Peasant Infantry Corps charged first; these peasants were pushed onto the battlefield by the knights as a priority. They shouted slogans, forming a tight formation under the fierce gazes of their master knights. Most of the peasant infantry were only clad in leather armor and bore no shields.

Arrows rained down from the walls; the Inferior Horned Beasts shamelessly used a large quantity of looted arrows. These siege weapons had become their own, with thousands of Inferior Horned Beasts densely lined up on the severely damaged towers, causing significant losses to the Knightly Army.

After peasants fell in large numbers, shield-bearing sergeants in chain armor or chest armor continued the assault, followed by the dismounted knights. For this, the Beast King had made preparations, deploying large quantities of long spears and flying axes from the castle's armory to suppress the knights' advance through firepower.

For a whole day, the Knightly Army organized five waves of attacks. Although they penetrated deep into the castle at times, they were ultimately repelled by the Beastmen.

The knights suffered heavy casualties, and the Beastmen left behind hundreds of corpses as well.

The castle atop the mountain had great topographical variations and was interspersed with rivers. The knights' continuous charges were repelled, and the piles of corpses, ironically, obstructed their assault routes. The large amount of military supplies inside the castle ensured the Beastmen had ample arrows. The knights never managed to gain the advantage, and even when a few knights and sergeants breached the castle interior, the Giant Minotaurs and Great Horned Beast Battle Group would always cut them down one by one.

From noon until sunset, the final turning point of the battlefield was the assault by the Doomsday Bulls and Four-armed Bull Demons. These fearsome large monster corps not only repelled the charging dismounted knights in groups but even annihilated the peasants archers who were covering them, forcing the Knightly Army to retreat.

Marquis Angxi began to feel uneasy. He first cursed the peasants for their lowliness and cowardice, then pinned his hopes on a night raid, personally selecting his elite troops to attack the castle under the cover of darkness.

Unfortunately, the Beastmen were more adept at night warfare than the knights. When the Knightly Army approached the castle, they were driven back again by a barrage of arrows and javelins. The battle continued until dawn, when a Centaur Beast Group flanked from the side and delivered a fatal blow to the night raiders, forcing the knights to retreat once again.

After a day of combat, the Beastmen had lost over two thousand, whereas the Knightly Army suffered the loss of more than two hundred knights and over three thousand peasant soldiers.

The battle reached a standoff; the Knightly Army encircled the remaining seven thousand Beastmen troops in the castle and a small area nearby, yet could not annihilate them. Led by the Beast King, attempts by the Beastmen army to break through failed, so they resolved to hold their ground and await reinforcements.

Marquis Angxi knew well that reinforcements for the Beastmen were on the way, leaving him little time, and even less food.

The Knightly Army was left with only two days' worth of rations!
