How Did I Become an F1 Driver?

Chapter 203: The Overtake Show in Monaco (Part 2)

After that, things got simple. Before even getting out of the tunnel, Qin Miao directly overtook Perez to claim seventh position.

After all, every other driver on the track was running their own pace, and none of them had the idea of overtaking the car ahead, even Hamilton could only stay 1.5 seconds behind Gasly to conserve his tires, making overtaking impossible.

Qin Miao had been following closely behind Perez with eagerness, which is why the broadcast director hadn't shown footage of the other drivers but kept focusing on Qin Miao and Perez, waiting to see when Qin Miao would overtake.

The full scene of this overtaking was witnessed by the live audience.

Fei openly remarked, "Qin Miao's overtaking seemed to have an element of luck, but it was also the result of a 17-lap setup. Without the constant pressure on Perez during those laps, Perez wouldn't have made that mistake."

Bing also commented, "Whether you get the opportunity is decided by fate, but it's up to the driver to seize it."

...

"Beautiful overtake, Qin Miao! Absolutely stunning! Keep pushing." After overtaking Perez, the voice of Toto came through the TR radio.

Usually, these words would be spoken by Frankie, but hearing Toto's voice in the TR signified his genuine happiness at seeing Qin Miao overtaking a Red Bull.

Qin Miao replied to Toto with a "Copy" and then started chasing Vettel, who was three seconds ahead.

Vettel was undoubtedly an experienced and skilled driver. His ability to handle pressure was comparable to Perez's, without making the kind of mistakes Giovinazzi made due to excessive pressure.

So although Qin Miao had overtaken the Red Bull, which seemed quicker than the Aston Martin, overtaking Vettel's Aston Martin on the Monte Carlo track was not easier than overtaking Perez's Red Bull.

Qin Miao was already mentally prepared to follow behind Vettel for 20 minutes until his skills were off cooldown to overtake Vettel.

But sometimes, when luck arrives, it simply cannot be blocked.

By lap 25, two laps later, Vettel encountered a Haas in front of him.

The driver of this car was Russian driver Nikita Mazepin.

Actually, the gap between Mazepin and his teammate Mick in this race wasn't particularly large, with the two Haas cars having only a seven-second difference after 25 laps.

Compared to previous races where the gap between Mazepin and the driver ahead exceeded one minute halfway through, Mazepin was definitely performing above expectations in this race.

Nonetheless, Monte Carlo's track was too short. Despite Mazepin's comparatively good performance today, he had already been lapped by Verstappen by lap 22 and was soon caught by Vettel and Qin Miao, who were in sixth and seventh, respectively, by lap 25.

Regarding lapping, Qin Miao had extensive experience both in F2 and now in F1.

Coincidentally, Vettel caught up with Mazepin at T19, and just missed the DRS zone at the T17 detection point by 1.007 seconds.

At T19, Vettel was blocked by Mazepin, obstructing the best exit line.

When Qin Miao exited T19, Mazepin moved to the inside line of the starting straight, just allowing Qin Miao the best exit line.

With this change, Qin Miao's exit speed was nearly 20 kilometers per hour faster than Vettel.

With such a speed difference, and aided by DRS and ERS, Qin Miao performed a late brake at T1, finally snatching the sixth position from the struggling Vettel.

This overtaking maneuver by Qin Miao naturally garnered cheers from the entire audience, as everyone knew how difficult overtaking was on the Monte Carlo track, and Qin Miao had overtaken five drivers in just 25 laps.

At this point, Leclerc had retired, and without the home driver on the track, the audience was mainly enjoying the spectacle.

The three commentators were full of praises for Qin Miao, and the P room was filled with cheers.

After overtaking Vettel, the driver ahead of Qin Miao was his teammate Hamilton.

Although ahead was his considerate teammate, Qin Miao, who was already in the overtaking mood in Monaco, went straight for the attack.

"Qin Miao has truly been impressive in this race, climbing five positions since the start. And this is Monaco!" Brother Ran said with some emotion.

"Now he's catching up to Old Man. Do you think Toto will order Hamilton to give way to Qin Miao because of his momentum?"

Upon hearing Fei's bold claim, the other two commentators shook their heads in disagreement.

"No way, that's impossible."

"Yeah, Hamilton hasn't made any mistakes in this race nor have there been any car issues. There's no way he would give up his position to Qin Miao."

"And aside from the racing factors, Hamilton is a seven-time world champion. His status within the Mercedes team is significant; unless the speed difference between the two drivers is huge, the team wouldn't issue such a command to Hamilton," Brother Ran analyzed.
