Extreme Cold Era: Shelter Don't Keep Waste

Chapter 466: Personally Going to the New Continent

In Perfikot's laboratory, the massive Godslaying Armor has now begun to take shape.

Various test equipment and components have been installed onto the skeleton-like frame, making it resemble something substantial, rather than just an empty framework.

However, amidst the progress in development, Perfikot's mood isn't particularly bright.

The reason is quite simple; she received battle reports from the New Continent colony, Major General Richard was assassinated. Although he wasn't harmed, the assassin infiltrated his command center.

If it hadn't been for a Steam Knight also being present in Major General Richard's command center at the time, Richard might have been in real peril this time.

Nevertheless, the death of several high-ranking officers within the command center turned this event into a significant disgrace.

"Are you angry? Angry that they used such a lowly means of assassination?" Weir observed Perfikot's obscure expression and couldn't help but inquire: "After all, they're just a bunch of lowbrow thugs. It's not surprising they'd use any means, right? They lack the capability to engage in direct combat with the Empire's army, so they resort to such underhanded tactics."

Weir's words only made it worse; after hearing her evaluation, Perfikot's face turned even uglier.

The emotions stem from her subordinate being assassinated, that was part of it, but more so, her anger was directed at the Revolutionary Army's failure to measure up.

Assassination is not an uncommon tactic; throughout the long historical tides of the original world, many have perished due to it, and many have left their names in history because of it.

No matter how one glorifies it, it cannot change one fact: assassination is a tactic of dishonor.

Regardless of how romantically or heroically acts of assassination like "the dagger revealed at the end when the plot was thin" or "the white rainbow piercing the sun" are depicted, backed by claims of honor and righteousness, assassination remains assassination, with nothing to glorify.

Because at the root of it, it stems from the inability to win directly, resorting to assassinations in hopes of defeating opponents.

In the ancient origins of the original world, even the historian raised assassins up with his narrative style, turning the act into a chivalrous deed. But come the late modern times, assassination totally lost its dignity.

Whether it's Japan's Bakumatsu's divine punishment or Jiang's Military Investigation, puffed up for justice and country, they couldn't hide that they resorted to underhanded tactics because they couldn't win head-on.

Combined with several infamous assassination cases in the modern history of the original world, the name of assassins was long tarnished, and nobody saw it as an act of honor anymore.

Moreover, assassination, in essence, is akin to terrorism. Once such secretive tactics become rampant, they merely turn into methods for eliminating dissent, devoid of any notion of so-called justice.

Therefore, when Mr. Wu Hao—whom Perfikot respected most in the original world—was in charge of intelligence work, he proposed the three no principles: no assassination, no bribery, no seduction.

Perfikot also adhered to this mindset; when establishing her intelligence agency, she upheld these three principles.

Because of this, the intelligence agency in the Northern Territory has an exceptional elite quality.

Yet, it is also why Perfikot was deeply repulsed by assassination; even though she had an Assassin Brotherhood composed of extraordinaries at her disposal, she never considered using assassination to resolve her enemies.

When affairs can be handled openly and triumphantly, why resort to such vile tactics?

Thus, Perfikot naturally felt very dissatisfied that the Revolutionary Army led by Kallen had resorted to assassination.

She hoped the Revolutionary Army under Kallen would have the same spirit as those in her original world; those predecessors who risked their lives for ideals. But as it stands now, Kallen clearly couldn't imbue the Revolutionary Army with a spirit that remains unyielding in any adversity.

Due to such expectations, Perfikot had imparted many teachings to Kallen. When Kallen first arrived, Perfikot thought she was doing well, achieving excellently in many aspects.

However, looking at it now, it seems that the Revolutionary Army is still somewhat mixed in character and lacks the spirit to remain invigorated amidst adversity.

Reflecting on this, Perfikot seriously pondered and then got up to say to Weir, "The development of the Godslaying Armor can be considered as having achieved certain success. For the next few days, carry out tests on the completed parts, while I take a trip to the New Continent."

"You're going personally? Is it necessary to stir such a fuss?" Weir evidently felt that Perfikot personally heading to the New Continent was overplaying the matter.

After all, from any perspective, it seemed to Weir not worth Perfikot making a trip herself.

But Perfikot shook her head, saying, "I won't go to New Continent openly, just as a private visit to meet a friend and understand the situation."

"I see. Well, take care and be safe. There's war going on over there, and amidst the chaos, who knows if there would be any oblivious fools," Weir advised Perfikot. Although she still didn't support Perfikot going to the New Continent colony at this time, ultimately, she refrained from saying more.

Perfikot understood Weir's worries, but she also had a necessary reason to visit the New Continent.

On one hand, she needed to understand in person what exactly was happening within the Revolutionary Army, whether what Kallen told her matched the actual situation of the Revolutionary Army.

If there was indeed a discrepancy, whether Kallen was deceiving her or if Kallen couldn't manage the people underneath, these are matters that require clarification.

After all, this concerns how Perfikot should handle the Revolutionary Army moving forward.

If Kallen really deceived her, then there's nothing more to be said; she'd give up going through Kallen and directly eliminate the Revolutionary Army, nullifying all previous plans.

But if Kallen can't control the subordinates, Perfikot will have to consider how to help her purify the team and eliminate the black sheep within the Revolutionary Army.

Of course, even in the latter case, Perfikot will further suppress the Revolutionary Army, proceeding with "recruitment" through negotiations with Kallen.

This was something Perfikot had long planned ahead, since even if she doesn't suppress Kallen and the Revolutionary Army, the Empire could hardly just stand by and allow the New Continent colony to seek independence.

Although the Empire did suffer a reduction in control over colonies due to facing an apocalypse, it does not mean the Empire would allow colonies to become independent.

Quite the opposite; the Empire needs to maintain stability especially during such times.

In fact, various colonies of the Empire showed tendencies of instability recently. The Military Department dispatched nearly one-third of its Steam Knights, riding Flying Airships to each colony for stability reinforcement.

If it weren't for the proximity to the Northern Territory, Steam Knights responsible for stability in New Continent would probably have arrived by now.
