Los Angeles Legendary Sleuth

Chapter 505: Shrouded in Mystery

Honey List's house.

A black Ford SUV parked not far away.

Luke held a pair of binoculars, observing through the car window. There was a white wooden fence around both the front and back yards of Honey List's house, standing 50 centimeters taller than the neighbors', affording more privacy.

Luke put down the binoculars. The white wooden fence was more than a meter high, and from this angle, it was impossible to see inside.

The sky darkened, and visibility to the naked eye significantly decreased.

Luke took out a walkie-talkie, "Jackson, the infrared drone can take off now."

"Okay, Captain."

The drone slowly ascended from a distance, and Luke opened a mobile app to receive infrared images simultaneously.

The drone flew over Honey List's house, capturing the layout from above.

The front yard was flat, with no debris or human heat sources.

There were no lights on in the house, nor were any obvious heat sources detected.

The drone then flew over the backyard. It appeared as if a large rectangular pit had been dug, though the infrared imaging was not very clear.

Luke glanced at the sky outside; it wasn't completely dark yet. He took out the walkie-talkie and said, "Jackson, switch to the HD camera."

"Copy that."

Before long, the screen switched to a regular image. Though it was somewhat dark, things could still be made out clearly.

The backyard indeed had a large rectangular pit, piled on both sides with plastic bags, and half-covered with dark green cloth.

Little Black came closer, wide-eyed, "Did they dig a trench back there?"

Luke nodded, "Seems like it."

"Why would he dig that in the backyard?" Little Black found it odd and speculated, "Could it be that he anticipated the police would come looking for him? Planning to hide in the trench and fight back?"

Luke couldn't figure it out either and was too lazy to ponder. If he were a normal person, he wouldn't be carrying out terror attacks.

After completing the reconnaissance, the drone found no trace of Honey List.

Of course, it's also possible that Honey List was hiding inside the house, and the roof blocked the detection of heat sources.

Luke wasn't in a rush to act, he stationed people near Honey List's house. He had received word from Reid that FBI agents were on their way, best to leave the tough task to them.

About ten minutes later, the FBI arrived in the vicinity.

The head of the FBI called and asked Luke to meet them in a black business vehicle.

Luke confirmed the license plate number and then opened the business vehicle door.

Inside sat a middle-aged white woman with ear-length hair, a common face, dressed in black business attire, looking like a corporate elite.

The woman proactively shook hands with Luke, "I'm Lynn Brouss, Deputy Director of FBI Los Angeles Division, Head of the Anti-Terrorism Department.

Consultant Li, thank you for providing the information."

Luke said, "Since you call me Consultant Li, we're all on the same side; sharing intelligence and cooperating is something we ought to do."

"You're right, not only does the Criminal Investigation Division need forensic consultants, but we also do."

The United States has several anti-terrorism departments. Reid chose to inform the FBI of the terrorist lead, rather than other departments, after careful consideration.

Firstly, he had contacted Frank. If the boss had instructions, they would definitely follow Frank's guidance.

Secondly, he also had to consider Luke's opinion, as Luke was the de facto head of the case.

Luke himself had a preference for the FBI.

The reason is simple; he was an FBI criminal investigation consultant.

Lynn Brouss said, "Consultant Li, can you tell me about the situation here?"

"Of course." Luke recounted when they arrived at Honey List's house, as well as the situation there, briefly.

After listening, Lynn Brouss asked, "Consultant Li, do you have any thoughts on the next steps?"

"Although I've solved some cases, I don't know much about terrorists. For example, Honey List is a retired soldier who probably fought against terrorists in the Middle East. So why has he now changed his stance, demanding the release of detained terrorist leaders?"

Lynn Brouss took out a tablet and tapped a few times, "Here is all the information we could find on Honey List.

He served in a unit in the Middle East for two years, performed excellently, was injured once, and commended twice. He was an outstanding soldier.

The following information is about his situation after returning to the country post-retirement.

After returning to Los Angeles, he had several jobs, each lasting less than two months.

After the slaughterhouse closed, he remained unemployed.

Additionally, there's a police report; the caller was his mother's neighbor, claiming to have heard gunshots early in the morning, originating from his mother's house.

When the police arrived and inquired, his mother claimed there were no gunshots, but investigators found bullet holes and residue at the scene.

Only then did his mother reveal the truth. That morning, she woke Honey List up, and seemingly startled, he fired a shot instinctively, which was a complete misunderstanding.

Shortly after, Honey List was diagnosed with PTSD and moved out of his mother's house, which further strained his financial and living situation.

His mental state is likely very unstable.

The disparity between his stellar military service and real-life difficulties may have led to dissatisfaction with the country and system, prompting acts of retaliation against society."
