Jimmy took out his phone, found Steven Gomez's number from Albuquerque's DEA, and was about to call when Nia spoke up: "Jimmy! What are you doing?"
Jimmy turned to look at Nia: "I want to get in touch with the others, see if they have any leads. What's up?"
Nia: "You look really bad, why not rest for a night first and contact them tomorrow? Your friend on the phone just said he's safe for now."
Jimmy's expression was overly stern as he was thinking earlier, and after hearing Nia's words, he realized he might be overthinking. It was fine, rest for a night and contact them during work hours tomorrow.
Jimmy put the beer on the coffee table and reached out to hug Nia: "Thank you."
The next day, Jimmy returned to the office and didn't rush to call Gomez but first went to find David, "David, how's your investigation going on the Borsa case?"
David looked at Jimmy in surprise. Why was he so concerned about this case? "No progress, what we can confirm is that Borsa is a higher-up in a drug trafficking network, and he might not only be in Texas; there are reports on him in Arizona and New Mexico too, but no one can provide detailed leads to identify who Borsa is, no photos, no other information."
Jimmy: "I've run into some trouble. Torsten from Dallas's DEA was shot and injured two days ago while investigating a drug dealer case. He's in the hospital now, and I'm worried he might have leaked information on Borsa, and it was Borsa's men who did it."
David frowned and thought for a moment: "I have no investigative results on my side, give me some time to check if any of my sources have had problems."
Jimmy nodded: "I'll wait for your news in the office."
Soon, David called Jimmy. He had contacted all of his sources and found no threats, giving Jimmy confirmed information: his sources provided a new lead. Borsa is a subordinate of a Mexican drug lord, a big figure in the drug cartel of deputy-level stature. He definitely won't stay long-term in the U.S. and will frequently shuttle between Mexico and the U.S.
Jimmy hung up the phone and looked at Mark sitting next to him, "Mark, go assist Mahong in investigating the robbery case. They're short on staff there."
Mark glanced at Jimmy, nodded, and got up to leave the office.
Jimmy contacted Torsten again, asking him to carefully recall any anomalies in his recent investigations, like whether the lead sources were normal and if the drug dealers had any special actions.
The reason Jimmy was so keen on investigating was that he was worried if his information had caused Torsten to get hurt. If it was just an occupational hazard from a normal investigation, then fine; but if it was due to information from Jimmy's side, then he'd feel bad.
Torsten didn't blame Jimmy; due to his injury, he had to stay hospitalized but arranged others to investigate the leads he'd gotten. There were no conclusions yet, but upon reflection, Torsten found no signs of deliberate setups. It should just be bad luck.
Jimmy relaxed then and didn't contact the Albuquerque side again, deciding to wait for more news.
The ICE information comparison finally arrived. Among the gunmen Jimmy and Mahong shot, one person's fingerprint was confirmed, determining he entered a week ago from Miami, holding a French passport. However, based on feedback from France, their investigation determined this passport was also fake. It meant someone used a fake French passport to board from France to the U.S. Without anyone noticing his identity had issues throughout the process.
It was somewhat embarrassing, but this situation wasn't the first or second time. Customs didn't hide anything, not only providing information but also entry surveillance footage, clearly showing the target's appearance.
Mahong, upon receiving the footage, immediately contacted Miami's FBI office, requesting their assistance in investigating Pierre's whereabouts in Miami, but it wasn't effective. Pierre took a taxi after leaving the airport, and so much time had passed. The taxi driver had long forgotten picking up such a customer.
Miami is a globally known vacation spot, with tourists from various countries pouring into Miami. Who could remember a nondescript stranger without extraordinarily distinctive features?
Mahong's investigation further stalled, and Jimmy again received a call from Father Rodney, notifying them they're about to take action and asked if Jimmy wanted to join. It was also Jimmy's previous request to Father Rodney.
Jimmy's last Heart Eye breakthrough happened when he was involved in Father Rodney's case. Looking retroactively, each Heart Eye improvement seemed prompted by external stimuli. Coupled with Roland's influence from Black Rainbow, Jimmy could basically conclude that regular use of Heart Eye Skill might only grow slowly. Yet under stronger external stress, he could push some limits, showing noticeable ability growth.
Therefore, regardless of Father Rodney's circumstances, Jimmy hoped to be partially involved. Apart from finding supernatural cases himself, the Church should be a very good source of such cases.
Jimmy checked the time and called Mark to inform him of his needs to leave. Mark would be on duty at the office, notifying him of any issues promptly.
When he arrived at the church, he learned Father Rodney's target wasn't in New York but in neighboring Connecticut. They might be away for days this time. Jimmy couldn't help but call Nia to say he needed a business trip, and then he called Dave, "Dave, it's Jimmy. I'm at Father Rodney's."
Dave asked, "What's up?"
Jimmy: "You asked me to assist them before. Now Father Rodney informed me I need to head out of town, hoping I can accompany them to Connecticut. Specific location unknown."
Dave thought for a while: "What's your judgment? Is there any danger? Do you need any other arrangements?"
Jimmy: "Not sure yet. Father Rodney is reluctant to disclose specifics. Just that it might take some time, and I won't be in the office during this time."
Dave: "OK, I'll sort it out. You go with them."
Dave and Jimmy's conversation didn't last long. Once he hung up, he immediately dialed Anderson Bishop at New York's Archdiocese, hoping to get some news from there.
Previously, Dave linked Jimmy with Bishop Anderson, intending to foster a closer relationship with the Church. Jimmy hadn't mentioned his involvement with Church-related cases until now when he had to leave New York for external support, providing a reason for Dave's interaction with the Church.
Everything has its price; Jimmy's participation in some cases naturally brought achievements, which translated into merit for his superiors, credited to Dave.
Whatever Dave and Bishop Anderson might discuss wasn't Jimmy's concern. His goal wasn't for these people to benefit, but purely for his ability to advance.
Connecticut is a relatively unknown state. Driving with Father Rodney, Jimmy soon arrived at a remote town, which already seemed somewhat abandoned, with many houses appearing uninhabited for a while, overgrown on the lawns and surrounding plots, covered in dust.
This environment indeed resembled those in horror movies. As Jimmy drove, he used Heart Eye Observation to survey the surroundings, detecting nothing unusual for now except decay.
