Chapter 622: Dark Web (Part 2)

Jimmy picked up his clothes, checked them to make sure nothing was left behind, and tossed them into the trash bin. Fortunately, he had plenty of clothes, so it didn't matter if he lost one set. Jimmy opened the wardrobe, looked through it, and picked out clothes to wear the next day, placing them on the chair.

Jimmy busied himself for a while, then suddenly noticed that Nia seemed to have been silent this whole time. He turned his head to find Nia staring at him and couldn't help but ask, "What's wrong?"

Nia's expression was somewhat aggrieved. Jimmy had too many mysteries; many she could ignore, but matters that could involve multiple deaths or injuries, she hoped Jimmy would talk about them. Unfortunately, Jimmy just brushed them off without explanation.

Jimmy climbed into bed directly and wrapped himself in the covers, reaching out to hold Nia. "It's not that I don't want to tell you, it's just that some things might turn your worldview upside down, so..."

Nia looked at Jimmy without saying a word. Seeing the situation might cause problems, Jimmy decided that no matter what, he'd resolve their household issues first. He could talk about keeping secrets later.

Jimmy: "Alright, I went with the Church people to handle a supernatural event. We fired quite a few shots on the scene."

Jimmy reached for the revolver, then from the drawer took out a box of bullets. "It's not that I don't want to tell you, it's just that cases involving supernatural phenomena are classified. I guess only the higher-ups in your police department know a bit about them."

Nia: "What about Dad?"

Jimmy: "Kevin? For sure, he knows something. Not telling you is also for your protection. It's not convenient to speak about these matters to outsiders."

Nia: "So what did you deal with? A ghost?"

Jimmy: "No, just a human possessed by an Evil Spirit, almost knife and bulletproof. Fortunately, the Church had weapons to restrain him, and they finally succeeded in resolving it."

Nia reached out to touch Jimmy's face. "Was it dangerous?"

Jimmy: "Not really. They were engaged in close combat, which was more dangerous. I was just firing shots from a distance. Don't worry. See, I wasn't injured, not at all."

Nia thought for a moment and suddenly asked, "And the video you watched, was it someone like that? Who was he?"

Jimmy: "Don't think too much about it. We aren't likely to see that person again. He's already gone."

Jimmy reloaded the revolver, placed the gun under the pillow, and held Nia to comfort her for a while before going to sleep.

The next morning, Jimmy got up early again. With too much spiritual power, it's hard to sleep when you can't fall asleep. If lying in bed is boring, it's better to get up and make breakfast and coffee to pass the time.

Back at the office, Jimmy received a call from Mahong. There was a case that required them to handle it together, but the specific details weren't discussed over the phone.

Jimmy called Mark and Julia over to this side of the white-collar group, and Mahong and the others were already in the meeting room.

Mahong shook hands and hugged Jimmy, then said: "Okay, everyone's here, let's start."

Mahong turned on the monitor at the front of the meeting room, gesturing for Jones to start. Jones opened a dark web page and began to explain, "While handling an art transaction case a few days ago, we discovered a dark web used by the seller called 'Gray Rat.' The seller had previously sold and purchased a lot of art and contraband on the dark web."

With the support of the technical department, we successfully used the seller's information to pinpoint the dark web's location and, based on server information, obtained the IPs of those logging in to the dark web, capturing the site's administrator."

Having acquired the content of the dark web's server, technical staff investigated the transaction records and item data inside, uncovering many illegal things, including some murder case and rape-murder videos. These videos won't be shown; you can watch them back at your office.

According to the technical staff, these videos are authentic, meaning the perpetrator recorded themselves committing the crime."

Jimmy: "Have you pinpointed the location of the video provider?"

Jones: "Not yet; they used multiple proxies to log into the dark web. The technical team hasn't finished tracing all the login information."

Jimmy: "Mahong, have you watched these videos? Are there any clear clues?"

Mahong: "No, these were found incidentally while solving a case, without any preceding clues. Everything has to be investigated from the videos themselves, while the technical department continues their tracing. However, it'll take a long time, and they might not succeed in tracking it. Forging IP information isn't hard."

Jimmy looked at Julia. "Julia, can you trace those IP addresses?"

Julia shook her head: "Single proxies aren't too difficult, but multiple proxies are extremely hard, especially since some proxy servers change randomly. We can basically give up on this approach."

Jimmy: "Mahong, has your case concluded?"

Mahong nodded: "The stolen art has been recovered; both seller and buyer confirmed and captured. The dark web was a total surprise find."

Jimmy: "OK, first bring over the dark web information, Julia, you take over the data."

Julia nodded, and beside her, Jones closed the presentation, pulled out a USB, and handed it to Julia: "If necessary, you can go to the tech department for the raw data."

Jimmy: "Anything else? If not, we'll head back first."

Mahong: "Mmm, regarding you guys, this is all. There are also other criminal activities involving child pornography, among other things, which I'll submit to the Cyber Crime Investigation Unit for further investigation."

Jimmy: "OK, then we'll head back."

Jimmy took Mark and Julia back to the office. "Julia, you and Mark first check the videos, focusing on finding any clues that can confirm time, place, people, etc. We need some leads before continuing the investigation."

Julia nodded, opened the computer, plugged in the USB, and found the videos inside. Mark moved his chair next to Julia, watching with her. As they opened the first video and watched for a bit, they started shouting, "Fuck! This is a psychopath."

Jimmy looked up at them. They just exclaimed once but continued watching, which was fine.

He had no interest in watching one video after another. Just thinking a little would tell anyone that murder videos sold on the dark web would certainly be marked with bloody, perverse tags. Watching too many would lead to depression, better to let the two of them handle it. Though it's quite brutal on them.

"Next, let's change and watch another one. We can recheck later; I need a break."

After watching the first one, seeing Julia was about to replay it, Mark quickly stopped her.

Julia nodded slightly. "Let's watch later; I need to calm down, too."

Jimmy was speechless. You both were like this just after the first video; what about the rest?

Jimmy: "OK, take a break, let's have some tea."

Jimmy stood up and went to the lounge area, turned on the kettle to boil water, making tea for the two of them to take a break together.

While making tea, Jimmy asked, "What kind of case was it?"

Mark: "Rape and murder, then dismemberment. The environment can't be discerned from the video, surrounded by plastic sheeting, clearly a prepared space, with nothing indicating location found inside. The suspect was masked, and the victim was bound, appearing to be unconscious."

Jimmy: "Any images of the victim?"

Mark nodded. "Yes, but not clearly; the video seems to be processed."

Jimmy: "It's impossible to investigate all these videos. Let's pick some cases with definite markers. We aren't a local police department; we won't handle each case. The focus is finding the video shooter..."

Julia: "But there are a lot of files in there, the one we're watching has five videos... I'll go through them later, there're others too."

Jimmy was speechless. This is at least a serial killer who killed five people, a high-risk criminal indeed.

"This damn world is hopeless."
