I Sell Bottled Water for Gold in Another World!

Chapter 149: Return

Alex refused the offer without hesitation.

The reason was simple.

He genuinely had absolutely no interest in such a position.

He had thoroughly researched and learned about the role of legal advisor beforehand.

The position essentially made the person in position the county magistrate's personal counsellor and consultant.

A legal advisor was responsible for overseeing everything and had to provide guidance on absolutely everything.

Whether the matters involved official government documents or criminal trials or even financial taxation and revenue collection did not matter.

The advisor had to handle all of it.

Alex feared that once he accepted the job there would be endless amounts of work demanding his constant attention.

He already felt like a beast of burden working his modern security job.

Why would he volunteer to work like cattle and horses in ancient times as well?

Of course, Alex firmly said no to this so-called opportunity!

But not everyone present over here share the same sentiments as him.

"Good heavens!" someone in the syndicate gasped audibly.

Everyone present drew in sharp breaths of air soon after. The shock rippling through their hearts was even greater than when the county magistrate had initially asked Alex to become his legal advisor!

And why not the position of advisor was extraordinarily prestigious and powerful on its own.

Many ambitious people desperately wanted to obtain such a role but could never achieve it no matter how hard they tried!

However Alex did not even hesitate for a single moment and refused directly to everyone's faces!

Sheriff Bowen was utterly stunned too. He had never expected that this Young Master Alex would outright refuse to become a legal advisor!

"Young Master Alex you must think very carefully about this decision. When the county magistrate first assumed office I cannot count how many people competed viciously to become his personal advisor but the magistrate was not interested in any of them." Sheriff Bowen's tone carried a warning edge.

"Now that the county magistrate has personally taken a genuine liking to you this represents your tremendous blessing and good fortune in previous lifes giving fruits in this life."

"Do not be so foolish as to refuse such generosity and kindness."

Sheriff Bowen's tone turned noticeably cold and sharp by the end.

Both he and the county magistrate had already shown Alex tremendous respect by coming to meet him personally in the pouring rain. Their explicit purpose was to appoint Alex as their official legal advisor.

Who could have known that Alex did not understand proper etiquette and protocol! He had directly refused their generous offer right to their faces!

This person was extremely ungrateful and disrespectful!

Alex frowned with obvious displeasure. "Am I not permitted to refuse your offer?"

"You..." Sheriff Bowen's face darkened considerably and he was about to speak harshly when Magistrate Sai interrupted him.

"Since Young Master Alex does not wish to become an advisor we absolutely cannot force him against his will step back." Magistrate Sai stated calmly but firmly.

"If Young Master Alex desires to accept the position in the future you may inform me at any time. I will always keep the position of advisor open and available for you specifically."

Magistrate Sai made this generous promise directly to Alex.

He understood perfectly well that this extraordinary man who could pray for rain and command the heavens could only be befriended and cultivated. He absolutely could not be antagonized or made into an enemy by anyhow.

The fact that rain had finally fallen in Ironhold was entirely thanks to Young Master Alex standing before him.

Whether one considered practical benefits or theoretical principles they could only express profound gratitude toward Alex.

Alex responded politely and respectfully. "Thank you County Magistrate for your generosity and understanding."

"Very well then." Sheriff Bowen sighed deeply with resignation.

The reason he had become angry just moments ago was because he felt it was such a terrible waste that a remarkable talent like Alex would not be utilized properly by the government administration.

What had motivated his outburst was the spirit of cherishing and nurturing exceptional talent.

"Young Master Alex you have made such an extraordinary contribution to our city. Is there anything at all we can help you accomplish?" Magistrate Sai asked with genuine interest.

"Please help me locate and contact a jeweler and craftsman from foreign lands. I heard from a young lady here that a jeweler from the distant Western territories once sold jewelry and precious jade in Ironhold approximately two years ago. I am particularly interested in these mechanical devices and specialized crafting techniques." Alex smiled as he made this seemingly innocent request. "If you discover any news or information you can inform me immediately."

Hearing this unusual request both the county magistrate and the sheriff felt curious about Alex's true motivations.

"Of course. I will assign someone to help investigate this matter thoroughly," Magistrate Sai agreed readily.

At three o'clock in the afternoon the sheriff and the county magistrate chatted with Alex for some additional time.

Then they politely said their farewells and departed from the Hartwell family estate to return to the county magistrate's mansion.

Back at the county magistrate's office in his private study Magistrate Sai bathed and changed into fresh robes.

After thinking the matter over repeatedly again and again he decided to submit an official report about this situation directly to the Emperor himself.

"In the city of Ironhold there exists an extraordinary man surnamed Alex..." he began writing carefully.

Two hours later Magistrate Sai finished composing the formal letter and ordered his most trusted men to deliver it personally to the imperial capital city.

"Young Master Alex is truly a remarkable man with exceptional abilities. It is genuinely unfortunate for him to remain living in Ironhold when he could serve the entire empire," Magistrate Sai sighed deeply while alone in his study.

The current ruling dynasty faced tremendous dangers on multiple fronts. Corrupt officials plagued the government from within while barbarian invaders from the northern territories threatened the borders. The military situation had become increasingly critical and desperate.

Perhaps only this extraordinary man like Young Master Alex could help the empire solve its most urgent and pressing problems...

Alex returned to the modern era through his dimensional portal.

He thoroughly washed himself and immediately fell into bed to sleep.

After such an exhausting and tiring day he slept soundly and peacefully so much that he did not wake until noon the following day.

After waking up he took a bath, ordered food delivery then Alex began to count the profits from this recent trip to ancient times while sitting in his spacious living room.

He had not traveled to the ancient timeline for two full weeks.

During his absence the black market operations had generated four large bags filled with gold for him.

One thing to be noted is that they were not small pouches but actual large sacks!

Alex weighed the four bags of gold using his digital electronic scale. The total came to more than ten thousand taels which converted to more than seven hundred fifty million dollars in modern currency.

"Not bad at all. More than seven hundred fifty million dollars earned in just two days," Alex nodded with obvious satisfaction.

As he continued selling water and food supplies on the black market over these past weeks he had gradually drained the gold reserves of many wealthy people throughout Ironhold.

That was precisely why he had decided to pray for rain at that particular time.

The "crops" that represented his customers needed rain to grow continuously and prosper so that he could harvest profits from them repeatedly.

The wealthy merchants and nobles of Ironhold had finite amounts of gold available at any given moment.

Alex needed to solve the drought problem and allow the merchants in Ironhold to resume profitable trade.

Only by enabling them to make money could he harvest better and more sustainable profits over time.

"I almost forgot something important. The Henrik family still owes me eight thousand taels of gold from our wager. Next time I travel back to ancient times I must demand payment from them. I absolutely cannot refuse to collect this money that is rightfully mine."

"Also that businessman Desai and his factory can be utilized much more in the future."

Alex's eyes gleamed with scheming calculation and ambition.

Who possessed the greatest wealth in ancient times?

Not the common people obviously.

Not even the local wealthy nobles and merchants.

The imperial court controlled the greatest wealth!

As the black market business continued expanding and growing Alex always felt certain that one day in future he would conduct business directly with the ancient imperial court itself.

"Miss Evelyn mentioned that the situation at the northern border territories is extremely dire and not optimistic. Barbarian invaders from the north have been attacking relentlessly and several fortified cities have already been lost to enemy forces."

"Perhaps I can provide some military arms and weapons to the Emperor of the dynasty?"

Alex had entertained this ambitious idea for quite some time already.

However since he could not locate a reliable supplier to provide military arms he had not thought much about pursuing it seriously at that time.

But now with the businessman like Desai who had been introduced by his contact Vikram he could think much more about it.
