I suppose it all started with this devoted and diligent noble couple that was respected and admired by all.
The nobleman was honourable and righteous. The noblewoman was graceful and dutiful.
The two were the perfect representation of noble virtue, and both lived for nothing more than to be that perfect picture of virtue.
"Are they your parents?" Akane asked suddenly.
"Must be." Syl nodded.
Can I have my fucking monologue in peace?
Sigh…
Having recently lost servants, the noble couple needed to find suitable replacements.
After a long search, they came across this small store in a side alley of the city.
This store was run by two sisters, and the noble couple was immediately enthralled.
The older sister was everything that the noblewoman admired. She was industrious, refined, and a hard worker. The older sister worked tirelessly to make clothes of incredibly high quality that were sold for a fraction of the price they were worth. The older sister wouldn't have minded if that was all the clothes were worth, since her magic was incredibly useful in making these clothes. The problem was that the price was driven down by her sister.
The sisters were opposites, with the younger being whimsical and free-spirited. She cared for nothing but fun and laughter.
While the older sister worked tirelessly inside the store, the younger sister remained outside, performing puppet shows and tricks that mostly impressed the poor and the orphans.
The crowds loved her, but the nobles stirred clear. Her shows attracted the masses and made the streets noisy.
No noble would approach when the younger sister tirelessly drew in the poor and the orphans.
The enterprise wasn't going anywhere, but the older sister couldn't separate from the only family she had.
Slowly but surely, the older grew to resent the younger. For her carelessness, her selfishness, as well as the joy and happiness that came so easily to her.
This situation is what led them to be taken in by the noble couple.
The older sister was taken in as a servant, while the younger sister shared a room with her and was free to spend her time how she wished.
It took a while for anyone to realize, but the older sister wasn't the only one to have impressed someone.
The younger sister, through her free-spiritedness, had captured the nobleman's heart.
At first, he would ask her to perform her puppet shows, and the nobleman would be enthralled by her smile and laughter.
It didn't take long, however, for him to desire more than smiles and laughter.
For the first time, the nobleman took a concubine.
This devastated the noblewoman, who felt it to be a great shame and insult. It was utterly degrading to her, and the fact that it was a woman she had brought into the estate only made her feel like more of a fool.
Her husband had made a random wench, not even a noble or servant, sleep under the same roof, under the same sheets.
Shame consumed her.
The older sister felt betrayed as well. Once again, she had toiled and worked hours upon hours, only for her sister to gain better treatment and higher status, when the younger had only been brought along, riding on the coattails of the older's diligence and discipline.
This charming tale took a bit of a turn when the younger sister became pregnant with the nobleman's child.
After learning the news, all sense of shame exited the nobleman's body and mind. He asserted that, upon the birth of his child, he would marry the younger sister and make her his second wife.
It was incredible news.
The noblewoman would be made a cuckquean completely, and the older sister would remain a servant forever, while the younger sister would become nobility.
One night, while the older sister was preparing the noblewoman's clothes for the next day, the latter came at the former with a plan, which the sister refused.
To curse her sister's child was going too far. It was something she could never do.
Akane's eyes narrowed. "She still did it."
Six months into the pregnancy, a fight between the sisters took place.
The older had begged the younger to help her, to at least take her as her own servant.
The younger said she couldn't do anything about that, and that crossing the noblewoman wasn't in her interests.
The older reminded her sister of all the work she had put in over the years, but the younger did not care one bit. In fact, she seemed disgusted by her sister, explaining that she had never asked her to work so hard, or to work at all.
"You were so happy to become a servant, now you think that I owe you something?" Rita recounted. "You've lived your life like a slave eager to serve, and that's how you will live the remaining of your days."
'Huh…' Syl pursed her lips. 'Why did she say it like that? Did Rita hear this from one of the sisters directly?'
It should be obvious that what was unthinkable before, wasn't anymore.
Not only had she refused to help her sister then, but she had implied that she would never help her.
I do not know what they used exactly, or who they called upon.
All the same, a baby was born with two tiny black horns protruding from its head.
The noblewoman immediately claimed that the mother, just like the baby, was a demon in disguise all along.
Inquisitors rushed into the estate.
The noblewoman hadn't shared what kind of curse she had planned for her rival. The older sister thought she was simply fating her younger sister to a miscarriage, which would keep her from marrying the nobleman, which would keep her by her sister's side, on the same level and status.
Nothing could be done as this point.
The younger sister's fate was sealed. The Inquisitors would execute her, no matter what. It didn't matter if she was a Demon herself or not. Giving birth to a Demon was sin enough.
The older sister knew there was no way of turning this against the noblewoman. They would never take a servant's word above a noble's.
As such, the older sister felt there was only one thing to do, and that was to hide the proof.
She took the demonic baby and escaped from the estate.
She ran and ran with the baby, with the only proof that her sister had given birth to a demon, and abandoned it in the streets.
She couldn't bear seeing what she had turned her niece into, and she couldn't risk being caught with that baby, as that would clearly circle back to the noble couple's estate and to her sister.
The baby grew, somehow. Nobody knows how, but it did.
Eventually, as most Demons do, at some point or other, the Demon child undertook a long, tiresome, and ultimately meaningless journey.
All who were turned into Demons can be differentiated from pure Demons.
As such, those who were turned into Demons will, almost always, go on a journey to uncover their origins, their pasts, and why they became what they are.
"It took a while for me to find her. I wouldn't have, had Levia not helped," Rita explained. "She told me about a woman who could use magic similar to mine, and I found my aunt."
Akane gulped while Syl listened carefully.
"She didn't tell me anything. She didn't even tell me that she was my aunt. She just pointed toward a noble estate and said that I should go there, that I was fated to go there. It was a rather funny encounter." Rita whispered, her gaze slowly falling to the ground. "I thought she… Liked me or something, when I first appeared. Thought she recognized me as her blood, the way she smiled. But that wasn't exactly it. She said that she would do it before I could, and used her threads to slit her wrists."
Both listeners were silent.
"She thought of me as a Devil back for revenge or something. In a way, I suppose I was." Rita's voice darkened. "So I went to the estate. I found the noblewoman that the old hag had described to me. She was older, pale, but it was her. The nobleman was also alive." She smiled faintly. "The noblewoman told me anything. It only took restraining her with my threads. At once, I learned everything about my past. I learned that I was the way I was because of her. I learned that, after the baby had been taken away by a servant, the Inquisitors had felt Demonic remains on the woman's body, and had executed her on the spot. Anyway…"
"Did you kill her?" Akane asked.
The Succubus was taken aback. The Fox didn't seem to judge her at all. In fact, it was almost like the Fox was cheering for her to have killed that noblewoman.
"No." Rita shook her head slowly. "I heard steps coming from behind me, so I tightened the binds around her and glued her to the ceiling." She brought her hands together, the corners of her lips curling upwards. "The nobleman recognized me. It was such a shock. He recognized me right away, and hugged me tightly."
"He did?" Syl raised an eyebrow.
"He recognizes his daughter, huh?"
Rita raised her gaze upwards as she chuckled.
"He hugged me tightly, called me my mother's name, and led me to his bed."
