Orion and Margaret continued on, although Orion decided to change directions. He wasn't interested in encountering Seris or Caelum now; he'd leave them to their devices.
"I don't think you should have spared him," Margaret commented, her eyes on the boy who'd taken the job of helping her pass the trial.
"Why not?" Orion asked.
"I don't think he was worth it." She replied.
Orion chuckled.
"Worth it."
"Yes, I don't think he was worth it. I doubt he'd be happy to pay you back any favours." She clarified.
"I doubt that too," Orion said.
"Then why'd you spare him?" She asked.
'Wow, look at this girl. She's literally breezing through this trial, no strings attached, and she's criticising someone else.' Orion thought, amused, but he didn't point out his thoughts.
"I don't spare people only because of favours," Orion replied.
Margaret frowned.
"So you do it, just on a whim. You enjoy playing god." She said hesitantly.
Orion stopped and turned to her, his eye bro raised.
"That's… how did you come to such a conclusion?" Orion asked.
"It's the only viable one that came to mind." She replied.
Orion just shook his head and continued moving.
Although he would never admit it to her or any other person, a minor part of him took pleasure in the feeling of superiority he felt whenever he spared someone, whether he/she was filled with gratitude or seething with frustration.
There were a few exceptions when he'd genuinely been impressed by someone or understood someone, like Irelle, for example. Still, he was conscious of this and mildly scared of what would come of it, even though it didn't seem like much now.
"I spare some because I genuinely believe they are special and worthy enough to study here. Like you, for example." Orion explained.
"Yes, that's the definition of playing god." She replied.
Orion just sighed.
[She's starting to become more of a mental liability than an asset.]
'For once, we agree.' Orion thought.
"I'm just saying, playing god or not, that boy is going to come back and get revenge on you, one way or the other." She said with a frown.
"While I'm happy you're showing concern for me. I really don't need you to state something obvious." Orion said.
"Alright, I just hope you don't regret-"
She was about to finish her sentence when she noticed Orion swerve his head to the side with a small frown on his face.
She immediately stepped closer to him. This wasn't the first time something like this had happened, and judging by the scowl on his face, she could tell enemies were near, and the type of enemies Orion fought were out of her league.
"How many?" She asked, her eyes darting around, in case of an ambush.
But what she heard confused her.
"Zero," Orion replied, confusion on his face.
Margaret turned to him.
"Zero? What do you mean by zero? Is this so-"
Orion shut her up with his hand.
"I know I felt something, but it's gone," Orion said.
Margaret glared at him, trying to pry his hands off.
The presence of someone in his vicinity or the possibility of escape isn't what bothered Orion; it was the fact that someone had gotten so close to them without him noticing that put him on edge.
And considering he was still trying to spread his senses to locate this person without any turn up was off-putting.
He could head straight to where he'd felt the person, but that would be foolish; he'd have changed direction.
The best thing would have been to scan with Mana Sense, but that was bringing up nothing.
He turned to Margaret, who was still glaring at him, before removing his hand and signalling her to be quiet. He'd picked up the person quite close; there might be a chance he could hear him or her.
Margaret just sighed before whispering. "Have you considered you might have made a mistake?" She said, already understanding what was going through Orion's head.
Orion thought about what she said, but not to sound overly proud, he highly doubted that.
It had never happened before, his mana sense detecting what wasn't there.
But her statement brought something else to mind.
'Is she tampering with my mana sense?' He thought.
It hadn't happened so far, but he couldn't rule out the possibility that the person in question didn't even realise she could do such a thing.
'Is there a possibility system?' Orion asked.
[Probably, but I highly doubt it. The fact that it hasn't happened once in the past hour significantly decreases the chances of it being that]
'I thought so.'
'So it's either an ability or a skill,' Orion thought.
"Absolute stealth." He muttered, looking in the direction he'd noticed the person.
"I had a feeling you'd be too proud to consider you made a mistake," Margaret said with a scoff.
"Absolute stealth, my foot." She said.
Orion just stared at her.
"Goodbye." He said, walking away.
Margaret's eyes widened.
"Wha..goodbye!! What do you mean goodbye? Wait!!" Margaret shouted, chasing after him.
"Being sassy to your benefactor is considered an act of growing past requiring said benefits," Orion said.
"What! No, it's not. I'm sorry. I'll try not to be sassy anymore." She said, grabbing his hand.
"Try," Orion said with a raised brow.
"I won't be sassy anymore." She said with gritted teeth.
Orion smiled.
"Good, cause we're going after the stalker. Try to keep up." Orion said before surging off.
"What, wait!" She shouted, chasing after him.
Orion immediately activated The Seer, his eyes glowing golden, and he moved towards the direction he'd noticed the person.
His eyes scanned around a wide radius for any signs of the person or any traces of their presence.
It didn't take long before he noticed footprints, albeit faint.
He surged toward the place, Margaret struggling to keep up with him.
He got there in a few seconds, immediately activating Protocol.
"You're mine, ghost"
