"Tomb? The Hero shouldn't have a tomb. No one would dare enter the canyon to build one for him," Morvain suddenly said at that moment
Daniel and Drael exchanged a glance, both frowning at the same time. They had seen that tomb with their own eyes, had even entered it, and fought against the hero's corpse that had turned into a monster.
There was no way all of that was just an illusion, right? Or maybe that tomb didn't belong to the hero at all, and they had just made a wrong assumption?
However, Daniel was certain that the tomb really belonged to the hero, he could tell that just from the headless statue.
"So who built the tomb for him?" Drael grumbled, clearly not expecting such a headache.
"Not just that, there's also the matter of those Forgotten Echoes. We can only assume that the hero did something that made his followers hate him with all their hearts," Daniel added.
"Maybe only the Grand Priest himself knows the answers to those questions."
"Right. Seems like we'll have to talk to the Grand Priest directly after all."
"But before that, we need to shake the people's faith and weaken that so-called divine power," Daniel reminded them of their main plan.
"So right now, the hero's reputation among the people is terrible, right? And that's because of the false rumors spread by the Grand Priest?" Drael looked at Morvain and asked.
"That's right. Among the people, the hero is now mostly known as the Evil. Over the years, the Grand Priest kept spreading fear under that name to keep people obedient. In fact, tomorrow, a new wave of rumors is supposed to spread, saying that the Evil has returned," Morvain answered calmly without hesitation.
"Why would the Grand Priest spread such a story right after the temple was attacked?" Drael asked, confused.
"He wants to take advantage of the situation. By increasing the people's fear, he strengthens their faith. When people are afraid, they turn to their god. He wants to use that to his benefit," Daniel replied lazily. The Grand Priest's scheme was far too obvious to him.
Morvain nodded in agreement, confirming that the Grand Priest truly planned to do that.
"This is a perfect opportunity. We can use this situation and slowly destroy the people's faith."
"So, you want me to spread different rumors?" Morvain asked respectfully.
"Of course not. Spread the same rumors about the Evil's return among the people. I want them to be afraid first. Make the rumors even more exaggerated if you can. The more they fear, the better," Daniel explained.
"But isn't that a bad idea? That would actually help the Grand Priest's goal. The power of faith would increase," Morvain asked, still confused. He couldn't understand Daniel's reasoning.
Even Drael looked at Daniel with some confusion, though suddenly he seemed to realize something and burst into laughter.
Looks like he understood Daniel's plan.
"No, just do what I said. When the people are afraid enough, I want you to spread waves of doubt among them. Make them think. Make them question everything."
"Why would the Evil return after all these years? Why would he only attack the temple? What was his reason for attacking it? Wasn't it the people who defeated him? Shouldn't he be taking revenge on them instead? Were the events of that year even real?"
"I want you to make them start doubting the truth that the Grand Priest created. Make them slowly realize that everything that happened back then was just a setup, a trap," Daniel said.
"But will the people really believe that? Their faith is too strong for such a thing," Morvain still sounded uncertain.
"Believe? I don't want them to believe. Just doubting is enough. That doubt will slowly grow bigger and bigger, until it turns into conviction."
"Still, I think we'll need some evidence. Without proof, it'll be hard to pull this off," Drael said suddenly.
"I've already thought of that. Why do you think I came to the most beloved priest?" Daniel laughed, making both of them fall silent.
"I want you to create a diary or some old writings, something that talks about the truth behind the hero and the setup, and how much guilt you feel about it."
"That's not hard to do, but how would we get it into the people's hands? The Grand Priest will notice and stop it," Morvain asked, shaking his head.
"We'll spread it ourselves and get it to the people. We'll say that your followers delivered it as your final wish," Daniel said lazily. He didn't like explaining everything in detail.
"Final wish? Wait, do you mean he's going to kill himself?" Drael asked, confused at first, then burst into laughter.
"Exactly. If he kills himself, the impact among the people will be much greater," Daniel confirmed. Morvain was already dead anyway, and what was controlling his body was just a thread of Daniel's consciousness.
Even if he were to die again, it wouldn't matter in the slightest. And since his death could actually help Daniel, why not?
"I thought you were planning to use him as a spy," Drael shrugged.
"Spy? I don't need spies. That fool can't do anything against me. Any plan is meaningless in front of absolute power. The Grand Priest himself is nothing more than an ant to me. The only problem is that divine power protecting the temple," Daniel replied mockingly.
"Got it," Drael nodded, and as expected, Morvain accepted the order without the slightest hint of resistance.
"Good. The plan starts tomorrow. You can go now. I'll tell you the rest of the schedule later."
Morvain nodded and left the room. The two of them also stood up, said goodbye to Merina, and returned to their quarters.
The girl wanted to ask a lot of questions, but Drael told her that she'd get her answers tomorrow. After all, she was still useful.
As they calmly returned to their residence, they didn't know that an unknown group was already approaching the city.
