Hearing this, Liu Yunxi snapped to attention. She hurriedly sat up in bed and started straightening her clothes. With her help, they quickly tidied their disheveled attire.

Then, they both sat up straight and began to seriously discuss matters concerning the wasteland. Just as they started to speak, the door was suddenly pushed open, and a frantic Hu Jing rushed in.

When Liu Ergou saw Hu Jing, he barely reacted, merely glancing at her from the corner of his eye.

"What do you want, Hu Jing?"

Facing Liu Ergou's question, Hu Jing replied, panting heavily, "What else could it be? Something huge happened at the wasteland, and you didn't even tell me!"

"You know my corn is planted in that field!" she exclaimed, taking a few more heavy breaths. "Phew... I was in the city for the past couple of days getting corn seeds, so I wasn't home! I heard people talking about it the moment I got back to the village. When I heard what happened, it scared me to death!"

Hearing Hu Jing's words, Liu Ergou remained impassive and simply nodded.

"Right, it was quite a mess earlier," he said. "But it's fine now. If there's nothing else, you should go home and get some rest."

With that, Liu Ergou gestured for her to leave, leaving Hu Jing completely dumbfounded.

Staring at him, she wracked her brain but couldn't understand why his attitude had suddenly become so cold. She was genuinely concerned about the wasteland.

As Liu Ergou watched Hu Jing stand there silently, he couldn't help but frown.

Why hasn't she left yet? If it weren't for her, I could be having a much deeper conversation with Liu Yunxi. Her arrival interrupted everything. I already told her to leave, so why is she just standing there with that look on her face?

Just as Liu Ergou's agitation grew, Hu Jing suddenly spoke up. "Er Gou, you don't think the trouble Wu Dahu caused had something to do with me, do you?"

Her question took Liu Ergou by surprise. What does she mean by that? His face creased into another frown.

Seeing his expression, Hu Jing became even more convinced of her assumption and immediately began to explain.

"Er Gou, I really have nothing to do with that Wu Dahu! I just went to the city to get seeds. Planting season is right around the corner, so I have to start sowing! I was going to have them delivered, but the express service was too slow and I was in a hurry, so I went to get them myself! I..."

Watching the babbling Hu Jing, Liu Ergou's patience wore thin. I never said she was involved with Wu Dahu, yet here she is, explaining herself.

"When did I ever say I suspected you were in cahoots with Wu Dahu? That's all in your head! The only reason I'm annoyed is that you interrupted my conversation with Liu Yunxi!"

As soon as he said this, the chattering Hu Jing fell silent, a puzzled expression on her face.

"Huh? Er Gou, are you telling the truth?"

Liu Ergou nodded. "Of course, I am! Why would I lie to you? I was just discussing this morning's problem at the wasteland with Liu Yunxi."

At this, Liu Ergou discreetly shot Liu Yunxi a look, and she immediately understood.

"Yes, you know what happened this morning. That was just a small incident," Liu Yunxi chimed in. "However, that little episode made me realize there's a problem with the wasteland's security. Er Gou and I were just discussing it."

Hearing this, Hu Jing finally let out a long sigh of relief. "Ah, so that's what it was! It seems I was overthinking things." She caught her breath for a moment and then turned to leave. "Alright, since everything's fine, I'll head back. I've still got things to do!"

With that, Hu Jing left.

Watching her figure retreat into the distance, Liu Ergou finally sighed in relief. "Phew, that Hu Jing."

"She really has an overactive imagination," he muttered. "When did I ever say she was colluding with Wu Dahu? If she were really in cahoots with him, a guy like Wu Dahu would have eaten her alive. She wouldn't be here talking to me!"

At his side, Liu Yunxi couldn't help but cover her mouth and giggle. "Hahaha, alright, Er Gou, don't be angry!"

The moment she finished speaking, Liu Ergou suddenly pulled her into his embrace once more.

"Yun Xi, now that there's no one else around, shouldn't we continue what we were doing?" he whispered, reaching a hand toward her again.

This time, however, his hand was only halfway there before Liu Yunxi gently pushed it down.

This left Liu Ergou very confused. What does she mean by this?

Seeing his puzzled expression, Liu Yunxi smiled. "Er Gou, why are you always thinking about that sort of thing? Honestly, I just thought of something."

Hearing this, Er Gou frowned. "Oh? What is it?"

"It's about the wasteland," Liu Yunxi said immediately. "Didn't I just mention it? Our security is lacking. What if something like this happens again in the future?"

Her words made Liu Ergou fall silent. Seeing him quiet, she said no more, simply giving him a kiss before getting up to leave.

"Er Gou, think about it. I have to go; there's something I need to handle."

With that, Liu Yunxi started to walk away.

Seeing her leave, Liu Ergou abandoned his thoughts and hurriedly got up to follow her. "Yun Xi, I'll walk you home! Wait for me!"

Soon, they were walking side-by-side back to her house.

Liu Ergou stood at her doorstep, about to say something, but before the words could leave his mouth, a cry for help reached their ears.

"Help! Somebody, help!"

At first, Liu Yunxi and Liu Ergou thought they had misheard and didn't pay it any mind.

Just then, however, the cry came again, this time more pitiful than before.

"Help me, help me! Is anybody there!"

Listening to the direction of the cry, Liu Ergou's expression changed drastically.

"That's... Liu Jingming's house?!"

Liu Yunxi nodded and prepared to rush over with him, but before she could take a step, Liu Ergou stopped her.
