Chapter 251: 002: My dear younger brother
Frost Cold Town, Valen Knight Manor.
Valen Knight Manor in Frost Cold Town is a well-known knight farm in the area. It is famous for being the residence of a highly respected knight, Knight Gerald Valen.
This knight’s life has been nothing short of legendary. Born a peasant, he once saved the daughter of the Bayn family by chance, earning the favor of the late old baron. He even fell in love with the baron’s youngest daughter, eventually becoming part of the Bayn family… These tales have become cherished legends recounted far and wide.
As a knight, Gerald never demonstrated exceptional talent. Throughout his life, he remained merely a low-level knight, without any remarkable achievements on the battlefield.
However, his kindhearted nature set him apart. Unlike many who flaunt their success after rising from humble beginnings, he remained humble even after becoming a knight of high status. He would do his best to assist even the humblest of farmers seeking his help.
This enduring humility over decades earned him an outstanding reputation in Frost Cold Town. Everyone who mentioned him, even the most spiteful gossips, would never utter a word of slander behind his back.
At this moment,
The Valen Knight Manor was packed with crowds of people, all residents from nearby. Others continued to arrive from all directions, their faces heavy with grief and sorrow.
Because… this rare and good-hearted knight had reached the end of his life.
“Oh, gods, I beseech you, help him!”
“Please delay death’s arrival; we can’t bear to see him leave…”
“Why… Why must this happen…”
Soft sobs echoed throughout the manor. Although most visitors could not see Knight Gerald himself, they still silently prayed for him.
On the second floor of the castle, just outside Knight Gerald’s bedroom.
In the hallway, Gerald’s only daughter, Lilith, stood with slightly reddened eyes, greeting one guest after another who had come to visit her father.
She no longer displayed the mischievousness and rebellion of her younger years. Clad in a formal gown and with her hair elegantly tied up, her demeanor was now dignified and composed. Every gesture and tone reflected the grace of a highly respectable lady.
“Thank you so much for coming. My father… he is unable to get up to greet you. I deeply apologize.”
“Yes, understood. We truly appreciate your concern.”
“I will pass along your regards to my father. Thank you again…”
She tirelessly welcomed wave after wave of visitors, her busy schedule leaving no respite. Though deeply sorrowful, she could only force a smile and exchange polite formalities—behaviors she had once strongly resisted and despised. Somehow, over time, they had become second nature to her.
Lilith couldn’t even recall when this transformation began. Was it after returning from that perilous journey? Or after marrying Knight Harak?
“The baron is here!”
“Madam, the baron has arrived, and he has brought along a doctor to examine the master.”
At this moment, a servant came forward to make the announcement.
Lilith quickly pulled her scattered thoughts together and, alongside her husband Knight Harak, moved to greet their visitors.
Proper etiquette dictated that the lord’s arrival should be greeted downstairs. However, Baron Bayn moved briskly, and by the time Lilith reached the staircase, the baron was already ascending.
Several guards accompanied the baron, but he instructed them to stay at the foot of the stairs, bringing only one young man up with him.
Lilith and her husband immediately stepped forward and bowed respectfully. “My lord.”
Baron Bayn waved his hand, getting straight to the point. “There’s no need for formalities. How is Gerald doing now?”
Lilith’s eyes turned red immediately, tears threatening to spill.
But she held back, taking a deep breath before honestly replying, “The doctor has visited… The situation isn’t promising… They’ve said… he may not last beyond the next couple of days…”
Baron Bayn reassured her, “Don’t lose hope; it’s only because the local doctors lack skill.”
He paused, stepping aside to introduce the young man beside him. “This is Lord Merlin, a doctor I brought back from the Royal Capital. Don’t be fooled by his youth; his medical skills are exceptional. He will surely be able to cure your father.”
“Thank you for going through so much trouble, my lord.” Lilith managed a faint smile. Though she knew it was likely futile, the baron’s goodwill required a show of gratitude.
She then turned her gaze toward the young man. “You…”
But she faltered mid-sentence.
This was because the young man’s appearance felt inexplicably familiar, as if she had seen him somewhere before. “Have we… have we met before?”
She asked instinctively, and as she spoke, memories from many years ago began to resurface.
Just as the fragmented recollections were about to align with the figure in her mind, the young man’s voice broke the silence: “I once traveled far and wide with my teacher, providing medical assistance. Perhaps we crossed paths somewhere along the way; it wouldn’t be surprising.”
His voice carried an indescribable magic, and Lilith’s initial doubts quickly dissipated as he spoke.
The young man continued, “Please, take me to see him.”
Lilith nodded. “Alright.”
The group moved toward the bedroom, with the baron following closely beside the young doctor.
Upon closer observation, one might notice an unusual degree of respect displayed by Baron Bayn toward this young man, who could almost have been his grandson. His every word and action carried a hint of deference, bordering on fawning.
However, the atmosphere was so heavy with sorrow that no one paid attention to these subtleties.
They arrived at the door to Knight Gerald’s bedroom, where everyone stopped in the hallway. Only Lilith and the young doctor entered the room.
Inside, several servants stood watch by the bed. The aged Knight Gerald lay upon it, his eyes tightly shut as he floated in and out of consciousness. His breathing was faint, barely audible.
Lilith approached the bed, gently shaking her father while calling out:
“Father! Father, please wake up.”
“The baron has brought you a doctor.”
“He’s from the Royal Capital.”
Her final words seemed to stir something within him. Upon hearing the phrase “from the Royal Capital,” the previously unconscious Knight Gerald suddenly opened his eyes wide.
He turned his head, his gaze lightly sweeping across the room.
It seemed to be an unremarkable glance, but in that fleeting moment, his eyes locked onto the figure of Lynch standing by the bedside.
The wrinkles on his aged face blossomed into a radiant smile. “You’re back! You’ve finally come back!”
“My little brother Lynch!”
“All these years, where have you been wandering?!”
