Xiao Heng asked, “What treasure is inside that medicine chest? Why does Sword Lodge want it?”

Li Jiangping’s breath was more shallow than deep. “I… I don’t know… it was the Sect Leader’s order…”

Shangguan Qing leaned closer to his bratty younger brother and asked, “Is he telling the truth?”

“It should be the truth.” Xiao Heng’s eyes sharpened. “Young Gentleman Ming Yue is the Sect Leader’s son, yet he knew nothing about the medicine chest. That proves this matter is indeed top secret, known to very few.”

Shangguan Qing glanced at Li Jiangping. “So what do we do with him? Kill him or——”

“Leave him for Chang Jing.” Xiao Heng said calmly.

Shangguan Qing looked at Li Jiangping’s severed fingers, blood still flowing, and even his own fingers felt the pain.

Though the scene was cruel, why did he find himself a little impressed with his bratty younger brother?

……

The one who had abducted Duke An was a master of qinggong. Combined with his familiarity with the terrain, almost no one could catch up with him.

Unfortunately for him, the one chasing was the overlord of the skies, Little Nine, the gyrfalcon. Even if he had grown wings himself, he could never outfly it.

He wanted to shoot down the bird circling endlessly overhead, but it flew too high, and he had no bow. With sword qi alone, he could not even touch a single feather.

Although Hidden Sword Manor was a small sect, its location was exquisite, nestled in a scenic mountain area. At the foot of the mountain was the sect gate, guarded by disciples, who were now replaced with Sword Lodge disciples.

One had to climb over a hundred stone steps to reach the sect compound halfway up the mountain.

Gu Jiao pursued all the way to the mountain foot. Perhaps that expert had already warned them, for the two disciples on guard were ready, each drawing his treasured sword and staring at Gu Jiao with full alertness.

“Who goes there!”

One of them shouted.

Gu Jiao didn’t waste words with them and went straight in for the kill.

Ahead were stone steps, so the Black Wind King could go no further. Gu Jiao sent it into the forest to wait while she herself gripped the red-tasseled spear and fought her way up toward the manor.

It might have looked like she was cutting through them easily, but it was not because they were weak. In fact, each disciple’s strength was equivalent to that of a Tian Lang.

It was her strength that had risen greatly. As for how much exactly, she could not yet judge, for she had not met an opponent strong enough to force her to use her full power.

“Brazen fiend! How dare you injure disciples of our Sword Lodge!”

Just as Gu Jiao was about to step into the manor, a man in gray, wearing a silver mask, swept out of the night with sword in hand, flying toward her.

The aura he gave off was clearly far stronger than that of the disciples from before.

This was a true expert.

His sword struck Gu Jiao’s red-tasseled spear; sparks flew as metal clashed, ringing out with crisp, piercing sounds. Gu Jiao felt a violent shock travel up her arm.

She was forced back several steps in one breath.

She narrowed her eyes, fixing them on the man.

Judging by his voice, he was a middle-aged man, but his figure was lithe and vigorous like a youth, the muscles of his arms and chest taut and powerful beneath his robes.

This man was not only a body-forging expert, but also possessed deep internal force. From him Gu Jiao sensed a killing intent no less than An Hun’s.

A year ago, she would never have been An Hun’s match.

But now, she had the strength to face him!

Gu Jiao tightened her grip on the red-tasseled spear, seeking out her opponent’s weakness.

The man was briefly stunned, clearly not expecting that under such a vast disparity in power, the other party would show not a shred of fear.

“Who are you?”

This young brat had caught his attention.

Gu Jiao said, “Who I am, you can go ask your fellow disciples in the underworld!”

“You’re a woman?” The man was startled again, then looked upon Gu Jiao’s beautiful face shining in the moonlight and murmured, “No wonder.”

He had wondered how any man could be so beautiful.

Gu Jiao glanced around. There was more than one ferry nearby. If she were delayed here, Duke An might be taken through another gate at any moment.

She wasted no more words and raised her red-tasseled spear, charging straight at him!

……

Meanwhile, Xiao Heng and Shangguan Qing’s group were surrounded halfway along the road by Sword Lodge disciples.

The dark guards shielded the two young masters in the center. Shangguan Qing held a firelance in his arms, standing back-to-back with Xiao Heng as they waited for the right moment.

He frowned. “Just how many Sword Lodge people came this time? How did they even sneak into the State of Zhao?”

Xiao Heng kept a vigilant eye on the encircling disciples. “The caravans, the underground fighting arenas, the Hidden Night Sect’s marriage proposal envoy. Any of those could have been their way in.”

Shangguan Qing gnashed his teeth. “That bastard Li truly deserves a thousand deaths!”

Xiao Heng said, “He was just a pawn. The true mastermind is the Sword Lodge Sect Leader.”

“Kill them!”

At the leading disciple’s order, the Sword Lodge disciples charged toward the dark guards of Marquis Xuanping Estate.

The two sides quickly clashed. In single combat, the dark guards were no match for the Sword Lodge disciples, but they outnumbered them three to one, and for the moment were able to pin them down!

Xiao Heng seized Shangguan Qing’s wrist, taking advantage of the chaos to slip into the nearby forest.

The sounds of battle faded behind them. Shangguan Qing let out a quiet breath of relief and asked, “Where do we go now?”

“Li Jiangping said east. Ahead is east.” Xiao Heng replied.

“Then let’s hurry!” Shangguan Qing said quickly.

But after only a few steps, a sharp crack sounded beneath Shangguan Qing’s foot, followed by a searing pain shooting up from his ankle. He stumbled instantly, crashing forward onto the ground.

Xiao Heng stopped at once, turned back, and walked to him, crouching down to ask, “What happened?”

Shangguan Qing propped himself up on the ground and sat up. He did not forget to pick up the firelance that had fallen to the side. Cold sweat poured down his face as he said, “My foot… it feels like something clamped onto it…”

Xiao Heng lifted his hem to take a look. His brows knit tightly together as he said, “It’s a beast trap. Probably set here by nearby villagers. Endure it for a moment, I’ll pry it open. Hand me the firelance.”

Shangguan Qing asked in confusion, “What do you need the firelance for?”

Xiao Heng looked at the beast trap that had embedded itself into Shangguan Qing’s flesh and said, “Only the firelance is hard enough.”

Shangguan Qing hugged the firelance tightly. “It, it’ll break.”

Xiao Heng raised his eyes to look at him and said, “If the firelance breaks, I can make you a new one. But if your foot is crippled, I can’t do anything about that.”

Shangguan Qing, heart aching, reluctantly handed over the firelance to his annoying younger brother. With great reluctance, he said, “Then be gentle… not with me, but with it. She’s my wife, don’t hurt my wife.”

Xiao Heng: “…”

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
