Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
The army pressed onward.
This minor incident did little to disrupt their progress, except for the disheartened young Black Wind Cavalry horse.
Dragging its hooves, it trudged along at the rear of the formation, looking utterly dispirited. It wasn’t until Gu Jiao placed the medicinal herbs she had gathered along the way onto its back that it finally perked up again!
The ascent up the mountain had taken them two days, but the descent was much quicker.
In just one day, they successfully reached the mountain’s base.
Mu Qingchen, witnessing this feat, could not help but marvel. “You really did it in just three days.”
The journey had been grueling, draining the soldiers and their warhorses alike.
Fatigue weighed heavily upon them all, yet they had only a single day to rest. Once tomorrow passed, they would have to prepare for the siege.
At the dead of night—
The Black Wind Cavalry scouts that Gu Jiao had sent out finally returned.
At this moment, Gu Jiao was sitting under a large tree, discussing battle strategies with the six commanding officers. Mu Qingchen was present as well.
“Speak.” Gu Jiao looked at the scout and ordered.
The scout cupped his hands and reported, “Commander, I bring both good news and bad news.”
Gu Jiao, holding a tree branch she had been using to map out the terrain, glanced at him and said, “Start with the bad news.”
The scout hesitated briefly before responding, “The bad news is that we’ve lost three more cities. Two of them surrendered voluntarily to the Han Family and the Nangong Family, while the third was captured by the State of Jin’s army.”
Gu Jiao’s tree branch traced a mark over Yanmen Pass. “So the State of Jin’s army has crossed our borders… That means Tianshan Pass has completely fallen.”
The scout’s voice was heavy with grief. “Yes, Commander.”
“And the good news?” Gu Jiao prompted.
The scout replied, “The good news is that the grain supplies in Quyang City are running low. Two nearby counties are currently transporting provisions to Quyang City, and they are expected to arrive at the northern and eastern gates by tomorrow night.”
They had been struggling to figure out a way to capture Quyang City. Its fortified walls made it an extremely defensible position—easy to hold, yet difficult to breach.
To make matters worse, they were a cavalry unit advancing ahead of the main force, lacking infantry and the siege weapons necessary to break through the gates.
What would have already been a formidable challenge had now escalated into an almost impossible task.
The scout’s intelligence, however, had arrived like a godsend, an unexpected stroke of luck at the most crucial moment.
Cheng Fugui said, “We can ambush their supply convoy. Without provisions, they’ll be trapped inside the city, starving. They will have no choice but to come out and reclaim the supplies, and that will be our chance to strike.”
Gu Jiao nodded. “Yes, that makes sense.”
However, if the grain was set to arrive tomorrow night, that meant their attack plan would have to be moved forward.
An hour later, the scouts went out again to track the movement of the supply convoy. This time, they returned with news that the grain was being transported overnight.
This information carried two crucial implications.
First, Quyang City’s food shortage was already dire; it could not even hold out for another day.
Second, the supplies would reach Quyang by no later than noon tomorrow.
Their attack would have to be moved up by another half a day!
For the Black Wind Cavalry, who had been traveling relentlessly for over ten days, crossing mountains and rough terrain for three of those days, this was an immense challenge.
“How many enemy troops are escorting the supplies?” Gu Jiao asked.
The scout replied, “Five thousand on each route.”
Gu Jiao mused, “That must mean the grain supply is substantial… for them to deploy five thousand soldiers as escorts.”
Her Black Wind Cavalry force of fifty thousand included supply units and warhorses. The actual number of combat-ready cavalry was only twenty thousand.
With ten thousand enemy soldiers guarding the supply route, it did not seem like an overwhelming obstacle.
The real challenge, however, was not just stealing the grain—it was the massive Nangong Army that would pour out of the city to reclaim it.
That was an army of eighty thousand men!
They would have to engage in consecutive battles without time to recover, facing nearly a hundred thousand enemy troops with only twenty thousand cavalry. It was like throwing eggs against a rock!
The scout, full of apprehension, hesitated before asking, “Commander… are we really going to fight?”
Gu Jiao clenched her fists, her gaze sharpening like a blade. “Fight! Pass down my orders—rest well tonight. No need to rise early tomorrow. In the afternoon—follow me to siege the city!”
……
"Crazy, crazy, crazy! Absolutely insane!"
Zhao Dengfeng rushed into Wen Renchong's tent and kicked the sleeping Wen Renchong a few times. "Wake up! Wake up! The young commander has lost his mind!"
"Then let him be crazy." Wen Renchong turned over impatiently and continued sleeping.
Zhao Dengfeng was dumbfounded. "No, what’s wrong with you? Have you been hammering iron for so many years that you’ve knocked your brain silly? I’m telling you, the young commander has gone mad! He plans to attack the city tomorrow afternoon! And not just one battle—he’s fighting two! Can you believe it? Do you know how many troops we have? Do you know how many troops are stationed in Quyang City? Do you know how exhausted we are after this long march, while the Quyang garrison has been resting, waiting for us? Can we even fight like this?"
"It's not like we haven't done it before." Wen Renchong replied indifferently.
Zhao Dengfeng was stunned for a long moment before realizing that Wen Renchong was referring to the battle years ago, when Xuanyuan Li had led twenty thousand cavalry to rout an eighty-thousand-strong army of the State of Jin.
The problem was, at that time, the Jin army had marched for a thousand miles and was utterly exhausted, while their side had been well-rested and ready for battle.
Their combat strength and morale had been at their peak back then.
Now, how could anything they had compared to the Black Wind Cavalry of that time?
"If Grand Commander Xuanyuan were still here, there might be a chance of victory. But our young commander... tsk tsk." Zhao Dengfeng was extremely pessimistic.
"Why did I even come?"
"I must have gone mad too."
"I'm just here to die."
"I thought I could at least fight a few more battles and kill a few more Jin and Liang dogs before I went. But now, great! Before I even get to them, I'm going to be wiped out by the Nangong Family’s army first! Just my luck—"
Wen Renchong was utterly annoyed by his ranting.
Having spent more time with Gu Jiao, he knew that this young commander was not as incapable as she appeared to be. But to be honest, even he didn’t dare to place much hope on tomorrow’s battle.
Was this truly a case of perishing before even setting out?
Gu Jiao, however, had an exceptionally strong mindset. Even in the face of a battle the next day that seemed completely unwinnable, she still lay down and fell asleep without hesitation.
She slept through the night, dreamless.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
