Chapter 1449: The Sovereign of Death - Part 2

Chapter 1449: The Sovereign of Death - Part 2

The lanky undead zombie rushed at him with whips of death, both in smell and effect. Arthur had to keep dodging, which he found to be relatively easy given the creature’s size and failing muscles.

In the meantime, Arthur attempted to use everything he had learned — runes, sigils, or even wrath. None of them seemed to work at the moment, which he assumed would be the doing of the Path.

"I do have one thing that would help me," Arthur muttered before he raised his hand. The Breaker Insignia was glowing on his skin. "Let’s hope that this does something."

The monster jumped him, its arms and legs outstretched in such a way that Arthur had no room for escape. Instead of fleeing again, Arthur turned his hand into a fist. A spherical force field appeared around his hand, which he used to punch the creature in the chest.

The creature screamed and flew away with a resounding boom. Arthur noticed that a giant hole appeared on its chest, and it was quickly spreading to the rest of its body. It withered on the ground before the monster turned to nothing under the effects of his punch.

"The Breaker Insignia lives up to its name," Arthur muttered with a whistle as he looked at the glowing insignia on the back of his hand. "I wonder if this is the power of annihilation, or something else entirely."

Arthur was about to resume his journey when a new window popped out.

[You have defeated a lesser undead monster.]

[You have obtained 1 Sovereign Point]

Arthur was surprised to see points being used inside the path as well, similar to how the Scholar Guardian used them. Arthur tried to access the interface to spend the points inside the path.

Nothing happened.

"I guess I was wrong," Arthur muttered. "Maybe this is more about points I can spend after finishing the trial."

Arthur resumed his march toward the nearby town. He finally saw humans, but they were taller than him by at least two feet. It explained why the undead was tall and lanky. These humans were easily taller than him.

"I guess each world affects our evolution differently," Arthur muttered as he watched them from afar. They were hunting a giant panther, and the fight was growing ferocious.

Arthur noticed that none of them used abilities. They fought using strange techniques that allowed them to avoid being killed and deliver deadly blows.

After ensuring that he could survive if things went wrong, Arthur approached the group. They were wary until he started talking.

"I’m sorry for bothering you during your hunt, but can you guide me to the nearest town?" Arthur asked as he approached them with a smile.

They looked at each other and then back at Arthur.

"What is a dwarf doing here?" one of them asked. It was a woman that had more muscles than Arthur himself. "You aren’t allowed to leave the caves."

"How can a dwarf look like that?" another man said while rolling his eyes at her. "Look at him. He barely has any meat on him! This might be one of those malnourished tribes."

Arthur chuckled as he heard their discussion. His height had grown to be over six feet ever since he began raising his stats. However, compared to them, he was indeed no taller than a dwarf.

"I mean no harm," Arthur said. "I’m just a traveler looking for a job that pays enough to live. Can you please guide me to the nearest town?"

"You can help us carry these kills back to the town," the woman said.

"I’ll be happy to help."

Arthur was glad that he wasn’t attacked like before, but this time he’d make sure to keep his mouth shut about his real objective. He marched toward the panther and attempted to lift it. He used both hands, but realized something was amiss...

The panther was too light.

Arthur raised the entire creature with a single hand. Thanks to the ropes that the giants used to tie its limbs together, carrying it made things easier.

"You’re a strong little fella," a bearded giant said with surprise that was shared by the others. "It would take two of us to carry that beast, but you do it with a single hand. Impressive."

Arthur didn’t know what to reply to that compliment, but realized that he could barely feel the weight of the monster in his hand. He could carry a mountain of these corpses before he began growing tired.

It should be his stats.

This world was lower than his, and it made sense that his body would be stronger than what’s normal for this world. Arthur confirmed his suspicions when he overheard the others talk like they were the strongest in their village.

According to the giants who dressed like medieval hunters, the valley was separated into different sections: villages, towns, and then the city.

"Who governs the city?" Arthur asked.

The others grew pale.

The woman answered him. "I understand that you’re a nomad, but there is one thing that shouldn’t be mentioned here in the valley. That would be the man ruling over it."

"You mean the Sovereign of Death?"

Arthur’s question, which he raised on purpose to see their reactions, made the others stop dead in their tracks. He turned to see their faces painted with fear and horror.

"Don’t say that name," the woman said with a scowl. "If a single undead hears you say it, we’re going to die before we make it back."

"I met one of those," Arthur said with a frown. "What are they?"

"Soldiers of the Sovereign. If you don’t bother them, then they are harmless. Some of them are even chatty. But if you talk about the Sovereign of Death, especially if you ill-mouth him, then it would be their mission to make you join them."

"I get it now," Arthur said with a smile. "I won’t talk about it anymore."

The others nodded and they resumed their journey. Arthur didn’t say anything, but made his own conclusions. Whoever this Sovereign was, he was the root cause of the people’s suffering in this place.

Killing him should be the objective.
