Chapter 3716: A Sentinel’s Task
The strength of even the tiniest bit of Divine Qi was so great that, with only a fraction of a fraction of their entire Qi being Divine Qi, they were able to completely fight off the suppression for more than a few hours with ease.
It reached a point where it wasn’t until halfway into the 7th day that the first of the remaining 11 people was knocked out. As soon as that person fell, it was as if a domino had been kicked, and 3 more people were taken out one after another.
The ones who were knocked out were people in the Immortal Spirit 5th realm, who had only a tiny bit of Divine Qi. Compared to them, people with an Immortal Spirit 6th realm cultivation base had a significantly higher amount of Divine Qi, so those people would now last for much longer.
Alex understood that they too would be knocked out soon, but it would take many more hours.
And he was correct. 3 more people were knocked out at the end of the 7th day, leaving behind only 4 on the platform.
Fang Xianhai had stopped moving for a while now, and Han Yifei had joined him in that as well. The other woman who was still with them, however, began showing signs of losing soon after the 8th day began.
She focused on herself the entire time, holding on for as long as she could, only to lose 4 hours into the day. She sighed in frustration, watching the three who had managed to last much longer than her, and left.
Now, only three remained on top of the platform, none of whom appeared ready to leave.
Fang Xianhai’s eyes moved toward Alex once the woman left, scanning him with his gaze. "I don’t think we’ve been introduced before. I am Fang Xianhai. May I ask who you are, friend?"
Alex looked toward the man, wondering if he should give true information or not. Considering the amount of trouble he would get Ronron and the rest in if he confirmed who he was to the man, he decided to hide his identity for a while.
"You do not know me," Alex said. "And I want us to stay that way for now."
The man raised an eyebrow in some surprise. "If that is your wish, then I understand. But may I ask how you aren’t struggling despite your cultivation base?" he asked. "Are you using an artifact, perhaps?"
"We cannot use any external artifacts," Yifei spoke up from the side, turning toward Alex. "If he were using something like that, he would have been disqualified already."
"True," Fang Xianhai said. "Then I wonder how he is performing so well. Are you concealing your cultivation base, perhaps?"
Alex gave a small smile. "I’m sure you will land upon the truth if you continue at it."
The man didn’t appear angry despite Alex’s response. He simply looked away since he wasn’t getting any answer, focusing on himself.
The woman kept an eye on Alex. While her competition was supposed to be with Fang Xianhai, she couldn’t ignore the fact that Alex was doing just as well as them, perhaps even better.
That just seemed entirely impossible. It was possible that he was hiding his cultivation base, but it would be very difficult to hide it while fighting off the aura. There would be fluctuations that they would notice if he was straining himself.
Since they didn’t notice anything, the only answer was that he wasn’t concealing his cultivation base. Then, if the Immortal Transcendent 5th realm was truly his cultivation base, the only other way for him to continue with them was for him to have a very high body cultivation.
But that seemed entirely impossible as well.
How could a person possibly improve their body cultivation to such a high degree while having a much weaker cultivation base? It would make sense if he was older, which would imply that he wasn’t a fast cultivator, so he had to have spent a lot of his time body cultivating.
But since Alex looked no older than a young man in his mid to late 20s, he was clearly someone talented.
Every little bit of common sense that Yifei tried to apply to Alex seemed to shatter the moment it fell upon him. Something wasn’t right at all.
As she thought of different possibilities, one came to her mind.
"Are you a Sentinel?" Yifei asked suddenly. "If you are, you can’t be here."
Xianhai’s eyes widened slightly as he turned around. "A Sentinel? I hadn’t thought of that. Are you a Sentinel?"
Alex blinked for a moment, realizing that another group had mistaken him for this thing that he didn’t know about.
"I do not know what that is," Alex said. "I’ve been called one before, but I don’t believe I am. Can you tell me what a Sentinel is supposed to be?"
"Are you not one?" Yifei asked. "Did you not come here as a guard for someone?"
"A guard?" Alex asked as he grew slightly curious. "I did. Is that a Sentinel?"
"Of course," Yifei said, sounding rather exasperated. "Did they not explain to you that you can’t outperform the person you are protecting? It goes against the spirit of the secret realm entirely, as it takes away from the achievements of the others weaker than you."
"Is that so?" Alex asked, slowly beginning to understand what they were talking about.
"There must be a lot of Sentinels around then," he said.
"Quite a few, yes," Xianhai said. "It’s difficult for big families and sects to send in their juniors without some level of protection, after all."
"I see," Alex said as he nodded slowly.
"That’s why you should stop already," Yifei said. "Since the person you’re protecting already lost, you need to leave. Otherwise, how are we supposed to contend against Divinities?"
Alex smiled. "Well, then I have some good news for the two of you. I am not a Divinity," he told them. "And now that I understand what a Sentinel is, I can tell you that I am not that either."
