The Rise of Quetzalcoatl

Chapter 746: Progression in Interdimensional Travel (21)

Above, the Obsidian Fliers made coordinated dive attacks, screaming as they targeted helpless troops below. A jetpack soldier zipped into their midst, weaving through their erratic formations. One Flier lunged at him, its skeletal talons outstretched. He rotated his body mid-flight, narrowly avoiding the claws, and retaliated with a burst from his wrist-mounted plasma launcher. The shot shattered the creature's glowing core, sending its fragments tumbling through the air.

Two more soldiers coordinated to trap a diving Flier, one firing an energy net that tangled its wings, sending it spiraling downward. Before it could crash into the ground, a mage raised his hands, creating a field of force that crushed the trapped creature with a burst of energy.

Throughout the battle, the team relied heavily on coordinated maneuvers to avoid being overwhelmed. Soldiers in the rear provided covering fire, taking down monsters that slipped past the front lines. Mages rotated barrier spells and shockwaves to slow advancing waves, while snipers used high-ground vantage points to pick off priority targets.

"Shift formation! Focus the big ones!" the team leader barked as another Bruteskuller roared into the fray. A squad immediately broke off to deal with it, while the remaining soldiers held the line against the smaller creatures.

A Skrelch leapt at a soldier, its iridescent mandibles snapping wildly. The soldier crouched low, raising his energy shield just as the creature's maw came down. The impact reverberated through his arm, but he used the momentum to pivot, slamming the edge of the shield upward into the Skrelch's chin. As it recoiled, he drove his plasma-edged sword into its exposed thorax, the weapon emitting a hiss as it pierced through its shimmering exoskeleton.

Another soldier nearby engaged two Skrelches at once. She sidestepped as one lunged, its needle-like legs stabbing into the ground where she'd just stood. In one fluid motion, she swung her halberd in a wide arc, the blade cleaving through the creature's legs and sending it collapsing. She spun to face the second Skrelch, thrusting the weapon's shaft into its abdomen to force it back before finishing it with a downward strike that split its body in two.

The Warp Howlers darted unpredictably, phasing in and out of sight as they aimed to flank the defenders. One Howler lunged at a sniper on an elevated platform, but a soldier below anticipated its trajectory. He hurled a magnetic grenade, which detonated midair, locking the Howler in place with an electromagnetic field. The sniper capitalized on the opening, firing a precise energy shot that disintegrated the creature's glowing, circular mouth.

Another Warp Howler managed to phase through the front line, appearing behind a group of soldiers. It let out an ear-piercing howl, disorienting them momentarily. A mage soldier reacted swiftly, tracing a glowing rune in the air. The rune expanded into a barrier that repelled the creature backward. Before it could recover, a melee fighter dashed forward, dodging the creature's whip-like tail with a quick roll, and delivered a devastating upward slash with his energy axe, splitting the Howler in two.

The Crimson Wyrms coiled and lunged, their serpentine forms weaving through the chaos with unsettling speed. One Wyrm lunged at a soldier, its corrosive saliva sizzling as it splattered across the ground. The soldier rolled to the side, narrowly avoiding the spray, and unleashed a burst from his flamethrower. The intense heat forced the Wyrm to recoil, its translucent body writhing in pain.

Meanwhile, two soldiers worked in tandem to take down another Wyrm. One soldier distracted it by firing a barrage of energy rounds, forcing it to rear back and expose its glowing internal organs. The second soldier dashed forward with a spear-like weapon, driving it into the creature's chest with a powerful leap. As the Wyrm convulsed, she twisted the weapon, causing it to detonate with an energy pulse that obliterated the creature from within.

A Bruteskuller barreled through the battlefield, its massive form sending soldiers scattering. One team leader rallied his squad, directing them to surround the beast. "Hit the legs! Bring it down!" he shouted. The soldiers responded immediately, firing concentrated blasts at the creature's crystalline joints.

As the Bruteskuller staggered, a soldier equipped with a jetpack launched herself onto its back, planting an explosive charge between its glowing spikes. The charge detonated, sending shards of crystal flying and forcing the beast to collapse onto one knee. Another soldier rushed in, his electrified mace crackling as he delivered a powerful blow to the creature's head, shattering its molten eye slit.

Above, the Obsidian Fliers swooped in coordinated dives, their shrill screeches piercing the air. A jetpack soldier took to the skies, weaving through the aerial chaos. One Flier locked onto him, its skeletal talons outstretched. He twisted mid-flight, firing his plasma rifle at close range. The burst of energy struck the Flier's glowing core, sending it spiraling downward in a shower of obsidian fragments.

Two other Fliers converged on a mage soldier who stood on an elevated platform. She raised her staff, conjuring a swirling vortex of wind that disrupted their flight patterns. As they struggled to stabilize, ground soldiers took aim, their synchronized shots reducing the Fliers to glowing shards.

Despite the relentless waves, the soldiers maintained their composure, their teamwork a critical factor in preventing the horde from breaking through. Engineers deployed automated turrets that provided covering fire, targeting any creature that slipped past the front lines. Mages rotated barrier spells to fortify vulnerable points, while snipers prioritized eliminating the more dangerous monsters like Bruteskullers and Crimson Wyrms.

"Regroup on me!" the commander shouted, signaling a temporary shift in formation. Soldiers fell back into a tighter defensive line, allowing artillery units to unleash a devastating barrage that thinned the horde's numbers. The respite was brief but invaluable, giving the soldiers a moment to catch their breath and reassess their strategy.

The battlefield shifted as new, more powerful variants of the existing monsters began emerging from the ranks. Their appearances were monstrous exaggerations of their predecessors, each infused with an overwhelming intensity of power that made the air shimmer with menace. The soldiers adjusted their strategies, moving with calculated precision to counter these new threats.

The Skrelch Titan loomed over the battlefield, its iridescent exoskeleton reflecting the golden-red light of the alien sky. The air crackled with the bioelectricity emanating from its mandibles as it let out a screech that vibrated through the very bones of the soldiers. It advanced with surprising agility for its size, its reinforced legs driving deep into the ground with each step.

The Titan reared back, then lunged at the energy barrier protecting a cluster of soldiers. Its mandibles clamped onto the shimmering shield, discharging a surge of electricity that caused the barrier to waver and splinter before shattering completely. The soldiers scattered as the Titan thrust its spiked forelimb downward, narrowly missing a soldier who rolled out of the way at the last second.

Reacting quickly, another soldier, clad in a sleek, high-powered exosuit, activated the suit's thrusters and propelled himself toward the Titan's head. He twisted midair, delivering a devastating roundhouse kick to the side of its triangular face. The impact reverberated through the air, forcing the Titan to stagger, but it responded instantly. With a guttural screech, it swung its jagged forelimb in a horizontal arc, aiming to cleave the soldier in two. The soldier backflipped in a blur, landing safely out of range.

"Form up! It's vulnerable at the joints and underbelly!" shouted the squad leader, his voice cutting through the chaos.

The team fell into a tight formation, their movements synchronized. Two soldiers wielding grappling devices took the lead. With precision timing, they fired hooks that embedded into the Titan's front legs. The cables tightened, and with a coordinated tug, they pulled its legs forward, destabilizing the creature. It roared in frustration, its glowing compound eyes flashing wildly as it teetered.

A soldier armed with a pulse cannon dashed to the side, using the moment of instability to aim at the Titan's knee joint. With a deafening thud, the shot struck true, causing the joint to buckle. The Titan let out a keening wail as it toppled forward, its massive bulk crashing into the ground and sending up a cloud of dust and debris.

"Focus on the underbelly!" the commander barked.

A mage stepped forward, her hands glowing with concentrated energy. She muttered an incantation, and a shimmering, compressed sphere of power formed between her palms. With a forceful push, she launched the sphere at the Titan's exposed underbelly. The sphere impacted with a sound like thunder, erupting into a burst of energy that sent cracks spidering across the creature's iridescent armor.

As shards of its exoskeleton flew into the air, a sniper perched on an elevated position calibrated his energy rifle. He exhaled slowly, his crosshairs locked on the Titan's thorax, where the cracks glowed brightly. With a barely audible hum, he fired. The energy lance tore through the air, striking the precise weak point. The Titan convulsed, its mandibles releasing one last burst of electricity before its glowing eyes dimmed. Its massive frame collapsed, lifeless, to the ground.
