The Rise of Quetzalcoatl

Chapter 345: Nuala's Troubles (1)

I was taken through the lab and to the infirmary, where a nurse immediately began to inspect me.

"Is she alright?" Nuala asked, sitting next to my bed as I was fed a respirator, and a needle was injected into my right arm. "She just came back from the portal… so…"

"Yes, there are signs of DSS, but nowhere near as bad as the previous subject who went in there… it's mostly just internal damage, and the external damage is practically nothing. Only a few strains in her skin which we can fix up instantly…." The nurse said as she took out the needle upon injecting all the fluid into me.

"So, will she be fine?"

"Yes, she will. Just give me some space as I'll need to do an emergency surgery before I can actually use my healing powers… everyone, please leave the infirmary!" She shouted before I felt my mind drift off.

When I woke up, I heard the continuous beating of my heart on a monitor, beeping and beeping and beeping before I felt the drug finally wear off.

"What… did you use?" I asked, as my body and the internal system were much stronger than any normal mortal, so the doctor must've used something for horses.

"I figured yours and Nuala's systems were the same, so I used the same drug. It was enough to ten elephants asleep… and it seems it did the job. Also, your body was a bit hard to operate on since it kept trying to fight me while you were asleep,"

"Is that why I'm locked to the bed?" I chuckled as I used some force to tear my limbs out of the metal shackles restraining me to the hospital bed.

"Y-Yes… I apologize for using such a crude thing, but I felt it was necessary for how severe your internal injuries are,"

"I understand. And how are my injuries? Completely healed?"

"Yes, they are completely healed. In fact, I didn't even have to use my healing powers as once I fixed up a few things, your body did the healing by itself. I literally saw your lungs begin to grow back… it was impressive, I must say. In all my years of being a healer, I have never witnessed something so impressive,"

"Thank you for the flattery, but I must get back to work," I said, beginning to stand up, but the nurse suddenly ran over to me from her work desk and lay me back down.

"Please get some more rest. I noticed when I was running tests on you to see if you had any other problems that you have severe mental exhaustion. I know you're a leader of a large organization, but please, try to get some rest,"

"... And if I don't want to? What are you going to do about it?" I asked coldly, with the woman visibly shivering as she lowered her gaze. "Are you trying to order me around?"

"N-No, I was just worried-"

The nurse immediately shriveled up, regretting the thought of thinking we could have an equal conversation because she had saved me.

"*sigh*... I'm just kidding… go get me a glass of water," I lightly chuckled upon laying back down and feeling the soft cushion below me just suck the exhaustion out of my muscles.

"Y-Yes, ma'am," The nurse breathed a sigh of relief while quickly attempting to exit the infirmary before getting blocked by a woman who she quickly let through.

"What's up with her?" Nuala muttered as she walked in, the nurse shuffling out of the room as soon as she passed.

"I just told her to get me some water. Nothing else,"

"Uh huh… Anyway, how are you feeling?" Nuala asked as she sat down right next to me, handing me a ice-cold glass of water.

I chuckled lightly before sitting back up and grabbing her left hand, pulling her arm towards me and pushing her sleeve back.

"It's gotten worse. Are you not taking care of it like I said? If it gets worse, it could fry your entire magic system, and at its worst, it could fry your brain,"

As I looked down at Nuala's left arm, I saw a large lightning scar with purple bruises crawling up from her wrist all the way to her bicep now when just a month ago, it was at the upper parts of her forearm.

"I'm doing fine," She swatted my hand away before pulling her sleeve back down to cover the scar.

I looked at her expression, which seemed to tell me she had already given up, and after what I had just experienced… I felt something click within my mind.

"Nuala, tell me the truth. Don't lie to me, okay?"

"Um? Yes? What is it?"

"Did you really get this from a regular old dungeon… or did you go in that portal and teleport yourself out?"

Nuala's eyes shifted from side to side before her mouth cracked open, and she let out a long, exhausted sigh, all while I took a sip of the glass of water.

"I guess hiding things from you really is impossible… but let me explain myself. I was desperate to get something, anything. Just having the portal, which I know contains titans, isn't enough. I needed more evidence, so I thought I'd go in there by myself. I did go through all the protocols and had several people watch over my moves, but when I went in there… it all happened so quickly,"

"You don't have to tell me everything; just telling the truth is enough for me. I will still love you as a work partner and, most importantly, as a sister," I muttered, hugging her tightly as she limply embraced me with her arms.

"I just thought you would be disappointed in me, and I was worried you would drop me from my job if I didn't have anything to show…"

"Do you really see me like that?" I questioned her, and as a drop of sweat rolled down her cheek, she slightly nodded her head in confirmation. "Then I'm sorry for causing you so much stress."
